Quantum State Engineering by Superpositions of Coherent States along a Straight Line in Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics

Abstract

A scheme is proposed for generating the superpositions of several coherent states in a cavity field with dispersive cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED). In the scheme, a sequence of atoms interacts dispersively with the cavity field, connected with a microwave source, and is manipulated by classical fields, followed by state-selective measurements. In this way, the cavity field is collapsed onto a superposition of several coherent states along a straight line with controllable coefficients. This scheme provides the possibility for quantum state engineering via coherent-state superpositions in cavity QED for the first time.

Generation of Superpositions of Coherent States Along a Straight Line via Raman Interaction

Zhen‐Biao Yang

We present an alternative scheme for preparing the superpositions of coherent states along a straight line of a cavity field using degenerate atom-cavity field Raman interaction. In the scheme, a collection of Λ-type three-level atoms is orderly sent through the cavity to interact with the cavity field adjusted by a microwave source connected to it, followed by state-selective measurements. In this way, we can prepare the superpositions of several coherent states along a straight line with arbitrary weighting factors for the cavity field. In the scheme, the coherence of the atom-cavity system may be maintained and the second microwave field is unnecessary, which is prior to the previous scheme.

Generation of any superposition of coherent states along a straight line via resonant atom—cavity interaction

Zheng Shi-Biao

This paper proposes a scheme for generating arbitrary superpositions of several coherent states along a straight line for a cavity mode. In the scheme, several atoms are sent through a cavity initially in a strong coherent state. The superposition of several coherent states with desired coefficients may be generated if each atom is detected in the excited state after it exits the cavity. The scheme is based on resonant atom—cavity interaction and no classical field is required during and after the atom—cavity interaction. Thus, the scheme is very simple and the interaction time is very short, which is important in view of decoherence.

Strong-Driving-Assisted Probabilistic State Preparation in Cavity QED

Zhen‐Biao Yang

An alternative scheme is proposed for preparing the superpositions of coherent states with controllable weighting factors along a straight line for a cavity field. The scheme is based on the interaction of a single-mode cavity field with a resonant two-level atom driven by a strong classical field. It is in contrast to the previous methods used in cavity QED of injecting a coherent state into a cavity via a microwave source. In the scheme, the interaction between the cavity mode and atoms is fully resonant, thus the required interaction time is greatly shortened. Moreover, the present scheme requires smaller numbers of operations. In view of decoherence, a reduction of interaction time and numbers of operations for the state preparation is very important for experimental implementation of quantum state engineering.

Measurement-induced generation of Schrödinger cat states in cavity QED

Tong Wang, Peng-Fei Wei, Hai-Jun Xing +1 more

Schrödinger cat states, representing coherent superpositions of macroscopically distinguishable states, are indispensable nonclassical resources for continuous-variable quantum information processing. Existing generation protocols typically rely on strong nonlinear interactions, complicated control techniques, or engineered dissipation, posing challenges for experimental implementation. Here, we propose a simple measurement-based protocol for generating Schrödinger cat states in a cavity-QED system by combining coherent driving, dispersive atom--cavity interactions, and atomic postselection. The atom--cavity interaction establishes coherent correlations between the atomic and photonic degrees of freedom, while the subsequent atomic postselection projects the cavity field onto a non-Gaussian superposition state with pronounced Wigner negativity. Numerical simulations based on the Lindblad master equation show that the generated Schrödinger cat states remain robust against moderate cavity dissipation. Our results demonstrate that conditional atomic measurements provide an effective and experimentally accessible approach for preparing nonclassical cavity states without relying on strong optical nonlinearities or engineered dissipation.

Scheme for efficient generation of mesoscopic field-state superposition in cavity QED

Carla Hermann-Avigliano, Nataly Cisternas, M. Brune +2 more

We present a simple scheme for the fast and efficient generation of quantum superpositions of two coherent fields with different classical amplitudes in a cavity. It relies on the simultaneous interaction of two two-level systems with the field. Their final detection with a high probability in the proper state projects the field onto the desired mesoscopic field state superposition. We show that the scheme is notably more efficient than those using a single atom. We discuss the method in the context of microwave cavity quantum electrodynamics, but it is also highly relevant for the thriving field of circuit QED. It may lead to interesting experimental studies of decoherence at the quantum-classical boundary.

Efficient generation of Bell-cat states in remote cavities

Ying Zhang

In the context of cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED),a potential scheme is proposed to generate entangled coherent states. The scheme includes twice interactions of two-level atoms with cavities. In the first interaction, two atoms are sent into a microwave cavity with the large detuning respectively. And then the second interaction is that the two atoms enter another microwave cavity and are driven by a resonant classical field meantime. When we choose the proper interaction time and make measurement on the two atoms, the two microwave cavity mode fields are determinatively entangled. In addition,it is easy to generalize the scheme to multi-cavity and multi-atom.
