Quantum theory of coupled parametric down-conversion and up-conversion with simultaneous phase matching

Abstract

A two-step nonlinear optical interaction consisting of (i) a spontaneous frequency down-conversion process coupled with (ii) a frequency up-conversion process is treated quantum mechanically in the experimentally observed case of simultaneous collinear phase matching of both processes. The temporal behavior of the output signals is found to depend on which process, (i) or (ii), predominates. The nature of the photon statistics for each of the output modes is found to be "super-Poisson," regardless of which process, (i) or (ii), is dominant, and the zero-point fluctuations characteristic of parametric amplification are exhibited.

Simultaneous phase-sensitive parametric amplification and up-conversion of an optical image

A. S. Chirkin, E. V. Makeev

We develop for the first time a quantum theory of simultaneous amplification and frequency up-conversion of optical images in two coupled three-wave processes. The theory developed takes into account the diffraction effect and the difference of the group velocities of the interacting waves. Due to the degenerate parametric process involved in the nonlinear optical interactions, the up-conversion also possesses phase sensitivity. As a result, the statistical characteristics of the amplified image and the converted one depend on the phase relation between the signal and the pump waves. It is shown that at the output of the nonlinear crystal the signal-to-noise ratios for the amplified image and the converted one may be same as those for the initial image, i.e. transformation of the optical image may be 'noiseless'.

Parametric down and up conversion in the Wigner representation of quantum optics

K. Dechoum, Trevor W. Marshall, Emilio Santos

We study spontaneous parametric processes starting from the quantized field equations in the Heisenberg picture using the common approximation of treating the laser pump as classical. After a (standard) linearization procedure we pass to the Wigner representation and the process becomes formally equivalent to the parametric interaction of two incoming zero-point modes with a pumping laser wave coupled by an optically nonlinear medium. Then the treatment of parametric down conversion and parametric up conversion are described by the Maxwell equations and look like a parametric amplification of the vacuum field. The fourth-order correlation function between the signal and idler fields is obtained in a form that makes for easy comparison with experimental results.

Quantum properties of optical images in coupled nondegenerate parametric processes

M. Yu. Saygin, A. S. Chirkin

Quantum properties of parametric amplification and frequency conversion of an optical image in coupled parametric interactions are analyzed for the case of a remote object. The coupled-wave interaction consists of a traditional process of parametric amplification in the high-frequency pump field accompanied by the frequency mixing of generated and pump waves. The photon number density and signal-to-noise ratio at the interacting frequencies are studied in the image plane at the output of the nonlinear frequency converter in the fixed pump field approximation. The degree of entanglement of optical images at frequencies above and below the pump frequency is investigated.

Simultaneous parametric generation and up-conversion of entangled optical images

M. Yu. Saygin, A. S. Chirkin

A quantum theory of parametric amplification and frequency conversion of an optical image in coupled nonlinear optical processes that include one parametric amplification process at high-frequency pumping and two up-conversion processes in the same pump field is developed. The field momentum operator that takes into account the diffraction and group velocities of the waves is used to derive the quantum equations related to the spatial dynamics of the images during the interaction. An optical scheme for the amplification and conversion of a close image is considered. The mean photon number density and signal-to-noise ratio are calculated in the fixed-pump-field approximation for images at various frequencies. It has been established that the signal-to-noise ratio decreases with increasing interaction length in the amplified image and increases in the images at the generated frequencies, tending to asymptotic values for all interacting waves. The variance of the difference of the numbers of photons is calculated for various pairs of frequencies. The quantum entanglement of the optical images formed in a high-frequency pump field is shown to be converted to higher frequencies during the generation of sum frequencies. Thus, two pairs of entangled optical images are produced in the process considered.

Quantum Fluctuations and Noise in Parametric Processes. I.

W. H. Louisell, Avigail Yariv, Anthony E.. Siegman

A quantum mechanical model for parametric interactions is used to evaluate the effect of the measuring (amplifying) process on the statistical properties of radiation. Parametric amplification is shown to be ideal in the sense that it allows a simultaneous determination of the phase and number of quanta of an electromagnetic wave with an accuracy which is limited only by the uncertainty principle. Frequency conversion via parametric processes is shown to be free of zero-point fluctuations.

Parametric amplification and up-conversion of optical image in coupled nonlinear optical processes

E. V. Makeev, A. S. Chirkin

We develop quantum theory of process of the parametric optical image amplification at high-frequency pumping which is accompanied by up - conversion one. Such interactions can be implemented by two coupled three-frequency optical processes. The theory developed takes into account the diffraction effect and the difference of group velocities of interacting waves. The expressions for mean photon numbers and noise figures of the interacting waves are obtained and the dependence of these parameters on the interaction length are examined.
