Abstract

We estimate the ratio ${R=g}_{3}{/g}_{2}$ of the critical coupling constants ${g}_{2}$ and ${g}_{3}$ that are required to achieve binding of two or three bosons, respectively, with a short-range interaction, and examine how this ratio depends on the shape of the potential. Simple monotonous potentials give $R\ensuremath{\simeq}0.8.$ A wide repulsive core pushes this ratio close to $R=1.$ On the other hand, for an attractive well protected by an external repulsive barrier, the ratio approaches the rigorous lower bound $R=2/3.$ We also present results for $N=4$ bosons, sketch the extension to $N>4,$ and discuss various consequences.

Universal Properties of Two-Dimensional Boson Droplets

H.‐W. Hammer, Dam Thanh Son

We consider a system of N nonrelativistic bosons in two dimensions, interacting weakly via a short-range attractive potential. We show that for N large, but below some critical value, the properties of the N-boson bound state are universal. In particular, the ratio of the binding energies of (N+1)- and N-boson systems, B(N+1)/B(N), approaches a finite limit, approximately 8.567, at large N. We also confirm previous results that the three-body system has exactly two bound states. We find for the ground state B(0)(3)=16.522 688(1)B2 and for the excited state B(1)(3)=1.270 409 1(1)B2.

Weakly bound three-body systems with no bound subsystems

J. Goy, J. M. Richard, Sonia Fleck

We investigate the domain of coupling constants which achieve binding for a three-body system while none of the two-body subsystems is bound. We derive some general properties of the shape of the domain and rigorous upper bounds on its size, using a Hall-Post decomposition of the Hamiltonian. Numerical illustrations are provided in the case of a Yukawa potential, using a simple variational method.

Three-boson system with absorptive short range potential

Antonio Eduardo Assis Amorim, Lauro Tomio, T. Frederico

We study the properties of the three-boson system with absorption, through a short range interaction in the limit where the range reduces to zero. We derive an analytic expression for the three-boson width that relates it to the real part of the three-boson energy, two-boson binding energy, and decay constant. One of the characteristics of this expression is that, in this limit, the ratio between the width and the three-boson binding energy is proportional to the range.

Many-particle systems V. Zero-range interactions

Richard L. Hall

Close upper and lowei bounds are found on the binding energy of a system of N identical bosons interacting in one dimension by an attractive square-well pair potential. In the limit in which the potential has the shape of a δ function the bounds are found to be consistent with McGuire's exact solution. In three dimensions the limit of vanishingly small range, in which the two-particle binding energy is kept constant, gives infinite binding to the N -particle system, in agreement with Thomas's theorem Consideration of other limiting Proc.esses eliminates an apparent contradiction between Thomas and Svartholm.

Universal Properties of the Four-Boson System in Two Dimensions

Platter, L., H.‐W. Hammer, Ulf-G. Meißner

We consider the nonrelativistic four-boson system in two dimensions interacting via a short-range attractive potential. For a weakly attractive potential with one shallow two-body bound state with binding energy B-2, the binding energies B-N of shallow N-body bound states are universal and thus do not depend on the details of the interaction potential. We compute the four-body binding energies in an effective quantum mechanics approach. There are exactly two bound states: the ground state with B-4((0)) = 197.33(1)B-2 and one excited state with B-4((1)) = 25.5 (1)B-2. We compare our results to recent predictions for N-body bound states with large N much greater than 1.

Effective mass of three-body complexes for finite-range potentials on a lattice

S. Rudin

For the bound state of three identical lattice bosons interacting via attractive potentials (with strength U, range r, and repulsive core ${U}_{0}$) we investigate how its mass depends on U for large U. We find that the mobility of this bound complex depends strongly on r and that for a nearest-neighbor interaction (r=1) it may depend strongly on ${U}_{0}$.

We estimate the ratio R=g3/g2{R=g}_{3}{/g}_{2}R=g3/g2 of the critical coupling constants g2{g}_{2}g2 and g3{g}_{3}g3 that are required to achieve binding of two or three bosons, respectively, with a short-range interaction, and examine how this ratio depends on the shape of the potential. On the other hand, for an attractive well protected by an external repulsive barrier, the ratio approaches the rigorous lower bound R=2/3.R=2/3.R=2/3.
