Scaling algebras and short distance analysis for charge carrying quantum fields

Abstract

The method of scaling algebras, which has been introduced earlier as a means for analyzing the short-distance behaviour of quantum field theories in the setting of the model-independent, operator-algebraic approach, is extended to the case of fields carrying superselection charges. A criterion for the preservance of superselection charges in the short-distance scaling limit is proposed. Consequences of this preservance of superselection charges are studied. The conjugate charge of a preserved charge is also preserved, and the preservance of all charges of a quantum field theory in the scaling limit leads to equivalence of local and global intertwiners between superselection sectors.

SCALING ALGEBRAS AND SUPERSELECTION SECTORS: STUDY OF A CLASS OF MODELS

Claudio D’Antoni, Gerardo Morsella

We analyze a class of quantum field theory models illustrating some of the possibilities that have emerged in the general study of the short distance properties of superselection sectors, performed in a previous paper (together with R. Verch). In particular, we show that for each pair (G, N), with G a compact Lie group and N a closed normal subgroup, there is a net of observable algebras which has (a subset of) DHR sectors in 1-1 correspondence with classes of irreducible representations of G, and such that only the sectors corresponding to representations of G/N are preserved in the scaling limit. In the way of achieving this result, we derive sufficient conditions under which the scaling limit of a tensor product theory coincides with the product of the scaling limit theories.

Renormalization group in algebraic quantum field theory: past, present and future

Roberto Conti, Claudio D’Antoni, Gerardo Morsella

ABSTRACT. We present an overview of some recent results on the renormalization group analysis in the framework of local quantumphysics. In particular, we emphasize the role of the theory of superselection sectors, through themagnifying glass provided by the scaling limit, that leads to intrinsic notions of preserved and confined sectors. In the final section we discuss some further results and open problems. 1.

SCALING ALGEBRAS AND RENORMALIZATION GROUP IN ALGEBRAIC QUANTUM FIELD THEORY

Detlev Buchholz A, Rainer Verch

For any given algebra of local observables in Minkowski space an associated scaling algebra is constructed on which renormalization group (scaling) transformations act in a canonical manner. The method can be carried over to arbitrary space-time manifolds and provides a framework for the systematic analysis of the short distance properties of local quantum field theories. It is shown that every theory has a (possibly non-unique) scaling limit which can be classified according to its classical or quantum nature. Dilation invariant theories are stable under the action of the renormalization group. Within this framework the problem of wedge (Bisognano-Wichmann) duality in the scaling limit is discussed and some of its physical implications are outlined.

Scaling limits of integrable quantum field theories

Henning Bostelmann, Gandalf Lechner, Gerardo Morsella

Short distance scaling limits of a class of integrable models on two-dimensional Minkowski space are considered in the algebraic framework of quantum field theory. Making use of the wedge-local quantum fields generating these models, it is shown that massless scaling limit theories exist, and decompose into (twisted) tensor products of chiral, translation-dilation covariant field theories. On the subspace which is generated from the vacuum by the observables localized in finite light ray intervals, this symmetry can be extended to the M\\"obius group. The structure of the interval-localized algebras in the chiral models is discussed in two explicit examples.

Charged Quantum Fields Associated with Endomorphisms of CAR and CCR Algebras

Carsten Binnenhei

The appearance of the Cuntz algebras Od is a generic feature of local quantum field theory. This fact has been discovered by S. Doplicher and J. E. Roberts within the algebraic theory of superselection sectors. Generators of the Cuntz algebras arise as charged field operators which implement localized endomorphisms of the observable algebra. Whereas the existence of such operators can be derived from first principles, little is known about the actual construction of these fields in concrete models. In view of this apparent discrepancy, we develop a comprehensive theory of quasi-free endomorphisms of the CAR and CCR algebras which give rise to representations of the Cuntz algebras Od on Fock space. The number d is the statistics dimension of the endomorphism. It can be any power of 2 (including 1 and infinite) in the CAR case, but takes only the values 1 and infinite in the CCR case. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for implementability of quasi- free endomorphisms. By studying extensions of partial Fock states, we find that the semigroup of implementable quasi-free endomorphisms has a simple structure: It can be written as a product of a group of automorphisms which are close to the identity, and the semigroup of endomorphisms which leave the given Fock state invariant. We describe the construction of the implementers of a quasi-free endomorphism in terms of annihilation and creation operators in is a generic feature of local quantum field theory. We compare the structure of the semigroup of (gauge invariant) quasi-free endomorphisms with the generic superselection structure of quantum field theory.

Kosaki-Longo index and classification of charges in 2D quantum spin models

Pieter Naaijkens

We consider charge superselection sectors of two-dimensional quantum spin models corresponding to cone localisable charges, and prove that the number of equivalence classes of such charges is bounded by the Kosaki-Longo index of an inclusion of certain observable algebras. To demonstrate the power of this result we apply the theory to the toric code on a 2D infinite lattice. For this model we can compute the index of this inclusion, and conclude that there are four distinct irreducible charges in this model, in accordance with the analysis of the toric code model on compact surfaces. We also give a sufficient criterion for the non-degeneracy of the charge sectors, in the sense that Verlinde's matrix S is invertible.
