Abstract

The symplectic geometry of the phase space associated with a charged particle is determined by the addition of the Faraday 2-form to the standard d p ∧ d q structure on . In this paper, we describe the corresponding algebra of Weyl-symmetrized functions in operators satisfying nonlinear commutation relations. The multiplication in this algebra generates an associative ∗ product of functions on the phase space. This ∗ product is given by an integral kernel whose phase is the symplectic area of a groupoid-consistent membrane. A symplectic phase space connection with non-trivial curvature is extracted from the magnetic reflections associated with the Stratonovich quantizer. Zero and constant curvature cases are considered as examples. The quantization with both static and time-dependent electromagnetic fields is obtained. The expansion of the ∗ product by the deformation parameter ℏ, written in the covariant form, is compared with the known deformation quantization formulae.

Magnetic quantization over Riemannian manifolds

Mihail Vladimirovich Karasev, T. A. Osborn

We demonstrate that Weyl's pioneering idea (1918) to intertwine metric and magnetic fields into a single joint connection can be naturally realized, on the phase space level, by the gauge-invariant quantization of the cotangent bundle with magnetic symplectic form. Quantization, for systems over a noncompact Riemannian configuration manifold, may be achieved by the introduction of a magneto-metric analog of the Stratonovich quantizer — a family of invertible, selfadjoint operators representing quantum δ functions. Based on the quantizer, we construct a generalized Wigner transform that maps Hilbert–Schmidt operators into L2 phase-space functions. The algebraic properties of the quantizer allow one to extract a family of symplectic reflections, which are then used to (i) derive a simple, explicit, and geometrically invariant formula for the noncommutative product of functions on phase space, and (ii) construct a magneto-metric connection on phase space. The classical limit of this product is given by the usual multiplication of functions (zeroth-order term), the magnetic Poisson bracket (first-order term), and by the magneto-metric connection (second-order term).PACS Nos.: 02.40.-k, 11.10.Nx

From geometric quantization to Moyal quantization

José M. Gracia-Bondía, Joseph C. Várilly

It is shown how the Moyal product of phase-space functions, and the Weyl correspondence between symbols and operator kernels, may be obtained directly using the procedures of geometric quantization, applied to the symplectic groupoid constructed by ‘‘doubling’’ the phase space.

Noncommutative configuration space: classical and quantum mechanical aspects

Franciscus Jozef Vanhecke, Cassio Sigaud, A. R. da Silva

In this work we examine noncommutativity of position coordinates in classical symplectic mechanics and its quantisation. In coordinates {q i , p k } the canonical symplectic two-form is ω 0 = dq i ∧ d p i .It is well known in symplectic mechanics [5, 6,9] that the interaction of a charged particle with a magnetic field can be described in a Hamiltonian formalism without a choice of a potential. This is done by means of a modified symplectic twoform ω = ω 0 -eF, where e is the charge and the (time-independent) magnetic field F is closed: dF = 0.With this symplectic structure, the canonical momentum variables acquire non-vanishing Poisson brackets: {p k , p l } = e F kl (q).Similarly a closed two-form in p-space G may be introduced.Such a dual magnetic field G interacts with the particle's dual charge r.A new modified symplectic two-form ω = ω 0 -eF + rG is then defined. Now, both p-and q-variables will cease to Poisson commute and upon quantisation they become noncommuting operators. In the particular case of a linear phase space R 2N , it makes sense to consider constant F and G fields. It is then possible to define, by a linear transformation, global Darboux coordinates: {ξ i , π k } = δ i k .These can then be quantised in the usual way [ ξ i , π k ] = i δ i k .The case of a quadratic potential is examined with some detail when N equals 2 and 3.

The Landau problem and nonclassicality

Exploring the concept of the extended Galilei group [Formula: see text]. Representations for field theories in a symplectic manifold have been derived in association with the method of the Wigner function. The representation is written in the light-cone of a de Sitter space–time in five dimensions. A Hilbert space is constructed, endowed with a symplectic structure, which is used as a representation space for the Lie algebra of [Formula: see text]. This representation gives rise to the spin-0 Schrödinger (Klein–Gordon-like) equation for the wave functions in phase space, such that the dependent variables have the content of position and linear momentum. This is a particular example of a conformal theory, such that the wave functions are associated with the Wigner function through the Moyal product. We construct the Pauli–Schrödinger (Dirac-like) equation in phase space in its explicitly covariant form. In addition, we analyze the gauge symmetry for spin-1/2 particles in phase space and show how implement the minimal coupling in this case. We applied to the problem of an electron in an external field, and we recovered the nonrelativistic Landau levels. Finally, we study the parameter of negativity associated with the nonclassicality of the system.

Star product for qubit states in phase space and star exponentials

Jasel Berra-Montiel, Alberto Molgado, Mar Sánchez-Córdova

In this paper, we formulate the phase space description of qubit systems using coadjoint orbits of $SU(2)$ and the Stratonovich-Weyl correspondence, yielding a deformation quantization on the sphere. The resulting star product reproduces the operator algebra of complexified quaternions and its antisymmetric part induces the Lie-Poisson structure associated with the Kirillov-Kostant-Souriau symplectic form. We show that quantum dynamics can be expressed entirely in phase space through star exponentials of Hamiltonian symbols, leading to an explicit representation of the propagator. Further, we establish the equivalence between the coherent-state path integral formulation on $S^2$ and the algebraic description in terms of star exponentials. Some examples illustrating the construction of the star-exponential functions and the resulting Poisson structure are included.

q-oscillators, (non-)Kähler manifolds and constrained dynamics

Sergei V. Shabanov

It is shown that q-deformed quantum mechanics (systems with q-deformed Heisenberg commutation relations) can be interpreted as an ordinary quantum mechanics on Kähler manifolds, or as a quantum theory with second (or first)-class constraints. 1. The q-deformed Heisenberg-Weyl algebras [1], [2] exhibiting the quantum group symmetries [3],[4] have attracted much attention of physicists and mathematicians. In particular, some works have been devoted to establishing potentials for ordinary quantum systems which exhibit a q-deformed energy spectrum (see, for example, [5] and references therein) in order to obtain classical dynamical systems associated with the q-deformed Heisenberg-Weyl algebras. In the present paper, we analyze the correspondence limit, when ¯h → 0 (rather than q → 1), of multimode q-deformed Heisenberg-Weyl algebras [1], [2] regardless of the specific form of a Hamiltonian. We show that classical systems associated with the q-deformed Heisenberg-Weyl algebras in this way possess a non-trivial symplectic structure which, in turn, is related to the Kähler symplectic structure [6]. From the other hand, a natural (physical) reason for a dynamical system to have a nontrivial symplectic structure is the existence of ”frozen ” , non-dynamical degrees of freedom or, in other words, constraints [7]. Dirac pointed out that a nontrivial symplectic structure might naturally occur in dynamical systems through second-class constraints [7]. We shall demonstrate below how constrained dynamics can be associated with the q-deformed Heisenberg-Weyl algebra. As was shown in [8], a non-commutative phase space does not necessarily emerges in the formal classical limit of q-deformed quantum mechanics, provided the deformation parameter q is a function of the Planck constant. In the latter case, q-deformed Heisenberg-Weyl algebras yield quadratic symplectic structures on a commutative phase space. For example, the one-mode q-deformed Heisenberg-Weyl algebra defined by the commutation relation ˆ b ˆ b − q
