Kerr noise reduction and squeezing

We introduce a model of squeezing and noise reduction in the Kerr effect that accounts for noise in all quadratures of the driving field. Consequently we show that Kerr squeezing is much more sensitive to driving noise than squeezing produced by second harmonic generation (SHG). We experimentally demonstrate this sensitivity using a nonlinear system that tunes between strong classical SHG and Kerr behaviours. Whilst the system experiences strong squeezing in the SHG limit, it experiences no squeezing in the Kerr limit, although it does experience strong classical noise reduction, or `classical squeezing'.

Quantum‐enhanced interferometer using Kerr squeezing

Nikolay A. Kalinin, Thomas Dirmeier, Arseny A. Sorokin +5 more

One of the prime applications of squeezed light is enhancing the sensitivity of an interferometer below the quantum shot-noise limit, but so far, no such experimental demonstration was reported when using the optical Kerr effect. In prior setups involving Kerr-squeezed light, the role of the interferometer was merely to characterize the noise pattern. The lack of such a demonstration was largely due to the cumbersome tilting of the squeezed ellipse in phase space. Here, we present the first experimental observation of phase-sensitivity enhancement in an interferometer using Kerr squeezing.

Enhancing Interferometer Sensitivity Using Kerr Squeezing in Fibers

Nikolay A. Kalinin, Thomas Dirmeier, Luis Lorenzo Sánchez-Soto +2 more

We present an all-fiber robust setup for polarization squeezing generation using the Kerr effect in fibers. For the first time, a third-order nonlinearity is used to demonstrate interferometer sensitivity enhancement beyond the shot noise limit.
