Abstract

We analyse the static solutions of attractive Bose–Einstein condensates under transverse confinement, both with and without axial confinement. By full numerical solution of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation and variational methods we map out the condensate solutions, their energetic properties and their critical points for instability. With no axial confinement a bright solitary wave solution will tend to decay by dispersion unless the interaction energy is close to the critical value for collapse. In contrast, with axial confinement the only decay mechanism is collapse. The energetic stability of a bright solitary wave solution against decay increases with higher radial confinement. Finally, we consider the stability of dynamical states containing up to four solitons and find good agreement with recent experiments.

3D BEC Bright Solitons under Transverse Confinement

Luca Salasnich

The Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of a dilute gas of bosons is well described by the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation (3D GPE), that is a nonlinear Schrödinger equation. By imposing a transverse confinement the BEC can travel only in the cylindrical axial direction. We show that in this case the BEC with attractive interaction admits a 3D bright soliton solution which generalizes the text-book one, that is valid in the one-dimensional limit (1D GPE). Contrary to the 1D case, the 3D bright soliton exists only below a critical number of Bosons that depends on the extent of confinement. Finally, we find that the 3D bright soliton collapses if its density excedes a critical value. Our results are obtained by using a nonpolynomial Schrödinger equation (NPSE), an effective one-dimensional equation derived from the 3D GPE.

Theoretical studies of bright solitons in trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

Andrew David Martin

Bright solitary-waves may be created in dilute Bose-Einstein condensates of at tractively interacting atoms in one dimensional regimes. In integrable systems, such solitary waves are particle-like objects called solitons. We investigate the consequences of non-integrability on the solitary waves in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates caused by an axial harmonic trap, and non-integrability caused by three dimensional effects. To analyse the soliton-like nature of the solitary-waves in an axial harmonic trap, a particle analogy for the solitary-waves is formulated. Exact Soliton solutions exist in the absence of an external trapping potential, which behave in a particle-like manner, and we find the particle analogy we employ to be a good model also when a harmonic trapping potential is present up to a gradual shift in the trajectories when the harmonic trap period is short compared with the, collision time of the solitons. We find that the collision time of the solions is dependent on the relative phase of the solitons as they collide. In the case of two solitons, the particle model is integrable, and the dynamics are completely regular. In the case of a system of two solitary waves of equal norm, the solitons are shown to retain their phase difference for repeated collisions. The extension to three particles supports both regular and chaotic regimes. The trajectory shift observed for two solitons carrier over to the case of three solitons. This shift aside, the agreement between the particle model and the wave dynamics remains good, even in chaotic regimes. We predict that these chaotic regimes will be an indicator of rapid depletion of the condensate due to quantum transitions of the condensate particles into non-condensate modes. To analyse the residual effects of the three dimensional nature of the solitary waves, we use a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an additional quintic term. We perform variational calculations, and confirm the collapse of a soliton when the number of particles contained therein is increased past a critical number. We investigate the effects of varying the axial trap frequency and scattering length on the critical number. We propose a method to model particle exchange between solitons by extending the variational treatment to two solitons.

Solitary-waves of the Nonpolynomial Schrodinger Equation: Bright Solitons in Bose-Einstein Condensates

Luca Salasnich

Recently we have derived an effective one-dimensional nonpolynomial Schrödinger equation (NPSE) [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 65}, 043614 (2002)] that accurately describes atomic Bose-Einstein condensates under transverse harmonic confinement. In this paper we analyze the stability of the solitary-wave solutions of NPSE by means of the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion. Stable self-focusing solutions of NPSE are precisely the 3D bright solitons experimentally found in Bose-Einstein condensates [Nature {\bf 417}, 150 (2002); Science {\bf 296}, 1290 (2002)]. These self-focusing solutions generalize the ones obtained with the standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) and take into account the formation of instabilities in the transverse direction. We prove that neither cubic nor cubic-quintic approximations of NPSE are able to reproduce the unstable branch of the solitary-wave solutions. Moreover, we show that the analitically found critical point of NPSE is in remarkable good agreement with recent numerical computations of 3D GPE. We also discuss the formation of multiple solitons by a sudden change of the sign of the nonlinear strength. This formation can be interpreted in terms of the modulational instability of the time-dependent macroscopic wave function of the Bose condensate. In particular, we derive an accurate analytical formula for the number of multiple bright solitons.

Dynamics of bright matter-wave solitons in a Bose–Einstein condensate with inhomogeneous scattering length

F. Kh. Abdullaev, A. Gammal, Lauro Tomio

We investigate dynamical effects of a bright soliton in Bose–Einstein condensed (BEC) systems with local and smooth space variations of the two-body atomic scattering length. It includes a discussion about the possible observation of a new type of standing nonlinear atomic matter wave in cigar-type traps. A rich dynamics is observed in the interaction between the soliton and an inhomogeneity. By considering an analytical time-dependent variational approach and also full numerical simulation of one-dimensional and three-dimensional Gross–Pitaevskii equations, we study processes such as trapping, reflection and transmission of the bright matter soliton due to the impurity. We also derive conditions for the collapse of the bright solitary wave, considering a quasi-one-dimensional BEC with attractive local inhomogeneity.

Bright solitary waves of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates under rotation

N. A. Jamaludin, Nicholas G. Parker, A. Martin

We analyze the rotation of bright solitary waves formed of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive atomic interactions. By employing a variational technique and assuming an irrotational quadrupolar flow field, we map out the variational solutions in the rotating frame. In particular, we show that rotation has a considerable stabilizing effect on the system, significantly raising the critical threshold for collapse of the bright solitary waves.
