Atom spin squeezing in a double lambda system

Abstract

The interaction of classical and quantized electromagnetic fields with an ensemble of atoms in an optical cavity is considered. Four fields drive a double-lambda level scheme in the atoms, consisting of a pair of lambda systems sharing the same set of lower levels. Two of the fields produce maximum coherence, rho12 = -1/2, between the ground state sublevels 1 and 2. This pumping scheme involves equal intensity fields that are resonant with both the one and two-photon transitions of the lambda system. There is no steady-state absorption of these fields, implying that the fields induce a type electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) in the medium. An additional pair of fields interacting with the second lambda system, combined with the EIT fields, leads to squeezing of the atom spin associated with the ground state sublevels. Our method involves a new mechanism for creating steady-state spin squeezing using an optical cavity. As the cooperativity parameter C is increased, the optimal squeezing varies as C^{-1/3}. For experimentally accessible values of C, squeezing as large as 90% can be achieved.

Atomic spin squeezing in a Lambda system

Aurélien Dantan, M. Pinard, Vincent Josse +2 more

Using a quantum theory for an ensemble of three-level atoms (lambda) placed in an optical cavity abd driven by electromagnetic fields, we show that the long-lived spin associated with the ground state sublevels can be squeezed. Two kinds of squeezing are obtained: self-spin squeezing, when the input fields are coherent states and the atomic ensemble exhibit a large non-linearity; squeezing transfer, when one of the incoming fields is squeezed.

Atomic spin squeezing in a Λ system

Using a quantum theory for an ensemble of three-level atoms $(\ensuremath{\Lambda})$ placed in an optical cavity and driven by electromagnetic fields, we show that the long-lived spin associated with the ground-state sublevels can be squeezed. Two kinds of squeezing are obtained: self-spin squeezing, when the input fields are coherent states and the atomic ensemble exhibits a large nonlinearity; squeezing transfer approaching 100%, when one of the incoming fields is squeezed.

Quantum-state transfer between fields and atoms in electromagnetically induced transparency

Aurélien Dantan, M. Pinard

We show that a quasiperfect quantum-state transfer between an atomic ensemble and fields in an optical cavity can be achieved in electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). A squeezed vacuum field state can be mapped onto the long-lived atomic spin associated to the ground-state sublevels of the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type atoms considered. The EIT on-resonance situation show interesting similarities with the Raman off-resonant configuration. We then show how to transfer the atomic squeezing back to the field exiting the cavity, thus realizing a quantum memory--type operation.

Electromagnetically induced squeezing of atomic spin

Xihua Yang, Xuping Shao, Mingfei Cheng

We present a special quantum effect named electromagnetically induced squeezing of atomic spin in the conventional Λ-type atomic system driven by a strong pump field and a relatively weak probe field in an atomic ensemble. Nearly perfect atomic spin squeezing in the y component can be achieved with fully on resonance at high pump-field intensity, large optical depth of the atomic ensemble, and a low coherence decay rate between the two lower levels. This method would greatly facilitate the generation of atomic spin squeezing by using only coherent laser fields, and may find potential applications in realistic quantum metrology, quantum computation, and quantum information processing.

Control of atomic spin squeezing via quantum coherence

Xuping Shao, Yang Ling, Xihua Yang +1 more

We propose a scheme to generate and control atomic spin squeezing via atomic coherence induced by the strong coupling and probe fields in the \ensuremath{\Lambda}-type electromagnetically-induced-transparency configuration in an atomic ensemble. Manipulation of squeezing of the two components in the plane orthogonal to the mean atomic spin direction and generation of nearly perfect squeezing in either component can be achieved by varying the relative intensities of the coupling and probe fields. This method provides a flexible and convenient way to create and control atomic spin squeezing, which may find potential applications in high-precision atomic-physics measurement, quantum coherent control, and quantum information processing.

Quantum treatment of cavity-assisted entanglement of three-level atoms and two fields in an electromagnetically-induced-transparency configuration

Xihua Yang, Nicholas R. Brewer, Paul D. Lett

We examine the field-field and field-atom entanglements generated by \ensuremath{\Lambda}-type three-level atoms placed in an optical cavity driven above threshold by two coherent input optical fields. It is shown that under realistic experimental conditions entanglement between the two output cavity fields as well as between the fields and the atoms can be achieved when the two cavity fields are both one- and two-photon (Raman) resonant with the atomic transitions, as in the configuration for electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The entanglement has similar features to pump-signal-idler three-color entanglement in an above-threshold optical parametric oscillator [Villar et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 140504 (2006)]. This cavity-enhanced atom-field cooperative coupling could enable convenient and efficient generation of bright, nondegenerate, narrow-band entangled fields, which may find potential applications in realistic quantum communications and networking protocols.
