Reply to the comment on `` Manipulating the frequency-entangled states by an acoustic-optical modulator''

Abstract

In the paper [1], authors claim that the scheme for entanglement swapping using an acoustic-optical modulator [2] is flaw. In this reply, we show there is a trivial mistake in the scheme [2], but the main conclusion is still correct, that is, the acoustic-optical modulator can be used to manipulate the frequency-entangled state.

A recent theoretical paper by Shi et al. [Phys. Rev. A 61, 064102 (2000)] proposes a scheme for entanglement swapping utilizing acousto-optic modulators without requiring a Bell-state measurement. In this Comment, we show that the proposal is flawed and no entanglement swapping can occur without measurement.

Expounding an argument that we have stated in Sec. IV of our paper [Phys. Rev. A 54, 1793 (1996)], we demonstrate that according to our understanding Schafir's conclusion [preceding Comment, Phys. Rev. A 56, 4335 (1997)] is based upon a premise that is not tenable.

Our quantum search protocol indicates that entanglement is not required for ͱN speedup. We also reem- phasize the quantum error correction mechanism in our scheme.

Manipulating the frequency-entangled states by an acoustic-optical modulator

Bao‐Sen Shi, Yun-Kun Jiang, Guang‐Can Guo

In this paper, we describe how to realize conditional frequency entanglement swapping and to produce probabilistically a three-photon frequency entangled state from two pairs of frequency entangled states by using an acoustic-optical modulator. Both schemes are very simple and may be implementable in practice.
