Abstract

We propose and analyze a scheme for generating entangled atomic beams out of a Bose-Einstein condensate using spin-exchanging collisions. In particular, we show how to create both atomic squeezed states and entangled states of pairs of atoms.

Entanglement and spin squeezing of Bose-Einstein-condensed atoms

Mei Zhang, Kristian Helmerson, Li You

We propose a direct, coherent coupling scheme that can create massively entangled states of Bose-Einstein-condensed atoms. Our idea is based on an effective interaction between two atoms from coherent Raman processes through a (two-atom) molecular intermediate state. We compare our scheme with other recent proposals for generation of massive entanglement of Bose-Einstein-condensed atoms. We also present explicit calculations that support the possibility of detecting maximally entangled states without requiring single-atom resolved measurements.

Spin squeezing, entanglement and quantum metrology with Bose-Einstein condensates

Gross, C.

Squeezed states, a special kind of entangled states, are known as a useful resource for quantum metrology. In interferometric sensors they allow to overcome the "classical" projection noise limit stemming from the independent nature of the individual photons or atoms within the interferometer. Motivated by the potential impact on metrology as wells as by fundamental questions in the context of entanglement, a lot of theoretical and experimental effort has been made to study squeezed states. The first squeezed states useful for quantum enhanced metrology have been proposed and generated in quantum optics, where the squeezed variables are the coherences of the light field. In this tutorial we focus on spin squeezing in atomic systems. We give an introduction to its concepts and discuss its generation in Bose-Einstein condensates. We discuss in detail the experimental requirements necessary for the generation and direct detection of coherent spin squeezing. Two exemplary experiments demonstrating adiabatically prepared spin squeezing based on motional degrees of freedom and diabatically realized spin squeezing based on internal hyperfine degrees of freedom are discussed.

Entangled Atomic Beams

A specially prepared Bose-Einstein condensate would produce oppositely directed beams of entangled atoms, which could be used for investigations of entanglement and quantum information theory. In the past only beams of entangled photons have been produced.

Spin squeezing and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen entanglement of two bimodal condensates in state-dependent potentials

Hadrien Kurkjian, Krzysztof Pawłowski, Alice Sinatra +1 more

We propose and analyze a scheme to entangle the collective spin states of two spatially separated bimodal Bose-Einstein condensates. Using a four-mode approximation for the atomic field, we show that elastic collisions in a state-dependent potential simultaneously create spin-squeezing in each condensate and entangle the collective spins of the two condensates. We investigate mostly analytically the nonlocal quantum correlations that arise in this system at short times and show that Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) entanglement is generated between the condensates. At long times we point out macroscopic entangled states and explain their structure. The scheme can be implemented with condensates in state-dependent microwave potentials on an atom chip.
