Nonlinear interference effects and all-optical switching in optically dense inhomogeneously broadened media

Abstract

Specific features of nonlinear interference processes at quantum transitions in near- and fully resonant Doppler-broadened optically dense media are studied. The possibility of all-optical switching of the medium to opaque or, alternatively, to absolutely transparent, or even to strongly amplifying states is explored, which is controlled by a small variation of two driving or probe radiations and does not require any change of the level populations. Optimum conditions for inversionless amplification of short-wavelength radiation above the oscillation threshold at the expense of the longer-wavelength control fields are investigated. The feasibility of overcoming the fundamental limitation on a velocity-interval of resonantly coupled molecules imposed by the Doppler effect is shown, based on quantum coherence.

Inversionless gain in an optically-dense resonant Doppler-broadened medium

A. K. Popov, S. A. Myslivets, Thomas F. George

Resonant nonlinear-optical interference processes in four-level Doppler-broadened media are studied. Specific features of amplification and optical switching of short-wavelength radiation in a strongly-absorbing resonant gas under coherent quantum control with two longer wavelength radiations, are investigated. The major outcomes are illustrated with virtual experiments aimed at inversionless short-wavelength amplification, which also address deficiencies in this regard in recent experiments. With numerical simulations related to the proposed experiment in optically-dense sodium dimer vapor, we show optimal condition for optical switching and the expected gain of the probe radiation, which is above the oscillation threshold.

Interference phenomena in Doppler broadened quantum transitions: Amplification of intense radiation without population inversion

A. K. Popov, V. M. Kuchin, S. A. Myslivets

We study the effect of nonlinear interference processes on quantum transitions in intense resonant electromagnetic fields with allowance for changes in level populations, relaxation processes, incoherent excitation, and Doppler broadening of the transitions, on the absorption, amplification, and refraction of the interacting fields. The theory is generalized to the case of nonlinear interference interaction of two intense fields in open and closed three-level quantum systems. Using the density matrix, we derive general expressions in the case of stationary interaction that make it possible to analyze the optical characteristics for various configurations of the interfering transitions by a simple substitution of parameters. The possibility of amplifying light without saturated population inversion in a resonant transition is discussed. We formulate the conditions for such amplification and use examples to show that under appropriate changes in the initial level populations and the intensity of the auxiliary light, the inversionless amplification coefficient does not decrease with increasing intensity of the amplified radiation. We also show that allowance for these accompanying processes greatly affects the choice of optimal conditions for interference in optical transitions. As an illustration we list the results of a numerical analysis of possible experiments.

Coherence-controlled transparency and far-from-degenerate parametric gain in a strongly absorbing Doppler-broadened medium

Thomas F. George, A. K. Popov

An inversionless gain of anti-Stokes radiation above the oscillation threshold in an optically dense far-from-degenerate double- ? Doppler-broadened medium accompanied by Stokes gain is predicted. The outcomes are illustrated with numerical simulations applied to sodium dimer vapor. Optical switching from absorption to gain via transparency controlled by a small variation of the medium and of the driving radiation parameters, which are at a level of less than one photon per molecule, is shown.

Coherence-controlled optical switching and amplification without inversion in a strongly-absorbing inhomogeneously-broadened medium

A. K. Popov, S. A. Myslivets, Thomas F. George

A sample, opaque at an inhomogeneously-broadened transition, can be made transparent or even strongly amplifying without inversion by two control lower-frequency lasers. Applications for frequency-tunable filtering, photon switching and amplification in Raman schemes are discussed.

Fully resonant three-wave mixing in isotropic media under induced transparency conditions

Vasily G. Arkhipkin, V. Yu. Apanovich

A theoretical investigation is reported of three-wave frequency mixing under simultaneous single-photon and two-photon resonance conditions when one of the fields being mixed is weak and the other is strong. A study is made of the influence of the field splitting on the nonlinear susceptibility in the case of homogeneously and Doppler-broadened transitions. An analysis is made of the role played by interference between quantum transitions via quasilevels in absorption and generation, and of its influence on mixing. It is shown that significant enhancement of the nonlinear generation efficiency is possible in optically dense media.

Resonant three-wave mixing in isotropic media using induced transparency

Vasily G. Arkhipkin, V. Y. Apanonich

Three-wave frequency mixing is theoretically investigated under simultaneous single- and two-photon resonances; one of the fundamental fields is weak while another one is strong. The influence of field splitting on nonlinear susceptibility is studied for both homogeneously- and Doppler-broadened transitions. We analyzed the role of interference of quantum transitions via quasilevels in absorption and nonlinear generation and its impact on mixing process. The possibility of significant enhancement of nonlinear generation efficiency in optically dense media is demonstrated.
