Chaotic Rydberg Atoms with Broken Time-Reversal Symmetry

Abstract

The dynamics of Rydberg states of atomic hydrogen perturbed simultaneously by a static electric field and a resonant microwave field of elliptical polarization is analyzed in the quantum perturbative limit of small amplitudes. For some configurations, the secular motion (i.e., evolution in time of the elliptical electronic trajectory) may be classically predominantly chaotic. By changing the orientation of the static field with respect to the polarization of the microwave field, one can modify the global symmetries of the system and break any generalized time-reversal invariance. This has a dramatic effect on the statistical properties of the energy levels.

Driven Rydberg Atoms Reveal Quartic Level Repulsion

Krzysztof Sacha, Jakub Zakrzewski

The dynamics of Rydberg states of a hydrogen atom subjected simultaneously to uniform static electric field and two microwave fields with commensurate frequencies is considered in the range of small field amplitudes. In the certain range of the parameters of the system the classical secular motion of the electronic ellipse reveals chaotic behavior. Quantum mechanically, when the fine structure of the atom is taken into account, the energy level statistics obey predictions appropriate for the symplectic Gaussian random matrix ensemble.

Classical and quantum mechanics of an integrable limit of the hydrogen atom in combined circularly polarized microwave and magnetic fields

M. J. Raković, T. Uzer, David Farrelly

The hydrogen atom interacting with a circularly polarized microwave field and a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of polarization is, in general, a nonintegrable system that may exhibit strongly chaotic motion. However, two integrable limits are known, one of which is separable in elliptical coordinates. A detailed investigation of the classical and quantum mechanics of the separable limit is presented.

Coherent states in a Rydberg atom: Classical mechanics

Ernestine Lee, Andrea F. Brunello, David Farrelly

The interaction of a hydrogen or Rydberg atom with a circularly polarized microwave field leads to the creation of global equilibrium points that may be stable or unstable depending on the particulars of the applied field. The additional application of a magnetic field, perpendicular to the plane of polarization, can be used to manipulate both the nature and the stability of these points. We show that stable three-dimensional motion can be maintained that is localized at either a maximum or a minimum in the corresponding surface of zero velocity. At these equilibria, the zero-velocity surface may be locally quadratic in coordinates and stable harmonic-oscillator-like, nondispersive, coherent states can be supported. As the fields are varied, repeated order-chaos transitions may be observed, including various passages through rigorously integrable limits. Classical simulations are presented for a range of field strengths, and the effects of deviations of the microwave field from exactly circular polarization (i.e., elliptical polarization) are examined using a pulsating zero-velocity surface.

Ionization of Rydberg atoms by circularly and elliptically polarized microwave fields

Jennifer A. Griffiths, David Farrelly

A classical study of the dynamics of atomic Rydberg states interacting with both elliptically and circularly polarized microwave fields is presented. In recent experiments, enhanced ionization rates were observed in elliptically as opposed to circularly polarized fields. A classical phase-space simulation provides good qualitative agreement with experimental findings. These results are explained in terms of the breakdown of almost conserved quantities as the polarization of the field is changed from circular to elliptical.

Dynamical Stability of Quantum "Chaotic" Motion in a Hydrogen Atom

Giulio Casati, Boris V. Chirikov, Italo Guarneri +1 more

A simple numerical reversibility test which proves useful in exposing the chaotic nature of classical dynamical systems is applied to the quantum model of a hydrogen atom in a microwave field. The remarkable result is that, in spite of some apparent chaotic features, the quantum motion proves to be perfectly stable in contrast to the high instability of the classical chaotic motion.

Dynamic resonances in the autoionization Rydberg states of atomic systems

Nikolai N. Bezuglov, Gennady V. Golubkov, Andrey N. Klyucharev

Contemporary views on the formation of dynamic nonlinear resonances in isolated intermediate Rydberg quasi-molecular complexes formed by a single elementary act upon the slow collision highly excited atoms are discussed. A relation between the emergence of dynamic resonance and the quasi-intersection of atomic terms is revealed in the quasi-classical approximation. Relationships between the widths of dynamic resonances and the dipole matrix element leading to the corresponding quasi-intersections are determined. The physical reasons for the dynamic chaos regime are formulated. A quasi-classical statistical description is given of the diffusion ionization of an atomic complex with a dense network of quasi-intersections of terms. Development of the stochastic instability of the Rydberg electron trajectories due charge exchange inside the collision complex is considered. The effect the narrowing region of stochastic motion has when passing through the Coulomb convergence of the levels with a simultaneous drop in the ionization rate of quasi-molecular systems is predicted for external statistical magnetic and electric fields under conditions of Förster resonance.
