3D BEC Bright Solitons under Transverse Confinement

Abstract

The Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of a dilute gas of bosons is well described by the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation (3D GPE), that is a nonlinear Schrödinger equation. By imposing a transverse confinement the BEC can travel only in the cylindrical axial direction. We show that in this case the BEC with attractive interaction admits a 3D bright soliton solution which generalizes the text-book one, that is valid in the one-dimensional limit (1D GPE). Contrary to the 1D case, the 3D bright soliton exists only below a critical number of Bosons that depends on the extent of confinement. Finally, we find that the 3D bright soliton collapses if its density excedes a critical value. Our results are obtained by using a nonpolynomial Schrödinger equation (NPSE), an effective one-dimensional equation derived from the 3D GPE.

Solitary-waves of the Nonpolynomial Schrodinger Equation: Bright Solitons in Bose-Einstein Condensates

Luca Salasnich

Recently we have derived an effective one-dimensional nonpolynomial Schrödinger equation (NPSE) [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 65}, 043614 (2002)] that accurately describes atomic Bose-Einstein condensates under transverse harmonic confinement. In this paper we analyze the stability of the solitary-wave solutions of NPSE by means of the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion. Stable self-focusing solutions of NPSE are precisely the 3D bright solitons experimentally found in Bose-Einstein condensates [Nature {\bf 417}, 150 (2002); Science {\bf 296}, 1290 (2002)]. These self-focusing solutions generalize the ones obtained with the standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) and take into account the formation of instabilities in the transverse direction. We prove that neither cubic nor cubic-quintic approximations of NPSE are able to reproduce the unstable branch of the solitary-wave solutions. Moreover, we show that the analitically found critical point of NPSE is in remarkable good agreement with recent numerical computations of 3D GPE. We also discuss the formation of multiple solitons by a sudden change of the sign of the nonlinear strength. This formation can be interpreted in terms of the modulational instability of the time-dependent macroscopic wave function of the Bose condensate. In particular, we derive an accurate analytical formula for the number of multiple bright solitons.

Condensate bright solitons under transverse confinement

Luca Salasnich, Alberto Parola, L. Reatto

We investigate the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensate bright solitons made of alkali-metal atoms with negative scattering length and under harmonic confinement in the transverse direction. Contrary to the one-dimensional (1D) case, the 3D bright soliton exists only below a critical attractive interaction that depends on the extent of confinement. Such a behavior is also found in multisoliton condensates with box boundary conditions. We obtain numerical and analytical estimates of the critical strength beyond which the solitons do not exist. By using an effective 1D nonpolynomial nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation, which accurately takes into account the transverse dynamics of cigarlike condensates, we numerically simulate the dynamics of the ``soliton train'' reported in a recent experiment [Nature (London) 417, 150 (2002)]. Then, analyzing the macroscopic quantum tunneling of the bright soliton on a Gaussian barrier, we find that its interference in the tunneling region is strongly suppressed with respect to nonsolitonic case; moreover, the tunneling through a barrier breaks the shape invariance of the matter wave. Finally, we show that the collapse of the soliton is induced by the scattering on the barrier or by the collision with another matter wave when the density reaches a critical value, for which we derive an accurate analytical formula.

Quasi-one-dimensional approximation for Bose–Einstein condensates transversely trapped by a funnel potential

Mateus C. P. dos Santos, Boris A. Malomed, Wesley Bueno Cardoso

Abstract Starting from the standard three-dimensional (3D) Gross–Pitaevskii equation (GPE) and using a variational approximation, we derive an effective one-dimensional nonpolynomial Schrödinger equation (1D-NPSE) governing the axial dynamics of atomic Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) under the action of a singular but physically relevant funnel-shaped transverse trap, i.e. an attractive 2D potential ∼−1/ r (where r is the radial coordinate in the transverse plane), in combination with the repulsive self-interaction. Wave functions of the trapped BEC are regular, in spite of the potential’s singularity. The model applies to a condensate of particles (small molecules) carrying a permanent electric dipole moment in the field of a uniformly charged axial thread, as well as to a quantum gas of magnetic atoms pulled by an axial electric current. By means of numerical simulations, we verify that the effective 1D-NPSE provides accurate static and dynamical results, in comparison to the full 3D GPE, for both repulsive and attractive signs of the intrinsic nonlinearity.

Multi Solitons of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a Three-Dimensional Ring

Luca Salasnich

A Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) made of alkali-metal atoms at ultra-low temperatures is well described by the three-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation, the so-called Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE). Here we consider an attractive BEC in a ring and by solving the GPE we predict the existence of bright solitons with single and multi-peaks, showing that they have a limited domain of dynamical stability. We also discuss finite-temperature effects on the transition from the uniform phase to the localized phase.

Bright solitary waves and trapped solutions in Bose–Einstein condensates with attractive interactions

Nicholas G. Parker, Simon L. Cornish, Charles S. Adams +1 more

We analyse the static solutions of attractive Bose–Einstein condensates under transverse confinement, both with and without axial confinement. By full numerical solution of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation and variational methods we map out the condensate solutions, their energetic properties and their critical points for instability. With no axial confinement a bright solitary wave solution will tend to decay by dispersion unless the interaction energy is close to the critical value for collapse. In contrast, with axial confinement the only decay mechanism is collapse. The energetic stability of a bright solitary wave solution against decay increases with higher radial confinement. Finally, we consider the stability of dynamical states containing up to four solitons and find good agreement with recent experiments.
