Buffer-gas-induced absorption resonances in Rb vapor

Abstract

We observe transformation of the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance into an absorption resonance in a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ interaction configuration in a cell filled with $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ and a buffer gas. This transformation occurs as one-photon detuning of the coupling fields is varied from the atomic transition. No such absorption resonance is found in the absence of a buffer gas. The width of the absorption resonance is several times smaller than the width of the EIT resonance, and the changes of absorption near these resonances are about the same. Similar absorption resonances are detected in the Hanle configuration in a buffered cell.

Absorption resonance and large negative delay in rubidium vapor with a buffer gas

Eugeniy E. Mikhailov, Vladimir A. Sautenkov, Yuri V. Rostovtsev +1 more

We observe a narrow, isolated, two-photon absorption resonance in 87Rb for large one-photon detuning in the presence of a buffer gas. In the absence of a buffer gas, a standard Λ configuration of two laser frequencies gives rise to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) for all values of one-photon detuning throughout the inhomogeneously (Doppler) broadened line. However, when a buffer gas is added and the one-photon detuning is comparable to or greater than the Doppler width, an absorption resonance appears instead of the usual EIT resonance. We also observe a large negative group delay (≈−300 μs for a Gaussian pulse that propagates through the media with respect to a reference pulse not affected by the media), corresponding to a superluminal group velocity vg=−c/(3.6×106)=−84 m/s.

High contrast electromagnetically induced transparency in a nitrogen filled Rb vapour cell

Md. Mabud Hossain, S. Mitra, Biswajit Ray +1 more

We observe the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) spectra inside a nitrogen filled Rb vapour cell (Rb-N 2 ) in a five-level Λ-type system of D 2 transition of Rb atom. The high contrast EIT resonance in buffer gas filled Rb cell is obtained under our experimental conditions. The effect of velocity changing coherence preserving collisions to obtain the contrast resonance in buffer gas cell has been discussed. We measured the dependence of EIT width and height on pump intensity and find that the EIT width (FWHM) and peak height have a linear dependence on pump intensity. Our experimental results show that the presence of N2 buffer gas reduces the power broadening of the observed resonances.

Absorption resonances in 'Lambda'-type three-level system in cesium vapor cell with buffer gas

Jie Ma, Yanting Zhao, Lirong Wang +3 more

We report experimentally the transformation from the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance to a dispersion-like signal and eventually to a nearly symmetric absorption resonance as coupling detuning increases in 'Lambda'-type three-level system in the cesium vapor cell with buffer gas at room temperature. The observed absorption resonance occupies some remarkable properties of the strong amplitude and the narrow linewidth in comparison with the case without buffer gas. The relation between linewidth of the enhanced absorption resonance and buffer gas pressure is studied. With pressure increasing, linewidth of the absorption resonance becomes narrow. The sub-natural linewidth is observed in Doppler-broadened cesium vapor cell in our experiment. The experimental results are in qualitative agreement with the numerical simulations.

Transformation of electromagnetically induced transparency into enhanced absorption with a standing-wave coupling field in an Rb vapor cell

In‐Ho Bae, Han Seb Moon, Min-Koeung Kim +2 more

We present the transformation of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) into narrow enhanced absorption with an on-resonant standing-wave coupling field in the 5S(1/2)-5P(1/2) transition of the Lambda-type system of (87)Rb atoms. When a coupling laser field was changed from a travelling-wave to a standing-wave that was made by adding a counter-propagating L(C) laser, the transmittance spectrum of the L(P) laser transformed the typical EIT into dramatically enhanced absorption, and a Bragg reflection signal was generated by the periodic modulation of atomic absorption. The reflected probe laser corresponding to a Bragg reflection was measured to be approximately 11.5% of the power of the incident probe laser. We analyzed the enhanced absorption signal and Bragg reflection spectrum as a function of the power and frequency detuning of the coupling laser.

Electromagnetically induced transparency of 87 Rb in a buffer gas cell with magnetic field

Hong Cheng, Han-Mu Wang, Shanshan Zhang +3 more

Abstract We have studied the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) of 87 Rb vapor at room temperature in a magnetic field with an arbitrary angle to the laser propagation direction. Rather than exposing atoms to a parallelled or transverse magnetic field as usual, in our work, we apply a magnetic field (up to 45 Gauss) with an arbitrary angle to the laser propagation direction and the spectra become much more complex. More EIT dips are observed due to the Zeeman splitting on the D 2 line of 87 Rb in a Λ -type configuration. With a 5 Torr N 2 buffer gas in the thermal 2 cm vapor cell, the state 5 2 P 3 / 2 has a very short effective lifetime, corresponding to a large energy broadening, which removes the velocity selective optical pumping effect almost completely and keeps the high resolution EIT spectrum for the energy splitting of 87 Rb in magnetic fields. The shifting of the EIT resonances with the strength of the applied magnetic field coincides well with the theory based on a full matrix Hamiltonian combined with a spectral decomposition method. Our work can be extended to measure the magnetic field vector in space. The effects of the detuning of the probe and coupling beams on the spectral lines are also investigated.

Experimental observation of the linewidth narrowing of electromagnetically induced transparency resonance

Bo Wang, Shujing Li, Jingqin Yao +4 more

We report an experimental observation of the variation in linewidth of the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance in a three-level ?-type system for several laser bandwidths in a Rb vapor cell, with and without a buffer gas. It is found, using narrow bandwidth (about 20 kHz) diode laser for both coupling and probe beams, that the linewidth of the EIT resonance can be significantly narrowed in the Rb vapor cell with the buffer gas. The results are in good qualitative agreement with a simple theoretical calculation.
