Coherent responses of the resonance atom layer to short optical pulse excitation

Abstract

Coherent responses of resonance atom layer to short optical pulse excitation are numerically considered. The inhomogeneous broadening of one-photon transition, the local field effect, and the substrate dispersion are involved into analysis. For a certain intensity of incident pulses a strong coherent interaction in the form of sharp spikes of superradiation is observed in transmitted radiation. The Lorentz field correction and the substrate dispersion weaken the effect, providing additional spectral shifts. Specific features of photon echo in the form of multiple responses to a double or triple pulse excitation is discussed.

Superradiance and photon echo effects in the interaction of coherent optical pulses with inhomogeneously broadened systems

Sergey M. Zakharov, Edward A. Manykin

A theoretical analysis is given of the phenomena of superradiance and photon echo in the interaction of coherent light pulses with a resonant medium emitting inhomogeneously broadened lines. A delay of the superradiance signal is predicted. The properties of the response function of a two-level system and of the photon echo are considered.

Theoretical study of photon echoes associated with the coherent nonlinear optical effect in a resonant three-level system

M. Aihara, Humio Inaba

An analytical study of the photon echoes associated with the three-level system interacting resonantly with optical pulses possessing two different frequencies is performed. It is predicted that photon echoes arise at anomalous times corresponding to the correlation between the inhomogeneous broadenings for the different spectral lines as well as at the normal time expected in a simple two-level system. This new effect is caused by the coupling of the two resonant transitions through the common energy level. Furthermore, if the particle does not have inversion symmetry, the echoes with the sum or difference frequency of the exciting optical pulses can be observed in such a system. The quantitative analysis is also given for intensities, direction of propagation and polarizations of the anomalous echoes which depend upon the exciting pulses with different frequency.

Coherent responses of quantum-dot layer to short optical pulse excitation

S. O. Elyutin, Andrei I. Maimistov

It is shown numerically that a thin layer of semiconductor quantum dots has a threshold transmission characteristic for the ultrashort incident pulse. Weak pulses mainly reflect from layer while pulses with amplitudes above the threshold mainly transmit. The coherent interaction of optical pulses with the layer of quantum dots causes the forming of peaks of superradiation on the profile of transmitted pulses. The phenomenon is accompanied by rapid temporal evolution of ellipticity and azimuth angle across the pulse duration.

Simulation of coherent responses of resonant media excited by a series of ultrashort laser pulses

Alexey Tiranov, Каримуллин Камиль Равкатович, В. В. Самарцев

A technique for the numerical simulation of coherent optical responses of the photon echo type formed in resonance media with strong inhomogeneous broadening under the action of femtosecond laser pulses is developed. This approach is based on solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method without application of a fast rotating field and slowly varying envelope approximations. The method can be used to simulate coherent responses in different resonance media with a complex structure of energy levels. The technique was validated using the example of describing experiments on narrowing a photon echo pulse and femtosecond echo processing.

Optical Coherent Transient Effects

Guang S. He

When an intense and short laser pulse or a fast-switching-on/off laser field interacts with a resonant absorbing medium, several optical coherent transient effects can be observed, including the self-induced transparency effect, photon echo effect, optical nutation effect, and the optical free induction decay effect. The study of these effects enables us to gain a deeper understanding of the coherent transient interaction of an intense pulsed or rapidly switched optical field with the resonant medium, and to measure the magnitude of the dipole-moment matrix elements, relaxation parameters, and spectral broadening mechanisms of the investigated materials. On the other hand, these optical coherent transient effects can also be applied for developing special techniques of optical pulse delay, pulse reshaping, and optical pulse manipulation.
