Initial Decoherence of Open Quantum Systems

Vladimir Privman

We present a new short-time approximation scheme for evaluation of decoher-ence. At low temperatures, the approximation is argued to apply at intermediate times as well. It then provides a tractable approach complementary to Markovian-type approximations, and appropriate for evaluation of deviations from pure states in quantum computing models. KEY WORDS: Decoherence; thermalization; relaxation; open quantum systems.

Dynamical decoupling with initial system-environment correlations

Juju Hu, Qiang Ke, Yinghua Ji

Dynamical decoupling (DD) technique is one of the most successful methods to suppress decoherence in qubit systems. In this paper, we studied a solvable pure dephasing model and investigated how DD sequences and initial correlations affect this system. We gave the analytical expressions of decoherence functions and compared the decoherence suppression effects of DD pulses in Ohmic, sub-Ohmic and super-Ohmic environments. Our results show that (1) The initial system-environment correlation will cause additional decoherence. In order to control the dynamic process of open quantum system more accurately and effectively, the initial correlation between the system and reservoir must be considered. (2) High frequency DD pulses can significantly reduce the amplitude of the decoherence function even in the presence of initial system-environment correlations.

Nonlocal Memory Effects in the Dynamics of Open Quantum Systems

Elsi-Mari Laine, Heinz‐Peter Breuer, Jyrki Piilo +2 more

We explore the possibility to generate nonlocal dynamical maps of an open quantum system through local system-environment interactions. Employing a generic decoherence process induced by a local interaction Hamiltonian, we show that initial correlations in a composite environment can lead to nonlocal open system dynamics which exhibit strong memory effects, although the local dynamics is Markovian. In a model of two entangled photons interacting with two dephasing environments, we find a direct connection between the degree of memory effects and the amount of correlation in the initial environmental state. The results demonstrate that, contrary to conventional wisdom, enlarging an open system can change the dynamics from Markovian to non-Markovian.
