Harmonically trapped four-boson system

Abstract

Four identical spinless bosons with purely attractive two-body short-range interactions and repulsive three-body interactions under external spherically symmetric harmonic confinement are considered. The repulsive three-body potential prevents the formation of deeply bound states with molecular character. The low-energy spectrum with vanishing orbital angular momentum and positive parity for infinitely large two-body $s$-wave scattering length is analyzed in detail. Using the three-body contact, states are classified as universal, quasiuniversal, or strongly nonuniversal. Connections with the zero-range interaction model are discussed. The energy spectrum is mapped out as a function of the two-body $s$-wave scattering length ${a}_{s}, {a}_{s}>0$. In the weakly to medium-strongly interacting regime, one of the states approaches the energy obtained for a hard-core interaction model. This state is identified as the energetically lowest-lying ``BEC state.'' Structural properties are also presented.

Energy spectrum of harmonically trapped two-component Fermi gases: Three- and four-particle problem

K. M. Daily, D. Blume

Trapped two-component Fermi gases allow the investigation of the so-called BCS-BEC crossover by tuning the interspecies atom-atom $s$-wave scattering length ${a}^{(\mathit{aa})}$ from attractive to repulsive, including vanishing and infinitely large values. Here, we numerically determine the energy spectrum of the equal-mass spin-balanced four-fermion system---the smallest few-particle system that exhibits BCS-BEC crossoverlike behavior---as a function of ${a}^{(\mathit{aa})}$ using the stochastic variational approach. For comparative purposes, we also treat the two- and three-particle systems. States with vanishing and finite total angular momenta as well as with natural and unnatural parities are considered. In addition, the energy spectrum of weakly attractive and weakly repulsive gases is characterized by employing a perturbative framework that utilizes hyperspherical coordinates. The hyperspherical coordinate approach allows the straightforward assignment of quantum numbers and furthermore provides great insight into the strongly interacting unitary regime.

Universal relations for a trapped four-fermion system with arbitrary s -wave scattering length

D. Blume, K. M. Daily

A two-component four-fermion system with equal masses, interspecies $s$-wave scattering length ${a}_{s}$, and vanishing intraspecies interactions under external spherically symmetric harmonic confinement is considered. Using a correlated Gaussian basis set expansion approach, we determine the energies and various structural properties of the energetically lowest-lying gaslike state throughout the crossover for various ranges of the underlying two-body potential. Extrapolating to the zero-range limit, our numerical results show explicitly that the total energy, the trap energy, as well as certain aspects of the pair distribution function and of the momentum distribution are related through the so-called integrated contact intensity $I({a}_{s})$. Furthermore, it is shown explicitly that the total energy and the trap energy are related through a generalized virial theorem that accounts for a nonzero range.

Unitary Quantum Three-Body Problem in a Harmonic Trap

Félix Werner, Yvan Castin

We consider either 3 spinless bosons or 3 equal mass spin-1/2 fermions, interacting via a short-range potential of infinite scattering length and trapped in an isotropic harmonic potential. For a zero-range model, we obtain analytically the exact spectrum and eigenfunctions: for fermions all the states are universal; for bosons there is a coexistence of decoupled universal and efimovian states. All the universal states, even the bosonic ones, have a tiny 3-body loss rate. For a finite range model, we numerically find for bosons a coupling between zero angular momentum universal and efimovian states; the coupling is so weak that, for realistic values of the interaction range, these bosonic universal states remain long-lived and observable.

Occupation numbers of the harmonically trapped few-boson system

K. M. Daily, Xiangyu Yin, D. Blume

We consider a harmonically trapped dilute $N$-boson system described by a low-energy Hamiltonian with pairwise interactions. We determine the condensate fraction, defined in terms of the largest occupation number, of the weakly interacting $N$-boson system ($N\ensuremath{\geqslant}2$) by employing a perturbative treatment within the framework of second quantization. The one-body density matrix and the corresponding occupation numbers are compared with those obtained by solving the two-body problem with zero-range interactions exactly. Our expressions are also compared with high precision ab initio calculations for Bose gases with $N=2--4$ that interact through finite-range two-body model potentials. Nonuniversal corrections are identified to enter at subleading order, confirming that different low-energy Hamiltonians, constructed to yield the same energy, may yield different occupation numbers. Lastly, we consider the strongly interacting three-boson system under spherically symmetric harmonic confinement and determine its occupation numbers as a function of the three-body ``Efimov parameter.''

Universal Behavior of the Energy of Trapped Few-Boson Systems with Large Scattering Length

S. Jonsell, H. Heiselberg, C. J. Pethick

We calculate energy levels of two and three bosons trapped in a harmonic oscillator potential with oscillator length ${a}_{\mathrm{o}\mathrm{s}\mathrm{c}}$. The atoms are assumed to interact through a short-range potential with a scattering length $a$, and the short-distance behavior of the three-body wave function is characterized by a parameter $\ensuremath{\theta}$. For large positive $a/{a}_{\mathrm{o}\mathrm{s}\mathrm{c}}$, the energies of states that, in the absence of the trap, correspond to three free atoms approach values independent of $a$ and $\ensuremath{\theta}$. For other states, the $\ensuremath{\theta}$ dependence of the energy is strong, but the energy is independent of $a$ for $|a/{a}_{\mathrm{o}\mathrm{s}\mathrm{c}}|\ensuremath{\gg}1$.

Trapped Bose gases with large positive scattering length

M Thøgersen, D. V Fedorov, A. S Jensen

We calculate the energy and the condensate fraction of a system of trapped bosons interacting via a short-range two-body potential with positive scattering length. The potential is attractive and has a two-body bound state. When the scattering length is small compared to the trap length the system is model independent: all potential models —attractive, repulsive and zero-range— provide similar results. When the scattering length is large the attractive model differs qualitatively from the repulsive and zero-range models. In this regime the system with attractive potential becomes independent of the scattering length, with both the energy and the condensate fraction converging towards finite constants.
