Exact quantum jump approach to open systems in bosonic and spin baths

Abstract

A general method is developed which enables the exact treatment of the non-Markovian quantum dynamics of open systems through a Monte Carlo simulation technique. The method is based on a stochastic formulation of the von Neumann equation of the composite system and employs a pair of product states following a Markovian random jump process. The performance of the method is illustrated by means of stochastic simulations of the dynamics of open systems interacting with a Bosonic reservoir at zero temperature and with a spin bath in the strong coupling regime.

Stochastic analysis and simulation of spin star systems

Heinz‐Peter Breuer, Francesco Petruccione

We discuss two methods of an exact stochastic representation of the non-Markovian quantum dynamics of open systems. The first method employs a pair of stochastic product vectors in the total system's state space, while the second method uses a pair of state vectors in the open system's state space and a random operator acting on the state space of the environment. Both techniques lead to an exact solution of the von Neumann equation for the density matrix of the total system. Employing a spin star model describing a central spin coupled to the bath of surrounding spins, we perform Monte Carlo simulations for both variants of the stochastic dynamics. In addition, we derive an analytical expression for the expectation values of the stochastic dynamics to obtain the exact solution for the density matrix of the central spin.

Non-Markovian quantum state diffusion for spin environments

Valentin Link, Kimmo Luoma, Walter T. Strunz

Abstract We introduce an exact open system method to describe the dynamics of quantum systems that are strongly coupled to specific types of environments comprising of spins, such as central spin systems. Our theory is similar to the established non-Markovian quantum state diffusion theory, but for a spin bath instead of a Gaussian bath. The method allows us to represent the time-evolved reduced state of the system as an ensemble average of stochastically evolving pure states. We present a comprehensive theory for arbitrary linear spin environments at both zero and finite temperatures. Furthermore, we introduce a hierarchical expansion method that enables the numerical computation of the time evolution of the stochastic pure states, facilitating a numerical solution of the open system problem in relevant strong coupling regimes.

Open system dynamics with non-Markovian quantum jumps

We discuss in detail how non-Markovian open system dynamics can be described in terms of quantum jumps [J. Piilo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 180402 (2008)]. Our results demonstrate that it is possible to have a jump description contained in the physical Hilbert space of the reduced system. The developed non-Markovian quantum jump approach is a generalization of the Markovian Monte Carlo wave function (MCWF) method into the non-Markovian regime. The method conserves both the probabilities in the density matrix and the norms of the state vectors exactly and sheds new light on non-Markovian dynamics. The dynamics of the pure state ensemble illustrates how local-in-time master equation can describe memory effects and how the current state of the system carries information on its earlier state. Our approach solves the problem of negative jump probabilities of the Markovian MCWF method in the non-Markovian regime by defining the corresponding jump process with positive probability. The results demonstrate that in the theoretical description of non-Markovian open systems, there occurs quantum jumps which recreate seemingly lost superpositions due to the memory.

Stochastic simulation of dissipation and non-Markovian effects in open quantum systems

Denis Lacroix A

The exact dynamics of a system coupled to an environment can be described by an integro-differential stochastic equation for the reduced density. The influence of the environment is incorporated through a mean field which is both stochastic and nonlocal in time and where the standard two-time correlation functions of the environment appear naturally. Since no approximation is made, the presented theory incorporates exactly dissipative and non-Markovian effects. Applications to the spin-boson model coupled to a heat bath with various coupling regimes and temperature show that the presented stochastic theory can be a valuable tool to simulate exactly the dynamics of open quantum systems. Links with the stochastic Schrödinger equation method and possible extensions to "imaginary time" propagation are discussed.

Stochastic dynamics of quantum jumps

Heinz‐Peter Breuer, Francesco Petruccione

The dynamics of an open quantum system coupled to an external reservoir is studied on the basis of a recently proposed formulation of quantum statistical ensembles in terms of probability distributions on projective Hilbert space. The previous result is generalized to include interaction Hamiltonians of the form ${\mathit{tsum}}_{\mathit{i}}$${\mathit{A}}_{\mathit{i}}$\ensuremath{\bigotimes}${\mathit{B}}_{\mathit{i}}$, where ${\mathit{A}}_{\mathit{i}}$ and ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathit{i}}$ are operators acting on the Hilbert space of the reduced system and of the reservoir, respectively. The differential Chapman-Kolmogorov equation governing the dynamics of the conditional transition probability of the reduced system is derived from the underlying microscopic theory based on the Schr\"odinger equation for the total system. The stochastic process turns out to be a piecewise deterministic Markovian jump process in the projective Hilbert space of the reduced system. The sample paths are derived and shown to be similar to those of the Monte Carlo wave function simulation methods proposed in the literature. Finally, a diffusion-noise expansion of the Liouville master equation is performed and demonstrated to yield a stochastic differential equation for the state vector of the open system.

Monte Carlo simulations of non-Markovian open systems

Jyrki Piilo, Sabrina Maniscalco, Kalle‐Antti Suominen

Various Monte Carlo methods allow the simulation of the dynamics of open quantum systems. We highlight the central features a commonly used method for Markovian systems, i.e., Monte Carlo Wave Function method and another one used for non-Markovian systems, i.e., the doubled Hilbert space method. One of the open problems in the field has been the lack of the existence of Monte Carlo method with quantum jumps for non-Markovian systems. We characterize the key problems that should be solved in this context and give indications for the way towards the development of quantum jump method without auxiliary states for non-Markovian systems.
