Spectral phase conjugation via extended phase matching

Abstract

It is shown that the copropagating three-wave-mixing parametric process, with appropriate type-II extended phase matching and pumped with a short second-harmonic pulse, can perform spectral phase conjugation and parametric amplification, which shows a threshold behavior analogous to backward-wave oscillation. The process is also analyzed in the Heisenberg picture, which predicts a spontaneous parametric downconversion rate in agreement with the experimental result reported by Kuzucu et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 083601 (2005)]. Applications in optical communications, signal processing, and quantum information processing can be envisaged.

Spontaneous spectral phase conjugation for coincident frequency entanglement

Mankei Tsang, Demetri Psaltis

Spontaneous parametric processes pumped transversely with short pulses are studied under a unified framework, which proves that such processes can efficiently generate entangled photon pairs with time anticorrelation and frequency correlation. Improvements upon previously proposed schemes can be made by the use of quasi-phase-matching, four-wave mixing, and cross-phase-modulation compensation. The use of frequency-correlated photons in the Hung-Ou-Mandel interferometer is studied.

Photon-pair production and frequency translation using backward-wave spontaneous parametric downconversion

Backward-wave three-wave mixing is a difficult χ (2) interaction to observe, because it requires ultrashort poling periods to achieve phasematching. Having realized sub-micrometer periods in periodically poled KTiOPO 4 (PPKTP), we demonstrate for the first time first-order quasi-phasematched, backward-wave spontaneous parametric downconversion (BW SPDC). We pumped the PPKTP crystal at 800 nm and obtained a forward-wave signal at 1400 nm and a backward-wave idler at 1868 nm. We estimated an internal pair production rate of 4.0 × 10 4 pairs/s/mW. The backward-wave phasematching constraints lead to the unique tuning property that spectral features of the pump are transferred to the forward-wave signal photons, which makes BW SPDC an attractive source of spectrally shaped, heralded single photons. These spectrally shaped photons are useful for quantum computing and quantum interconnects. For the first time, we experimentally show this effect by observing frequency translation between a spectrally shaped pump beam and the BW SPDC signal photons. Due to their unique properties, BW-SPDC-based devices will be important building blocks for quantum information processing.

Observing multiple processes of backward-phase-matching spontaneous parametric downconversion in a single-periodic crystal

Mingyuan Gao, Yin‐Hai Li, Zheng Ge +4 more

A nonlinear process based on backward quasi-phase matching (BQPM) can be used to realize mirrorless optical parametric oscillation, the generation of paired photons with a separable joint spectral amplitude and narrow wavelength bandwidth, and the preparation of counterpropagating polarization-entangled photons, which shows distinct advantages over some applications based on forward quasi-phase matching. In this work, three types of BQPM in a bulk periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate crystal with a single period are theoretically analyzed. Experimentally, the harmonic wave generated by second-harmonic generation in type 0 and type I exhibits a narrow bandwidth of 15.5 GHz. Furthermore, photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric downconversion in all types of BQPM (type 0, type I, and type II) at 7th order are observed and characterized. Their coincidence-to-accidental ratios are all greater than 5 × 10 3 in the pump power range from 10 mW to 500 mW. This research lays the foundation for further applications of BQPM in nonlinear optics, quantum optics, and quantum information processing.

Coherent phase-modulation transfer in counterpropagating parametric down-conversion

Gustav Strömqvist, Valdas Pašiškevičius, Carlota Canalias +1 more

Distributed positive feedback established by a counterpropagating three-wave mixing process in a submicrometer structured second-order nonlinear medium leads to mirrorless parametric oscillation with unusual spectral properties. In this work, we demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that the phase modulation of the pump is coherently transferred to the co-propagating parametric wave, while the counterpropagating wave retains a narrow bandwidth and high coherence. The main mechanisms responsible for these properties are the maximized convective separation between the counterpropagating waves and the associated phase-locking between the pump and the co-propagating parametric wave. This suggests that mirrorless optical parametric oscillators can be pumped with incoherent light and still generate highly coherent backward-propagating radiation.

Quantum theory of coupled parametric down-conversion and up-conversion with simultaneous phase matching

Martin E. Smithers, Eugene Y. C. Lu

A two-step nonlinear optical interaction consisting of (i) a spontaneous frequency down-conversion process coupled with (ii) a frequency up-conversion process is treated quantum mechanically in the experimentally observed case of simultaneous collinear phase matching of both processes. The temporal behavior of the output signals is found to depend on which process, (i) or (ii), predominates. The nature of the photon statistics for each of the output modes is found to be "super-Poisson," regardless of which process, (i) or (ii), is dominant, and the zero-point fluctuations characteristic of parametric amplification are exhibited.
