Topologically Protected Qubits from a Possible Non-Abelian Fractional Quantum Hall State

S. Das Sarma, Michael Hartley Freedman, Chetan Nayak

The Pfaffian state is an attractive candidate for the observed quantized Hall plateau at a Landau-level filling fraction nu=5/2. This is particularly intriguing because this state has unusual topological properties, including quasiparticle excitations with non-Abelian braiding statistics. In order to determine the nature of the nu=5/2 state, one must measure the quasiparticle braiding statistics. Here, we propose an experiment which can simultaneously determine the braiding statistics of quasiparticle excitations and, if they prove to be non-Abelian, produce a topologically protected qubit on which a logical Not operation is performed by quasiparticle braiding. Using the measured excitation gap at nu=5/2, we estimate the error rate to be 10(-30) or lower.

How SU(2)$_4$ Anyons are Z$_3$ Parafermions

Richard Fern, Johannes Kombe, Steven H. Simon

We consider the braid group representation which describes the non-abelian braiding statistics of the spin 1/2 1 / 2 particle world lines of an SU(2) _4 4 Chern-Simons theory. Up to an abelian phase, this is the same as the non-Abelian statistics of the elementary quasiparticles of the k=4 k = 4 Read-Rezayi quantum Hall state. We show that these braiding properties can be represented exactly using \mathbbm{Z}_3 parafermion operators.

Effect of Landau Level Mixing on Braiding Statistics

Steven H. Simon

We examine the effect of Landau level mixing on the braiding statistics of quasiparticles of Abelian and non-Abelian quantum Hall states. While path dependent geometric phases can perturb the Abelian part of the statistics, we find that the non-Abelian properties remain unchanged to an accuracy that is exponentially small in the distance between quasiparticles.
