Abstract

We propose a reliable scheme for engineering a general cavity-field state. This is different from recently presented strategies, where the cavity is supposed to be initially empty and the field is built up photon by photon through resonant atom-field interactions. Here, a coherent state is previously injected into the cavity. So, the Wigner distribution function of the desired state is constructed from that of the initially coherent state. Such an engineering process is achieved through an adaptation of the recently proposed technique of projection synthesis to cavity QED phenomena.

Strong-Driving-Assisted Probabilistic State Preparation in Cavity QED

Zhen‐Biao Yang

An alternative scheme is proposed for preparing the superpositions of coherent states with controllable weighting factors along a straight line for a cavity field. The scheme is based on the interaction of a single-mode cavity field with a resonant two-level atom driven by a strong classical field. It is in contrast to the previous methods used in cavity QED of injecting a coherent state into a cavity via a microwave source. In the scheme, the interaction between the cavity mode and atoms is fully resonant, thus the required interaction time is greatly shortened. Moreover, the present scheme requires smaller numbers of operations. In view of decoherence, a reduction of interaction time and numbers of operations for the state preparation is very important for experimental implementation of quantum state engineering.

Quantum State Engineering by Superpositions of Coherent States along a Straight Line in Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics

Zheng Shi-Biao

A scheme is proposed for generating the superpositions of several coherent states in a cavity field with dispersive cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED). In the scheme, a sequence of atoms interacts dispersively with the cavity field, connected with a microwave source, and is manipulated by classical fields, followed by state-selective measurements. In this way, the cavity field is collapsed onto a superposition of several coherent states along a straight line with controllable coefficients. This scheme provides the possibility for quantum state engineering via coherent-state superpositions in cavity QED for the first time.

Synthesis of arbitrary quantum states via adiabatic transfer of Zeeman coherence

A scheme for the preparation of general coherent superpositions of photon-number states is proposed. By strongly coupling an atom to a cavity field, atomic ground-state Zeeman coherence can be transferred by (coherent) adiabatic passage to the cavity mode and a general field state can be generated without atomic projection noise.

Continuous Pump Assisted Conditional Synthesis of Nonclassical States in a Dispersive Cavity QED

GUOJian-Hong, Jianhong

The interaction of N identical atoms with both a quantized cavity field and an external classical pumping field with the fields being degenerate in frequency, is studied in the regime where the atoms and fields are highly detuned. This dispersive interaction can be used to generate coherent states for the cavity field. By preparing the injected atoms in a superposition of the bare atomic states, various types of Schroedinger-cat-like states may be generated.

Photon-number-state generation with a single two-level atom in a cavity: a proposal

P. Domokos, M. Brune, J. M. Raimond +2 more

A single two-level atom can be used to prepare an arbitrary photon number state (Fock state) in a high Q cavity . The atom undergoes a controlled succession of interactions with two cavity modes. One of them contains a coherent field. The atom transfers photons one by one from this field to the initially empty second mode. The scheme can be extended to prepare a quantum superposition of the vacuum with a Fock state, a highly non-classical situation. We discuss the feasibility of the experiment with our present Rydberg-atom cavity QED set-up.
