Atomic Bose-Fermi Mixtures in an Optical Lattice

Abstract

A mixture of ultracold bosons and fermions placed in an optical lattice constitutes a novel kind of quantum gas, and leads to phenomena, which so far has been discussed neither in atomic physics, nor in condensed matter physics. We discuss the phase diagram at low temperatures, and in the limit of strong atom-atom interactions, and predict the existence of quantum phases that involve pairing of fermions with one or more bosons, or, respectively, bosonic holes. The resulting composite fermions may form, depending on the system parameters, a normal Fermi liquid, a density wave, a superfluid liquid, or an insulator with fermionic domains. We discuss the feasibility for observing such phases in current experiments.

Quantum phases of Bose-Fermi mixtures in optical lattices

H. Fehrmann, M. Baranov, Maciej Lewenstein +1 more

We analyze the ground-state phase diagram of an ultracold Bose-Fermi mixture placed in an optical lattice. The quantum phases involve pairing of fermions and one or several bosons. Depending on the physical parameters these composites can form a Fermi liquid, a density wave, a superfluid or a domain insulator. We determine by means of a mean-field formalism the phase boundaries for finite tunneling, and analyze the experimental feasibility of these sort of phases.

Disordered ultracold atomic gases in optical lattices: A case study of Fermi-Bose mixtures

V. Ahufinger, Laurent Sanchez-Palencia, Adrian Kantian +2 more

We present a review of properties of ultracold atomic Fermi-Bose mixtures in inhomogeneous and random optical lattices. In the strong interacting limit and at very low temperatures, fermions form, together with bosons or bosonic holes, composite fermions. Composite fermions behave as a spinless interacting Fermi gas, and in the presence of local disorder they interact via random couplings and feel effective random local potential. This opens a wide variety of possibilities of realizing various kinds of ultracold quantum disordered systems. In this paper we review these possibilities, discuss the accessible quantum disordered phases, and methods for their detection. The discussed quantum phases include Fermi glasses, quantum spin glasses, ``dirty'' superfluids, disordered metallic phases, and phases involving quantum percolation.

Strongly correlated Fermi–Bose mixtures in disordered optical lattices

Laurent Sanchez-Palencia, V. Ahufinger, Adrian Kantian +3 more

We investigate theoretically the low-temperature physics of a two-component ultracold mixture of bosons and fermions in disordered optical lattices. We focus on the strongly correlated regime. We show that, under specific conditions, composite fermions, made of one fermion plus one bosonic hole, form. The composite picture is used to derive an effective Hamiltonian whose parameters can be controlled via the boson-boson and the boson-fermion interactions, the tunneling terms and the inhomogeneities. We finally investigate the quantum phase diagram of the composite fermions and we show that it corresponds to the formation of Fermi glasses, spin glasses, and quantum percolation regimes.

Engineering superfluidity in Bose-Fermi mixtures of ultracold atoms

Daw-Wei Wang, Mikhail D. Lukin, Eugene Demler

We investigate many-body phase diagrams of atomic boson-fermion mixtures loaded in the two-dimensional optical lattice. Bosons mediate an attractive, finite-range interaction between fermions, leading to fermion pairing phases of different orbital symmetries. Specifically, we show that by properly tuning atomic and lattice parameters it is possible to create superfluids with $s$-, $p$-, and $d$-wave pairing symmetry as well as spin and charge density wave phases. These phases and their stability are analyzed within the mean-field approximation for systems of $^{40}\mathrm{K}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ and $^{40}\mathrm{K}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{23}\mathrm{Na}$ mixtures. For the experimentally accessible regime of parameters, superfluids with unconventional fermion pairing have transition temperature around a percent of the Fermi energy.

Energy spectra of ultracold Bose–Fermi mixtures in optical lattices

Han Jiu-Rong, Yufan Wang, Weiqiang Liu

We show the energy band structure of ultracold atomic Bose-Fermi mixtures in optical lattices: two energy bands for bosonic atoms and a single band for fermionic atoms. The energy band structure can determine the superfluid Mott-insulator phase transition. We find the phase diagram of the mixture by means of path integral, and the phase transition depending on the experimental parameters. The possibility of observing these new phases and their transitions in future experiments is discussed.
