Chaotic Rydberg Atoms with Broken Time-Reversal Symmetry

Krzysztof Sacha, Jakub Zakrzewski, Dominique Delande

The dynamics of Rydberg states of atomic hydrogen perturbed simultaneously by a static electric field and a resonant microwave field of elliptical polarization is analyzed in the quantum perturbative limit of small amplitudes. For some configurations, the secular motion (i.e., evolution in time of the elliptical electronic trajectory) may be classically predominantly chaotic. By changing the orientation of the static field with respect to the polarization of the microwave field, one can modify the global symmetries of the system and break any generalized time-reversal invariance. This has a dramatic effect on the statistical properties of the energy levels.

Transition to deterministic chaos in a periodically driven quantum system and breaking of the time-reversal symmetry

Uwe Schwengelbeck, Farhad H. M. Faisal

The phenomenon of transition from regular to chaotic dynamics in a periodically driven quantum system is demonstrated. The associated quantum Lyapunov numbers are determined analytically. A numerical experiment is made to test the nature of time evolution predicted by the theory. In contrast to the evolution in the regular domain, the passage to deterministic quantum chaos is found to break the time-reversal symmetry of the quantum dynamics, whenever the latter cannot be followed with infinite precision.

Statistical theory of Fano resonances in atomic and molecular photoabsorption

W. Ihra

A statistical theory of Fano resonances is presented for highly excited atomic and molecular systems with a classical chaotic limit. The probability distribution of the Fano parameter, which characterizes the asymmetry profile of a single resonance, is derived both for the case when the quantum system obeys time-reversal symmetry and when time-reversal symmetry is broken. Applications of the theory to photodissociation spectra of molecules and autoionization of Rydberg atoms are discussed.
