Abstract

We propose a scheme for the quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of a single electron spin in a single quantum dot (QD). Analytical expressions are obtained for the optical Faraday effect between a quantum dot exciton and microcavity field. The feasibility of the QND measurement of a single electron spin is discussed for a GaAs/AlAs microcavity with an InAs QD.

Giant optical Faraday rotation induced by a single-electron spin in a quantum dot: Applications to entangling remote spins via a single photon

C. Y. Hu, A. B. Young, Jeremy L. O’Brien +2 more

We propose a quantum nondemolition method---a giant optical Faraday rotation near the resonant regime to measure a single-electron spin in a quantum dot inside a microcavity where a negatively charged exciton strongly couples to the cavity mode. Left-circularly and right-circularly polarized lights reflected from the cavity obtain different phase shifts due to cavity quantum electrodynamics and the optical spin selection rule. This yields giant and tunable Faraday rotation that can be easily detected experimentally. Based on this spin-detection technique, a deterministic photon-spin entangling gate and a scalable scheme to create remote spin entanglement via a single photon are proposed.

Observation of Faraday rotation from a single quantum-dot spin

Jan Gui‐Hyon Dreiser, Mete Atatüre, A. Badolato +1 more

Here, we present an all-optical dispersive measurement of a single spin confined in a self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dot (QD) (Atature etl., 2007). The time-averaged spin-state is observed via spin-dependent Faraday rotation of a spectrally detuned laser, induced by the polarization-and spin-selective trion transitions. The measurement was performed with a spin prepared by an independent laser (Atature et al., 2006) and in the case of a thermal state.

Intrinsic quantum noise in Faraday-rotation measurements of a single-electron spin

Yanjun Ma, Jeremy Levy

Faraday rotation is one way to realize quantum nondemolition measurement of electron spin in quantum dots. To describe Faraday rotation, semiclassical models are typically used based on quantized electron-spin states and classical electromagnetic fields. Such treatments neglect the entanglement between electronic and photonic degrees of freedom that produce intrinsic quantum noise, limiting the ultimate sensitivity of this technique. We present a fully quantum-mechanical description of Faraday rotation and quantify this intrinsic noise. A method for measuring the purity of a given spin state is suggested based on this analysis.

All-optical nondemolition measurement of single hole spin in a quantum-dot molecule

Filippo Troiani, Ignacio Wilson-Rae, C. Tejedor

The authors propose an all-optical scheme to perform a nondemolition measurement of a single hole spin localized in a quantum-dot molecule. The latter is embedded in a microcavity and driven by two lasers. This allows them to induce Raman transitions which entangle the spin state with the polarization of the emitted photons. They find that the measurement can be completed with high fidelity on a time scale T∼102ps, shorter than the typical decoherence time.

CONTROLLED TELEPORTATION OF ELECTRON SPIN STATE IN QUANTUM DOT VIA SINGLE PHOTON

Yanwei Wang, Mingfeng Wang, Yi-Zhuang Zheng

A controlled quantum teleportation scheme of electron spin state in a quantum dot is proposed. With the entanglement generating through the interaction between the quantum dots in microcavities and a single photon, the controlled teleportation can be implemented using Faraday rotation and single photon measurements. The scheme can be easily generalized to multi-qubit system.

Quantum nondemolition measurement of spin via the paramagnetic Faraday rotation

Yoshiro Takahashi, Keita HONDA, N. Tanaka +3 more

We propose a method for quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of one component of spin by the measurement of polarization rotation of the off-resonant light induced by a paramagnetic Faraday rotation effect. We show that nonclassical states of spins such as the squeezed spin state, the Dicke state, and macroscopic quantum superposed state of spin can be realized corresponding to particular results of QND measurements. Furthermore, it is shown that a nonclassical state of light such as the twin photon state can also be realized with this method.
