Boson mappings and four-particle correlations in algebraic neutron-proton pairing models

Abstract

Neutron-proton pairing correlations are studied within the context of two solvable models, one based on the algebra SO(5) and the other on the algebra SO(8). In both of these models, particles interact in $L=0$ pairs only. Boson-mapping techniques are applied to these models and shown to provide a convenient methodological tool both for solving such problems and for gaining useful insight into general features of pairing. We first focus on the SO(5) model, which involves generalized $T=1$ pairing. Neither boson mean-field methods nor fermion-pair approximations are able to describe in detail neutron-proton pairing in this model. The analysis suggests, however, that the boson Hamiltonian obtained from a mapping of the fermion Hamiltonian contains a pairing force between bosons, pointing to the importance of boson-boson (or equivalently four-fermion) correlations with isospin $T=0$ and spin $S=0$. These correlations are investigated by carrying out a second boson mapping. Closed forms for the fermion wave functions are given in terms of the fermion-pair operators. Similar techniques are applied---albeit in less detail---to the SO(8) model, involving a competition between $T=1$ and $T=0$ pairing. Conclusions similar to those of the SO(5) analysis are reached regarding the importance of four-particle correlations in systems involving neutron-proton pairing.

Generalization of Richardson-Gaudin models to rank-2 algebras

B. Errea, Sergio Lerma-Hernández, J. Dukelsky +4 more

A generalization of Richardson-Gaudin models to the rank-2 SO(5) and SO(3,2) algebras is used to describe systems of two kinds of fermions or bosons interacting through a pairing force. They are applied to the proton-neutron neutron isovector pairing model and to the Interacting Boson Model 2, in the transition from vibration to gamma-soft nuclei, respectively. In both cases, the integrals of motion and their eigenvalues are obtained.

EXACTLY SOLVABLE PROTON–NEUTRON PAIRING HAMILTONIANS AND QUARTET CORRELATIONS

J. Dukelsky, B. Errea, Sergio Lerma-Hernández +3 more

Exactly solvable models have played an important role in helping to elucidate the physics of strongly correlated systems. Recently, we have extended the Richardson-Gaudin (RG) models of SU(2) like particle pairing to higher rank algebras. In particular, we will discuss here the SO(8) RG model of proton-neutron pairing as a model of strong quartet correlations. The failure of proton-neutron BCS suggests that new approaches have to be developed to account for them.

Many-body approximations in the presence of proton-neutron pairing

Stuart Pittel, Jan Dobeš

The applicability of the generalized BCS approximation in the presence of proton-neutron pairing is studied in the context of two algebraic models. The analysis suggests that approximations based solely on pair correlations cannot describe the ground states of these models. Full symmetry restoration or inclusion of four-body -like correlations is required.

Exact Solution of the Spin-Isospin Proton-Neutron Pairing Hamiltonian

Sergio Lerma-Hernández, B. Errea, J. Dukelsky +1 more

The exact solution of the proton-neutron isoscalar-isovector (T=0,1) pairing Hamiltonian with nondegenerate single-particle orbits and equal pairing strengths is presented for the first time. The Hamiltonian is a particular case of a family of integrable SO(8) Richardson-Gaudin models. The exact solution of the T=0,1 pairing Hamiltonian is reduced to a problem of 4 sets of coupled nonlinear equations that determine the spectral parameters of the complete set of eigenstates. The microscopic structure of individual eigenstates is analyzed in terms of evolution of the spectral parameters in the complex plane for a system of A=80 nucleons. The spectroscopic trends of the exact solutions are discussed in terms of generalized rotations in isospace.

Exact Solution of the Isovector Neutron-Proton Pairing Hamiltonian

J. Dukelsky, V. G. Gueorguiev, P. Van Isacker +3 more

The complete exact solution of the T = 1 neutron-proton pairing Hamiltonian is presented in the context of the SO(5) Richardson-Gaudin model with nondegenerate single-particle levels and including isospin symmetry-breaking terms. The power of the method is illustrated with a numerical calculation for for 64Ge for a pf + g9/2 model space which is out of reach of modern shell-model codes.

A method is proposed for determining the ground state of the Hamiltonian $H=\ensuremath{\Sigma}\stackrel{}{k}{\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{k}{N}_{k}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\Sigma}\stackrel{}{\mathrm{ijkl}}{V}_{\mathrm{ijkl}}{a}_{i}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}}{a}_{j}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}}{a}_{k}{a}_{l}$when the residual interaction is such that $〈{a}_{i}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}}{a}_{j}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}}{a}_{k}{a}_{l}〉={〈{N}_{i}{N}_{j}(1\ensuremath{-}{N}_{k})(1\ensuremath{-}{N}_{l})〉}^{\frac{1}{2}}{〈{N}_{k}{N}_{l}(1\ensuremath{-}{N}_{i})(1\ensuremath{-}{N}_{j})〉}^{\frac{1}{2}}$is a good approximation. The method is applied to pairing interactions involving one type of nucleon as well as to the generalized pairing problem containing neutron-neutron, neutron-proton, and proton-proton interactions.
