Bound Entanglement and Continuous Variables

Abstract

We introduce the definition of generic bound entanglement for the case of continuous variables. We provide some examples of bound entangled states for that case, and discuss their physical sense in the context of quantum optics. We raise the question of whether the entanglement of these states is generic. As a by-product we obtain a new many parameter family of bound entangled states with positive partial transpose. We also point out that the "entanglement witnesses" and positive maps revealing the corresponding bound entanglement can easily be constructed.

Preparation of bipartite bound entangled Gaussian states in quantum optics

Shan Ma, Matthew J. Woolley, Xiaojun Jia +1 more

The positivity of the partial transpose is in general only a necessary condition for separability. There exist quantum states that are not separable, but nevertheless are positive under the partial transpose. States of this type are known as bound entangled states, meaning that these states are entangled but they do not allow distillation of pure entanglement by means of local operations and classical communication. We present a parametrization of a class of $2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2$ bound entangled Gaussian states for bipartite continuous-variable quantum systems with two modes on each side. We propose an experimental protocol for preparing a particular bound entangled state in quantum optics. We then discuss the robustness properties of this protocol with respect to the occupation number of thermal inputs and the degrees of squeezing.

Extremal extensions of entanglement witnesses: Finding new bound entangled states

Ritabrata Sengupta, Arvind

In this paper, we discuss extremal extensions of entanglement witnesses based on Choi's map. The constructions are based on a generalization of the Choi map, from which we construct entanglement witnesses. These extremal extensions are powerful in terms of their capacity to detect entanglement of positive under partial transpose (PPT) entangled states and lead to unearthing of entanglement of new PPT states. We also use the Cholesky-like decomposition to construct entangled states which are revealed by these extremal entanglement witnesses.

A general scheme for construction of bound entangled states by convex linear combination

Wei Cheng, Xu Fang

To characterize bound entangled states is one of the most challenging problems in quantum information theory. In this paper, we look from a new different angle to find bound entangled states. In particularly, we give a general scheme for construction of new bound entangled states from known bound entangled states by convex linear combination. This is achieved by quantitatively characterizing entanglement of quantum states via the positive partial transpose (PPT) criterion and the computable cross-norm or realignment (CCNR) criterion. The obtained results are illustrated through an explicit example.

Positive maps for bound entangled states based on unextendible product bases

Barbara M. Terhal

In this note I show how to construct positive maps from any bound entangled state based on an unextendible product basis. These positive maps exhibit the inseparability of the corresponding bound entangled states. I illustrate the construction with an example.

Detection of bound entanglement in continuous-variable systems

Chengjie Zhang, Hyunchul Nha, Yong-Sheng Zhang +1 more

We present several entanglement conditions in order to detect bound entangled states in continuous-variable systems. Specifically, Werner and Wolf [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 3658 (2001)] and Horodecki and Lewenstein [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 2657 (2000)] have proposed examples of a bound entangled Gaussian state and a bound entangled non-Gaussian state, respectively, of which entanglement can be detected by using our entanglement conditions.

Generating and detecting bound entanglement in two-qutrits using a family of indecomposable positive maps

Bihalan Bhattacharya, Suchetana Goswami, Rounak Mundra +4 more

Abstract The problem of bound entanglement detection is a challenging aspect of quantum information theory for higher dimensional systems. Here, we propose an indecomposable positive map for two-qutrit systems, which is shown to detect a class of positive partial transposed (PPT) states. A corresponding witness operator is constructed and shown to be weakly optimal and locally implementable. Further, we perform a structural physical approximation of the indecomposable map to make it a completely positive one, and find a new PPT-entangled state which is not detectable by certain other well-known entanglement detection criteria.
