On Ordering of Operators in Canonical Quantization in Curved Space

Abstract

Ambiguities arising in different approaches (canonical, quasiclassical, path integration) to quantization are discussed by an example of the mechanics of a point-like particle in the Riemannian space (the geodesic dynamics). A way to select a single rule of quantization is proposed by requirement of a consistency of the quantum mechanics' following from the canonical and quasiclassical approaches. This rule selects also a definition of the path integration. A geometric interpretation of the noncovariance of the canonical Hamilton operator of a particle with respect to the diffeomorphisms of the Riemannian configuration space is proposed.

Quantum Mechanics in Curved Configurational Space

Эрнест Ахмеджанович Тагиров

Different approaches are compared to formulation of quantum mechanics of a particle on the curved spaces. At first, the canonical, quasi-classical and path integration formalisms are considered for quantization of geodesic motion on the Rimannian configurational spaces. A unique rule of ordering of operators in the canonical formalism and a unique definition of the path integral are established and, thus, a part of ambiguities in the quantum counterpart of geodesic motion is removed. A geometric interpretation is proposed for non-invariance of the quantum mechanics on coordinate transformations. An approach alternative to the quantization of geodesic motion is surveyed, which starts with the quantum theory of a neutral scalar field. Consequences of this alternative approach and the three formalisms of quantization are compared. In particular, the field theoretical approach generates a deformation of the canonical commutation relations between coordinates and momenta of a prticle. A possible cosmological consequence of the deformation is presented in short. Key words: quantum mechanics, Riemannian space, geodesic motion, deformation.

Quantum Mechanics in Riemannian Space-Times. I. The Canonical Approach

Эрнест Ахмеджанович Тагиров

This paper is the first of two papers devoted to formulation of quantum mechanics of a particle in a normal geodesic frame of reference in the general Riemannian space-time. Here canonical quantization of geodesic motion in the 1+3-formalism is considered, the result of which will be compared in the subsequent paper II with that of the field-theoretical approach, see also gr-qc/9807030. The Schrödinger representation of quantum-mechanical kinematics and dynamics is presented in the general-covariant form and a physical interpretation of the state vectors and the position operators is discussed.

Quantum mechanics (QM): Path integrals in phase space

Jean Zinn‐Justin

Abstract In Chapter 2, a path integral representation of the quantum operator e-β H in the case of Hamiltonians H of the separable form p2/2m + V(q) has been constructed. Here, the construction is extended to Hamiltonians that are more general functions of phase space variables. This results in integrals over paths in phase space involving the action expressed in terms of the classical Hamiltonian H(p,q). However, it is shown that, in the general case, the path integral is not completely defined, and this reflects the problem that the classical Hamiltonian does not specify completely the quantum Hamiltonian, due to the problem of ordering quantum operators in products. When the Hamiltonian is a quadratic function of the momentum variables, the integral over momenta is Gaussian and can be performed. In the separable example, the path integral of Chapter 2 is recovered. In the case of the charged particle in a magnetic field a more general form is found, which is ambiguous, since a problem of operator ordering arises, and the ambiguity must be fixed. Hamiltonians that are general quadratic functions provide other important examples, which are analysed thoroughly. Such Hamiltonians appear in the quantization of the motion on Riemannian manifolds. There, the problem of ambiguities is even more severe. The problem is illustrated by the analysis of the quantization of the free motion on the sphere SN−1.

Path integral invariance under point canonical transformations

Andres Jordan, Matias Libedinsky

It is often stated in the literature on path integrals that naive changes of coordinates might in general give inequivalent theories. The discrepancy is presumably connected to subtleties in the discretization, to the stochastic nature of quantum paths, or to operator order ambiguities in the canonical quantization. Here we argue that in order to define a path integral one needs not only a Lagrangian but also a set of paths that join succesive points in the discretized paths. If the set of paths is maintained when performing a point canonical transformation the path integral does not change. We explicitly show this with the calculation of the free particle kernel in polar coordinates.

Quantization of a particle with a force quadratic in the velocity

Catherine Stuckens, Donald H. Kobe

A particle with a nonconservative force quadratic in the velocity is described by an appropriate Lagrangian. The particle can be canonically quantized, but ambiguities concerning the ordering of operators arise. These ambiguities are eliminated if the Feynman path-integral procedure is used to quantize the particle.

Generalized covariance condition and quantization in curved configuration space

Ze-sen Yang, Li Xianhui, Qi Hui +1 more

We expound the generalized covariance condition in quantization. This condition is combined with the other standard conditions to determine the quantum-mechanical operator of a quadratic Hamiltonian ${\mathit{H}}_{2}$, represented by a quadratic function of momenta with a nonsingular coefficient matrix depending on coordinates, and the operator of an arbitrary quadratic quantity ${\mathit{F}}_{2}$ belonging to a system whose Hamiltonian is of the ${\mathit{H}}_{2}$ type. It is shown that the operator of ${\mathit{F}}_{2}$ depends also on ${\mathit{H}}_{2}$ and that H${\mathrm{^}}_{2}$ or F${\mathrm{^}}_{2}$ cannot contain a curvature term. We also present a modified ordering method with certain conditions under which the operator of a quadratic quantity can be found by replacing some linear functions of momenta with their operators. Finally, a path-integration formula is formed and shown to yield the expression of H${\mathrm{^}}_{2}$ that we derive by the canonical quantization method.
