Abstract

We consider the problem of setting up the Wigner distribution for states of a quantum system whose configuration space is a Lie group. The basic properties of Wigner distributions in the familiar Cartesian case are systematically generalized to accommodate new features which arise when the configuration space changes from n-dimensional Euclidean space Rn to a Lie group G. The notion of canonical momentum is carefully analyzed, and the meanings of marginal probability distributions and their recovery from the Wigner distribution are clarified. For the case of compact G an explicit definition of the Wigner distribution is proposed, possessing all the required properties. Geodesic curves in G which help introduce a notion of the midpoint of two group elements play a central role in the construction.

Wigner distributions in quantum mechanics

Elisa Ercolessi, Giuseppe Marmo, G. Morandi +1 more

The Weyl-Wigner description of quantum mechanical operators and states in classical phase-space language is well known for Cartesian systems. We describe a new approach based on ideas of Dirac which leads to the same results but with interesting additional insights. A way to set up Wigner distributions in an interesting non-Cartesian case, when the configuration space is a compact connected Lie group, is outlined. Both these methods are adapted to quantum systems with finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, and the results are contrasted.

Wigner-Weyl isomorphism for Quantum Mechanics on Lie groups

Mukunda, N, Marmo, G, Zampini, A +2 more

The Wigner-Weyl isomorphism for quantum mechanics on a compact simple Lie group $G$ is developed in detail. Several New features are shown to arise which have no counterparts in the familiar Cartesian case. Notable among these is the notion of a `semiquantised phase space', a structure on which the Weyl symbols of operators turn out to be naturally defined and, figuratively speaking, located midway between the classical phase space $T^*G$ and the Hilbert space of square integrable functions on $G$. General expressions for the star product for Weyl symbols are presented and explicitly worked out for the angle-angular momentum case.

Quantum phase-space representation for curved configuration spaces

Clemens Gneiting, Timo Fischer, Klaus Hornberger

We extend the Wigner-Weyl-Moyal phase-space formulation of quantum mechanics to general curved configuration spaces. The underlying phase space is based on the chosen coordinates of the manifold and their canonically conjugate momenta. The resulting Wigner function displays the axioms of a quasiprobability distribution, and any Weyl-ordered operator gets associated with the corresponding phase-space function, even in the absence of continuous symmetries. The corresponding quantum Liouville equation reduces to the classical curved space Liouville equation in the semiclassical limit. We demonstrate the formalism for a point particle moving on two-dimensional manifolds, such as a paraboloid or the surface of a sphere. The latter clarifies the treatment of compact coordinate spaces, as well as the relation of the presented phase-space representation to symmetry groups of the configuration space.

Wigner Functions and Weyl Operators on the Euclidean Motion Group

Marin Drinov Academic Publishing House, Laarni B. Natividad, Job A. Nable

The Wigner distribution function is one of the pillars of the phase space formulation of quantum mechanics. Its original formulation may be cast in terms of the unitary representations of the Weyl–Heisenberg group. Following the construction proposed by Wolf and coworkers in constructing the Wigner functions for general Lie groups using the irreducible unitary representations of the groups, we develop here the Wigner functions and Weyl operators on the Euclidean motion group of rank three. We give complete derivations and proofs of their important properties.

Generalized Phase-Space Distribution Functions

Leon W. Cohen

A set of quasi-probability distribution functions which give the correct quantum mechanical marginal distributions of position and momentum is studied. The phase-space distribution does not have to be bilinear in the state function. The Wigner distribution is a special case. A general relationship between the phase-space distribution functions and the rule of associating classical quantities to quantum mechanical operators is derived. This allows the writing of correspondence rules at will,of which the ones presently known are particular cases. The dynamics and other properties of the generalized phase-space distribution are considered.
