Observation of Faraday rotation from a single quantum-dot spin

Abstract

Here, we present an all-optical dispersive measurement of a single spin confined in a self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dot (QD) (Atature etl., 2007). The time-averaged spin-state is observed via spin-dependent Faraday rotation of a spectrally detuned laser, induced by the polarization-and spin-selective trion transitions. The measurement was performed with a spin prepared by an independent laser (Atature et al., 2006) and in the case of a thermal state.

Coherent Optical Control of the Spin of a Single Hole in an InAs/GaAs Quantum Dot

Timothy M. Godden, John H. Quilter, A. J. Ramsay +7 more

We demonstrate coherent optical control of a single hole spin confined to an InAs/GaAs quantum dot. A superposition of hole-spin states is created by fast (10-100 ps) dissociation of a spin-polarized electron-hole pair. Full control of the hole spin is achieved by combining coherent rotations about two axes: Larmor precession of the hole spin about an external Voigt geometry magnetic field, and rotation about the optical axis due to the geometric phase shift induced by a picosecond laser pulse resonant with the hole-trion transition.

Quantum nondemolition measurement of a single electron spin in a quantum dot

Mitsuro Sugita, Machida, Susumu, Y. Yamamoto

We propose a scheme for the quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of a single electron spin in a single quantum dot (QD). Analytical expressions are obtained for the optical Faraday effect between a quantum dot exciton and microcavity field. The feasibility of the QND measurement of a single electron spin is discussed for a GaAs/AlAs microcavity with an InAs QD.

All-Optical Ultrafast Control and Read-Out of a Single Negatively Charged Self-Assembled InAs Quantum Dot

Erik D. Kim, Katherine Smirl, Yanwen Wu +6 more

We demonstrate the all-optical ultrafast manipulation and read-out of optical transitions in a single negatively charged self-assembled InAs quantum dot, an important step towards ultrafast control of the resident spin. Experiments performed at zero magnetic field show the excitation and decay of the trion (negatively charged exciton) as well as Rabi oscillations between the electron and trion states. Application of a DC magnetic field perpendicular to the growth axis of the dot enables observation of a complex quantum beat structure produced by independent precession of the ground state electron and the excited state heavy hole spins.

Coherent Control to Prepare an InAs Quantum Dot for Spin-Photon Entanglement

Leon A. Webster, Katherine Truex, L.-M. Duan +4 more

We optically generated an electronic state in a single InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dot that is a precursor to the deterministic entanglement of the spin of the electron with an emitted photon in the proposal of W. Yao, R.-B. Liu, and L. J. Sham [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 030504 (2005). A superposition state is prepared by optical pumping to a pure state followed by an initial pulse. By modulating the subsequent pulse arrival times and precisely controlling them using interferometric measurement of path length differences, we are able to implement a coherent control technique to selectively drive exactly one of the two components of the superposition to the ground state. This optical transition contingent on spin was driven with the same broadband pulses that created the superposition through the use of a two pulse coherent control sequence. A final pulse affords measurement of the coherence of this "preentangled" state.

Optically controlled single-qubit rotations in self-assembled InAs quantum dots

Clive Emary, Lu Jeu Sham

We present a theory of the optical control of the spin of an electron in an InAs quantum dot. We show how two Raman-detuned laser pulses can be used to obtain arbitrary single-qubit rotations via the excitation of an intermediate trion state. Our theory takes into account a finite in-plane hole g -factor and hole mixing. We show that such rotations can be performed to high fidelities with pulses lasting a few tens of picoseconds.

On-resonant trion Rabi oscillations and spin quantum beats in a singly charged InAs quantum dot

Erik D. Kim, Katherine Smirl, Yanwen Wu +6 more

We demonstrate, to our knowledge, the first coherent transient measurements of a single self-assembled InAs quantum dot charged with a single electron. The measurements show both trion Rabi oscillations and spin quantum beats.
