Abstract

In this paper we present a double-slit experiment where two indistinguishable photons produced by type-I parametric down-conversion are each sent to a well-defined slit. Data about the diffraction and interference patterns for coincidences are presented and discussed. An analysis of these data allows a test of standard quantum mechanics against the de Broglie--Bohm theory.

We report on a double slit experiment where indistinguishable correlated photons generated through spontaneous parametric down-conversion, are each sent to a well-defined slit. An analysis of the results allows a test of de Broglie-Bohm mechanics against standard quantum mechanics.

Experimental realization of a first test of de Broglie Bohm theory

G. Brida, E. Cagliero, Giuseppe Falzetta +3 more

Quantum mechanics is a pillar of modern physics, confirmed by a huge number of experiments. Nevertheless, it presents many unintuitive properties, strongly differing from classical mechanics due to its intrinsic non-epistemic probabilistic nature. Many attempts have been devoted to building a deterministic theory reproducing all the results of standard quantum mechanics (SQM). One of the most successful attempts, in this sense, is de Broglie–Bohm (dBB) theory. This theory is built in order to reproduce almost all SQM predictions. However, it has recently been suggested that different coincidence patterns are predicted by SQM and dBB when a double-slit experiment is realized under specific conditions. In this paper we present the first realization of such a double-slit experiment with correlated photons produced in type I parametric down-conversion. We observe a perfect agreement with SQM prediction, whilst our result is almost eight standard deviations from the dBB prediction.

Comment on “Biphoton double-slit experiment”

Xavier Oriols

In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. A 68, 033803 (2003)] experimental results on a double-slit configuration with two entangled bosons are presented. The authors argue that their data contradicts the de Broglie--Bohm interpretation of quantum mechanics. In this Comment we show that this conclusion is incorrect.

Observation of two-photon virtual interference and diffraction

Observations of unusual diffraction and interference by two-photon correlation measurements are reported. The signal and idler beams produced by spontaneous parametric down conversion are sent in different directions, and detected by two distant point-like photon counting detectors. A double-slit or a single-slit is inserted into the signal beam. Interference- diffraction patterns are observed in coincidences by scanning the detector in the idler beam.

Quantum diffraction and interference of biphotons generated by parametric down conversion

Ryōsuke Shimizu, Keiichi Edamatsu, T. Itoh

Summary form only given. We demonstrate a proof-of-principle experiment of quantum lithography utilizing parametric down-converted photons and a transmission grating, and show that the diffraction of a multiphoton state can be also explained by the concept of the photonic de Broglie wave. Pairs of frequency-degenerate photons were collinearly generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in a 5 mm long KNbO/sub 3/ (KN) crystal pumped by the second harmonic light of a single longitudinal mode Ti:sapphire laser operating at 861.5 nm. The photon pairs were diffracted by a transmission grating (slit width: 125 /spl mu/m, period: 250 /spl mu/m), placed just after the KN crystal. In this geometry, each photon pair passes together through one of the grating slits. By rotating a mirror, we recorded spatial diffraction-interference patterns at a two-photon detector consisting of two avalanche photodiodes. For comparison, we also observed diffraction-interference patterns of chaotic light from a tungsten lamp using the same apparatus.
