Abstract

In this work we examine noncommutativity of position coordinates in classical symplectic mechanics and its quantisation. In coordinates {q i , p k } the canonical symplectic two-form is ω 0 = dq i ∧ d p i .It is well known in symplectic mechanics [5, 6,9] that the interaction of a charged particle with a magnetic field can be described in a Hamiltonian formalism without a choice of a potential. This is done by means of a modified symplectic twoform ω = ω 0 -eF, where e is the charge and the (time-independent) magnetic field F is closed: dF = 0.With this symplectic structure, the canonical momentum variables acquire non-vanishing Poisson brackets: {p k , p l } = e F kl (q).Similarly a closed two-form in p-space G may be introduced.Such a dual magnetic field G interacts with the particle's dual charge r.A new modified symplectic two-form ω = ω 0 -eF + rG is then defined. Now, both p-and q-variables will cease to Poisson commute and upon quantisation they become noncommuting operators. In the particular case of a linear phase space R 2N , it makes sense to consider constant F and G fields. It is then possible to define, by a linear transformation, global Darboux coordinates: {ξ i , π k } = δ i k .These can then be quantised in the usual way [ ξ i , π k ] = i δ i k .The case of a quadratic potential is examined with some detail when N equals 2 and 3.

Noncommutative classical and quantum mechanics for quadratic Lagrangians (Hamiltonians)

Branko G Dragovich, Zoran Rakić

Classical and quantum mechanics based on an extended Heisenberg algebra with additional canonical commutation relations for position and momentum coordinates are considered. In this approach additional noncommutativity is removed from the algebra by a linear transformation of coordinates and transferred to the Hamiltonian (Lagrangian). This linear transformation does not change the quadratic form of the Hamiltonian (Lagrangian), and Feynman’s path integral preserves its exact expression for quadratic models. The compact general formalism presented here can be easily illustrated in any particular quadratic case. As an important result of phenomenological interest, we give the path integral for a charged particle in the noncommutative plane with a perpendicular magnetic field. We also present an effective Planck constant ħ eff which depends on additional noncommutativity.

Some Aspects of Noncommutativity on Real, p-Adic and Adelic Spaces

Branko G Dragovich, Zoran Rakić

Classical and quantum mechanics for an extended Heisenberg algebra with canonical commutation relations for position and momentum coordinates are considered. In this approach additional noncommutativity is removed from the algebra by linear transformation of phase space coordinates and transmitted to the Hamiltonian (Lagrangian). This transformation does not change the quadratic form of Hamiltonian (Lagrangian) and Feynman's path integral maintains its well-known exact expression for quadratic systems. The compact matrix formalism is presented and can be easily employed in particular cases. Some p-adic and adelic aspects of noncommutativity are also considered.

Noncommutativity in Configuration Space Induced by a Conjugate Magnetic Field in Phase Space

Jan Govaerts A

An external magnetic field in configuration space coupled to quantum dynamics induces noncommutativity in its velocity momentum space. By phase space duality, an external vector potential in the conjugate momentum sector of the system induces noncommutativity in its configuration space. Such a rationale for noncommutativity is explored herein for an arbitrary configuration space of Euclidean geometry. Ordinary quantum mechanics with a commutative configuration space is revisited first. Through the introduction of an arbitrary positive definite ∗-product, a one-to-one correspondence between the Hilbert space of abstract quantum states and that of the enveloping algebra of the position quantum operators is identified. A parallel discussion is then presented when configuration space is noncommutative, and thoroughly analysed when the conjugate magnetic field is momentum independent and nondegenerate. Once again the space of quantum states may be identified with the enveloping algebra of the noncommutative position quantum operators. Furthermore, when the positive definite ∗-product is adapted to the conjugate magnetic field, the coordinate operators span a Fock algebra of which the coherent states are the analogues of the structureless points in a commutative configuration space. These results generalise and justify a posteriori within ordinary canonical quantisation the heuristic approach to quantum mechanics in the noncommutative Euclidean plane as constructed and developed by F. G. Scholtz and his collaborators.

From Noncommutative Phase Space to Hilbert Space

B. Muthukumar, Aalok Misra

In the Hamiltonian formulation, classical mechanics employs the commutative algebra of functions that are defined on phase space a point of which could be represented using Dirac delta distributions. In the absence of such a concrete existence of the notion of point in the quantum domain, we show how the quantum mechanical formalism emerges by replacing the commutative algebra by a noncommutative algebra of functions and introducing the quantum condition. The noncommutativity is achieved by deforming the product of two functions and by introducing the Moyal brackets, the basic Moyal brackets between two spatial coordinates and between position and momentum coordinates being noncommutative. The only other input we make use of is the quantum condition which is motivated from its classical analogue—the square of Dirac delta distributions.

PATH INTEGRAL APPROACH TO NONCOMMUTATIVE QUANTUM MECHANICS

Branko G Dragovich, Zoran Rakić

We consider Feynman's path integral approach to quantum mechanics with a noncommutativity in position and momentum sectors of the phase space. We show that a quantum-mechanical system with this kind of noncommutativity is equivalent to the another one with usual commutative coordinates and momenta. We found connection between quadratic classical Hamiltonians, as well as Lagrangians, in their commutative and noncommutative regimes. The general procedure to compute Feynman's path integral on this noncommutative phase space with quadratic Lagrangians (Hamiltonians) is presented. Using this approach, a particle in a constant field, ordinary and inverted harmonic oscillators are elaborated in detail.

LAGRANGIAN ASPECTS OF QUANTUM DYNAMICS ON A NONCOMMUTATIVE SPACE

Branko G Dragovich, Zoran Rakić

In order to evaluate the Feynman path integral in noncommutative quantum mechanics, we consider properties of a Lagrangian related to a quadratic Hamiltonian with noncommutative spatial coordinates. A quantum-mechanical system with noncommutative coordinates is equivalent to another one with commutative coordinates. We found connection between quadratic classical Lagrangians of these two systems. We also shown that there is a subclass of quadratic Lagrangians, which includes harmonic oscillator and particle in a constant field, whose connection between ordinary and noncommutative regimes can be expressed as a linear change of position in terms of a new position and velocity.
