Wigner Functions and Weyl Operators on the Euclidean Motion Group

Abstract

The Wigner distribution function is one of the pillars of the phase space formulation of quantum mechanics. Its original formulation may be cast in terms of the unitary representations of the Weyl–Heisenberg group. Following the construction proposed by Wolf and coworkers in constructing the Wigner functions for general Lie groups using the irreducible unitary representations of the groups, we develop here the Wigner functions and Weyl operators on the Euclidean motion group of rank three. We give complete derivations and proofs of their important properties.

Wigner functions on Euclidean motion group of rank three

Laarni B. Natividad, Job A. Nable

In this paper, we compute the Wigner operator and Wigner function on the Euclidean motion group of rank three. The Wigner quasiprobability distribution is one of the main ingredients in phase space quantum mechanics and has found numerous applications. Generalizations of it in the Lie group setting remains an important problem in physics and mathematics, to which this work makes a contribution.

Symbol Correspondence for Euclidean Systems

Marin Drinov Academic Publishing House, Laarni B. Natividad, Job A. Nable

The three main objects that serve as the foundation of quantum mechanics on phase space are the Weyl transform, the Wigner distribution function, and the $\star$-product of phase space functions. In this article, the $\star$-product of functions on the Euclidean motion group of rank three, $\mathrm{E}(3)$, is constructed. $C^*$-algebra properties of $\star_s$ on $\mathrm{E}(3)$ are presented, establishing a phase space symbol calculus for functions whose parameters are translations and rotations. The key ingredients in the construction are the unitary irreducible representations of the group.

Phase space method for the Euclidean motion group: The fundamental formula

Laarni B. Natividad, Job A. Nable

The objective of this work is to present some aspects of the phase space representation of quantum mechanics on the Euclidean Motion Group of rank three. In particular, the main contribution of this paper is the statement and proof of fundamental formula relating the Weyl transform for the group and the Wigner functions on the group, given by 〈F1|WkF2〉=∫R3∫so(3)k(c,C)WE(3)(F1,F2)dc dC. Here, Wk is the Weyl transform of the function k on E(3) and WE(3) is the Wigner transform. Thus, the various phase space objects such as the Wigner transform and the Weyl transform are also explicitly formulated on the Euclidean Motion Group.

A generalized Wigner function on the space of irreducible representations of the Weyl–Heisenberg group and its transformation properties

Alberto Ibort, Vladimir I. Man’ko, Giuseppe Marmo +2 more

A natural extension of the Wigner function to the space of irreducible unitary representations of the Weyl–Heisenberg group is discussed. The action of the automorphisms group of the Weyl–Heisenberg group onto Wigner functions and their generalizations and onto symplectic tomograms is elucidated. Some examples of physical systems are considered to illustrate some aspects of the characterization of the Wigner functions as solutions of differential equations.

(Heisenberg-)Weyl Algebras, Segal-Bargmann Transform and Representations of Poincaré Groups

Miloslav Havlíček, Jan Kotrbatý, Patrick Moylan +1 more

In a recent paper [1] we described a novel treatment of the unitary irreducible representations of the Poincaré groups in 2, 3 and 4 space-time dimensions as unitary operators on the representation spaces of the Schrödinger representation of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra of index r = 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Here we relate this approach to the usual method of describing the representations of these Poincaré groups, i.e. the Wigner-Mackey construction.

Wigner functions for noncommutative quantum mechanics: A group representation based construction

S. Hasibul Hassan Chowdhury, S. Twareque Ali

This paper is devoted to the construction and analysis of the Wigner functions for noncommutative quantum mechanics, their marginal distributions, and star-products, following a technique developed earlier, viz, using the unitary irreducible representations of the group GNC, which is the three fold central extension of the Abelian group of ℝ4. These representations have been exhaustively studied in earlier papers. The group GNC is identified with the kinematical symmetry group of noncommutative quantum mechanics of a system with two degrees of freedom. The Wigner functions studied here reflect different levels of non-commutativity—both the operators of position and those of momentum not commuting, the position operators not commuting and finally, the case of standard quantum mechanics, obeying the canonical commutation relations only.

The three main objects that serve as the foundation of quantum mechanics on phase space are the Weyl transform, the Wigner distribution function, and the ⋆\star⋆-product of phase space functions. In this article, the ⋆\star⋆-product of functions on the Euclidean motion group of rank three, E(3)\mathrm{E}(3)E(3), is constructed. C∗C^*C∗-algebra properties of ⋆s\star_s⋆s on E(3)\mathrm{E}(3)E(3) are presented, establishing a phase space symbol calculus for functions whose parameters are translations and rotations. The key ingredients in the construction are the unitary irreducible representations of the group.
