Inversionless amplification and laser-induced transparency at the discrete transitions and the transitions to continuum

Abstract

The effects of coherence of quantum transitions and the interference of resonant nonlinear optical processes on the spectra of absorption, amplification, and nonlinear-optical generation are considered. The most favorable conditions are discussed for the inversionless amplification, resonant refraction in the absence of absorption and for resonant enhancement of nonlinear-optical generation at the discrete transitions and the transitions to continuum.

Atomic coherence and interference phenomena in resonant nonlinear optical interactions

Alexander K. Popov, Sergei G. Rautian

Interference effects in quantum transitions, giving rise to amplification without inversion, optical transparency and to enhancements in nonlinear optical frequency conversions are considered. Review of the relevant early theoretical and experimental results is given. The role of relaxation processes, spontaneous cascade of polarizations, local field effects, Doppler- broadening, as well as specific features of the interference in the spectral continuum are discussed.

Interference phenomena in Doppler broadened quantum transitions: Amplification of intense radiation without population inversion

A. K. Popov, V. M. Kuchin, S. A. Myslivets

We study the effect of nonlinear interference processes on quantum transitions in intense resonant electromagnetic fields with allowance for changes in level populations, relaxation processes, incoherent excitation, and Doppler broadening of the transitions, on the absorption, amplification, and refraction of the interacting fields. The theory is generalized to the case of nonlinear interference interaction of two intense fields in open and closed three-level quantum systems. Using the density matrix, we derive general expressions in the case of stationary interaction that make it possible to analyze the optical characteristics for various configurations of the interfering transitions by a simple substitution of parameters. The possibility of amplifying light without saturated population inversion in a resonant transition is discussed. We formulate the conditions for such amplification and use examples to show that under appropriate changes in the initial level populations and the intensity of the auxiliary light, the inversionless amplification coefficient does not decrease with increasing intensity of the amplified radiation. We also show that allowance for these accompanying processes greatly affects the choice of optimal conditions for interference in optical transitions. As an illustration we list the results of a numerical analysis of possible experiments.

Interference of two laser induced continuum structures

A. K. Popov, Victor Kimberg

Summary form only given. Atomic coherence and interference of quantum pathways provides the means to manipulate the spectral features of absorption-gain and refractive indexes as well as the nonlinear-optical response of a medium. These open opportunities for lasing without inversion, forming laser-induced transparency, for manipulating by phase matching, and for increase in output of frequency-mixing generation. Theory and first experimental evidence of laser-induced continuum structures (LICS) have been reported. In this paper we develop the theory of LICS on the case of two strong fields coupled to bound-free transitions.

Nonlinear-optical generation of short-wavelength radiation controlled by laser-induced interference structures

A. K. Popov, Victor Kimberg

A study is reported of the combined influence of laser-induced resonances in the energy continuum, of splitting of discrete resonances in the field of several strong radiations, and of absorption of the initial and generated radiations on totally resonant parametric conversion to the short-wavelength range. It is shown that the radiation power can be increased considerably by interference processes involving quantum transitions.

Nonlinear interference effects and all-optical switching in optically dense inhomogeneously broadened media

A. K. Popov, S. A. Myslivets, Thomas F. George

Specific features of nonlinear interference processes at quantum transitions in near- and fully resonant Doppler-broadened optically dense media are studied. The possibility of all-optical switching of the medium to opaque or, alternatively, to absolutely transparent, or even to strongly amplifying states is explored, which is controlled by a small variation of two driving or probe radiations and does not require any change of the level populations. Optimum conditions for inversionless amplification of short-wavelength radiation above the oscillation threshold at the expense of the longer-wavelength control fields are investigated. The feasibility of overcoming the fundamental limitation on a velocity-interval of resonantly coupled molecules imposed by the Doppler effect is shown, based on quantum coherence.

Experimental observation of electromagnetically induced transparency in Nd 3+ :LaF 3 crystal

Coherent interactions of laser fields with resonant atomic and molecular transitions significantly modify optical characteristics of the medium via quantum interference between transition amplitudes. This interference can result in reduction or enhancement of the laser absorption, decrease of the group velocity of the laser pulse etc. The origin of all these processes is electromagnetically induced transparency. This effect is intensively investigated in the connection with its multiple applications: lasing without inversion, group velocity control, quantum optical storage and quantum computing, effective nonlinear interactions of low field intensities, high-precision measurements, spectroscopy and metrology, plasma diagnostics, atomic clock etc.
