Nonperturbative Coherent Population Trapping: An Analytic Model

Abstract

Coherent population trapping is shown to occur in a driven symmetric double-well potential in the strong-field regime. The system parameters have been chosen to reproduce the 0(-) <--> 3(+) transition of the inversion mode of the ammonia molecule. For a molecule initially prepared in its lower doublet we find that, under certain circumstances, the 3(+) level remains unpopulated, and this occurs in spite of the fact that the laser field is resonant with the 0(-) <--> 3(+) transition and intense enough so as to strongly mix the 0(+) and 0(-) ground states. This counterintuitive result constitutes a coherent population trapping phenomenon of nonperturbative origin which cannot be accounted for with the usual models.

Coherent population trapping in a specific model

Coherent population trapping is shown to occur in a driven symmetric double-well potential. In the model of the ammonia molecule, for a molecule initially prepared in its lower doublet, under certain circumstances, the upper level remains unpopulated, this occurs in spite of the fact that the laser field is resonant with the |2〉→|3〉 trasition. This is a coherent population trapping phenomenon which cannot be accounted for with the convential models.

Perturbative evolution of far-off-resonance driven two-level systems: coherent population trapping, localization and harmonic generation

V Delgado, J M Gomez Llorente

The time evolution of driven two-level systems in the far-off-resonance regime is studied analytically. We obtain a general first-order perturbative expression for the time-dependent density operator which is applicable regardless of the coupling strength value. In the strong-field regime, our perturbative expansion remains valid even when the far-off-resonance condition is not fulfilled. We find that, in the absence of dissipation, driven two-level systems exhibit coherent population trapping in a certain region of parameter space, a property which, in the particular case of a symmetric double-well potential, implies the well known localization of the system in one of the two wells. Finally, we show how the high-order harmonic generation that this kind of system displays can be obtained as a straightforward application of our formulation.

Coherent population trapping under bichromatic fields

Razmik G. Unanyan, S. Guérin, Hans Rudolf Jauslin

We explore extended $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ systems driven by two resonant laser fields in a strong regime characterized by the fact that the Rabi frequencies are much bigger than the difference between the two field frequencies. We show that a specific coherent superposition of the lower states is trapped during the dynamics. This extended trapped state is different from the trapped state usually encountered in the rotating-wave-approximation regime. We show the robustness of this trapping in the sense that it is stable with respect to significant deviations of the field parameters (frequencies and amplitudes).

Population trapping in the Jaynes-Cummings model via phase coupling

J. I. Cirac, Luis Lorenzo Sánchez-Soto

An expression for the population inversion in the Jaynes-Cummings model and the most general initial state of the atom-field system is presented. States that maintain the same level of population inversion when the atom and the field are initially decoupled are found. When the atom is prepared in a coherent superposition of its states and the field is in an eigenstate of the Susskind-Glogower phase operator, for a certain choice of the relative phase between the atomic dipole and the field, coherent trapping occurs. The evolution of the squeezing of the field for these states is given, and the dependence on the phase and on the mean photon number of the field is studied.

Addition to the dynamic Stark shift of the coherent population trapping resonance

Gavriil Voloshin, Konstantin Barantsev, Andrey Litvinov

This paper presents a theoretical study of the light-induced shift of the coherent population trapping resonance. An analytical model is proposed that describes the interaction of two radiation components with an atomic system using a $Λ$ scheme and takes into account an additional level of excited state. Both weak and strong coupling regimes with off-resonant transitions are considered. It is shown that, in addition to the conventional dynamic Stark shift, an extra shift arises due to the distortion of the resonance line shape when bichromatic laser radiation interacts with off-resonant atomic transitions. An analytical expression for this additional shift is derived in the weak-coupling limit, and its significant impact on the resonance shape and sensitivity to the intensities of the laser field components is demonstrated. It is found that under strong coupling conditions, the additional shift can deviate substantially from a linear dependence on light intensity, suggesting new opportunities for controlling light shifts in precision atomic devices such as quantum frequency standards.
