U_q(sl(2) as Dynamical Symmetry Algebra of the Quantum Hall Effect

Abstract

Quantum Hall effect wavefunctions corresponding to the filling factors 1/2p+1, 2/2p+1,..., 2p/2p+1, 1, are shown to form a basis of irreducible cyclic representation of the quantum algebra U_q(sl(2)) at q^{2p+1}=1. Thus, the wavefunctions Ψ_{P/Q} possessing filling factors P/Q<1 where Q is odd and P, Q are relatively prime integers are classified in terms of U_q(sl(2)). Adopted as dynamical symmetry this leads to non--existence of a ``universal microscopic theory" of the quantum Hall effect, defined as the eigenvalue problem of a differential operator O: O Ψ_ν=\ell_νΨ_ν. for ν=1,1/3,2/3,..., in the complex plane.

U_q(sl(2)) Classification of Quantum Hall Effect Wave Functions

Omer Faruk Dayi

Quantum Hall effect wave functions corresponding to the filling factors 1/2p+1, 2/2p+1, ..., 2p/2p+1, 1, where p is a positive integer are shown to form a basis of irreducible cyclic representation of the quantum group U_q(sl(2)) at q^{2p+1}=1. Thus, the wave functions possessing filling factors P/Q<1 where Q is odd and P, Q are relatively prime integers are classified in terms of U_q(sl(2)).

A matrix model for bilayered quantum Hall systems

Ahmed Jellal, Michael Schreiber

We develop a matrix model to describe bilayered quantum Hall fluids for a series of filling factors. Considering two coupling layers, and starting from a corresponding action, we construct its vacuum configuration at ν = q i K −1 ij q j , where K ij is a 2 × 2 matrix and q i is a vector. Our model allows us to reproduce several well-known wavefunctions. We show that the wavefunction Ψ ( m , m , n ) constructed years ago by Yoshioka, MacDonald and Girvin for the fractional quantum Hall effect at filling factor and in particular Ψ (3,3,1) at filling can be obtained from our vacuum configuration. The unpolarized Halperin wavefunction and especially that for the fractional quantum Hall state at filling factor can also be recovered from our approach. Generalization to more than two layers is straightforward.

SPIN-SINGLET LAUGHLIN-HALPERIN TYPE WAVEFUNCTIONS FOR THE QUANTUM HALL STATES

X. C. Xie, Fu‐Chun Zhang

We construct a class of spin-singlet wavefunctions for the filling factors ν=2/(2m±1), where m is an odd integer, and ν=1/2 quantum Hall states, based on Halperin’s generalization of the Laughlin wavefunction to systems without full spin polarization. The properties of the ν=2/(2m±1) states are consistent with the results obtained from the numerical calculations of small systems.

Study of Quantum Hall Effect and Its Relation to Conformal Field Theory

Shima Bahrampour Lomer, M. N. Najafi, Hosein Mohammadzadeh

The quantum Hall effect is one of the most challenging problems in condensed matter physics in which many rare physical phenomena like fractional charges and generally the fractional statistics are involved. In the integer quantum Hall effect the role of the disorder is more than others. The important point in describing these systems is that their bulk states should be gapful and in this sense the system should be incompressible. For describing the electron condensates in an arbitrary filling fraction with the odd denominator one needs the topological U(1) Chern-Simons effective field theory. Our motivation for using these field theories is the emergence of quantized conductivity. This effective field theory also has the ability of constructing the hierarchical fractional condensates with various filling factors. The excitations of these theories have fractional statistics which are investigated in this review. The non-Abelian Chern-Simons for quantum Hall systems will be also investigated. The interesting point is that the edge states of these systems are gapless and their excitations are equipped with the Kac-Moody algebra. The connection to the conformal field theories can be established using this point. The investigation of this correspondence is one of the aims of the present thesis. The connection to the logarithmic conformal field theories (e.g. for the Haldane-Rezaei wave function) is also reported in some works which will be addressed in this thesis.
