Coherent population trapping in a specific model

Abstract

Coherent population trapping is shown to occur in a driven symmetric double-well potential. In the model of the ammonia molecule, for a molecule initially prepared in its lower doublet, under certain circumstances, the upper level remains unpopulated, this occurs in spite of the fact that the laser field is resonant with the |2〉→|3〉 trasition. This is a coherent population trapping phenomenon which cannot be accounted for with the convential models.

Nonperturbative Coherent Population Trapping: An Analytic Model

V. Delgado, Jose M. Gomez Llorente

Coherent population trapping is shown to occur in a driven symmetric double-well potential in the strong-field regime. The system parameters have been chosen to reproduce the 0(-) <--> 3(+) transition of the inversion mode of the ammonia molecule. For a molecule initially prepared in its lower doublet we find that, under certain circumstances, the 3(+) level remains unpopulated, and this occurs in spite of the fact that the laser field is resonant with the 0(-) <--> 3(+) transition and intense enough so as to strongly mix the 0(+) and 0(-) ground states. This counterintuitive result constitutes a coherent population trapping phenomenon of nonperturbative origin which cannot be accounted for with the usual models.

Coherent population trapping in the system of a Λ-configuration multilevel atom driven by a two-mode quantized field

Gao‐xiang Li, PENG JIN-SHENG

We have studied the atomic coherent population trapping in the system of a two-mode quantized field interacting with a Λ-configuration multilevel atom with one lower discrete state and two sets of quasicontinuum states, or a set of quasicontinuum states and a set of true continuum states. The influence of the atom's initial preparation and the properties of the atomic upper levels on whether or not atomic coherent population trapping occurs, and the states of the field which trap the atom are analyzed.

Population trapping in the Jaynes-Cummings model via phase coupling

J. I. Cirac, Luis Lorenzo Sánchez-Soto

An expression for the population inversion in the Jaynes-Cummings model and the most general initial state of the atom-field system is presented. States that maintain the same level of population inversion when the atom and the field are initially decoupled are found. When the atom is prepared in a coherent superposition of its states and the field is in an eigenstate of the Susskind-Glogower phase operator, for a certain choice of the relative phase between the atomic dipole and the field, coherent trapping occurs. The evolution of the squeezing of the field for these states is given, and the dependence on the phase and on the mean photon number of the field is studied.

Coherent population trapping under bichromatic fields

Razmik G. Unanyan, S. Guérin, Hans Rudolf Jauslin

We explore extended $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ systems driven by two resonant laser fields in a strong regime characterized by the fact that the Rabi frequencies are much bigger than the difference between the two field frequencies. We show that a specific coherent superposition of the lower states is trapped during the dynamics. This extended trapped state is different from the trapped state usually encountered in the rotating-wave-approximation regime. We show the robustness of this trapping in the sense that it is stable with respect to significant deviations of the field parameters (frequencies and amplitudes).

Phase sensitivity in atom-field interaction via coherent superposition

Khalid Zaheer, Muhammad Suhail Zubairy

Considering a system consisting of a two-level atom, initially prepared in a coherent superposition of upper and lower levels, interacting with a coherent state of the field, we show that the dynamics of the atom as well as the spectrum of the field are sensitive to the relative phase between the atomic dipole and the cavity field. It is shown that, for a certain choice of this phase, ``coherent trapping'' occurs in two-level atoms. In the case of spectra, for the same choice of the phase, instead of a three-peaked symmetric spectrum, we have an asymmetric two-peaked spectrum.

Double coherent population trapping in a laser-driven atomic medium via spontaneous emission generated coherence

Shakir Ullah, Muhammad Kamil Abbasi, Haleema Sadia Qureshi +1 more

Abstract The coherence phenomenon of atomic population trapping in an excited state of a medium is interesting regarding the basic physics of laser-matter interaction and applications to the generation of pulsed lasers. Here, we propose N numbers of five-level atoms as a gain medium in a weak magnetic field with three excited closely-spaced Zeeman-hyperfine energy levels and two lower energy levels. The excited levels are strongly coupled with a lower level via a coherent-field and to the ground energy level via vacuum field modes. The spontaneous emission spectrum, in general, produces four spectral lines associated with the decaying four dressed states of the atom. Based on parallel dipole moments and radiative decay rates, we find the condition of double coherent population trapping (DCPT) originating from the non-decaying states of the excited dressed states. The decay from the states generates coherence among themselves to eliminate two distinct spectral lines from the spectrum using the trapping condition. In each of the two non-decaying dressed states, 23% of the total atom population traps.
