Analogue models forTand CPT violation in neutral-meson oscillations

Abstract

Analogue models for $\mathrm{CP}$ violation in neutral-meson systems are studied in a general framework. No-go results are obtained for models in classical mechanics that are nondissipative or that involve one-dimensional oscillators. A complete emulation is shown to be possible for a two-dimensional oscillator with rheonomic constraints, and an explicit example with spontaneous T and $\mathrm{CPT}$ violation is presented. The results have implications for analogue models with electrical circuits.

CLASSICAL ANALOGUE MODELS FOR T AND CPT VIOLATION

Ágnes Roberts

Classical-mechanical oscillating systems are analyzed to model CP violating neutral kaon oscillations. Through the identification of the key features of the quantum effective hamiltonian we search for similarities in the characteristic matrix of the classical systems. Some no-go results are found for undamped systems and for systems using two one-dimensional coupled oscillators. A model is presented emulating both T and spontaneous CPT violation.

Classical illustrations of CP violation in kaon decays

Jonathan L. Rosner, Scott A. Slezak

It is easy to construct classical two-state systems illustrating the behavior of the short-lived and long-lived neutral K mesons in the limit of CP conservation. The emulation of CP violation is more tricky, but is provided by the two-dimensional motion of a Foucault pendulum. Analogies are drawn between the pendulum and observables in neutral kaon decays. An emulation of CP and CPT violation using electric circuits is also discussed.

The quantum CP-violating kaon system reproduced in the electronic laboratory

M. Caruso, Huner Fanchiotti A, Carlos A. García Canal +2 more

The equivalence between the Schrödinger dynamics of a quantum system with a finite number of basis states and a classical dynamics is realized in terms of electric networks. The isomorphism that connects in a univocal way both dynamical systems was applied to the case of neutral mesons, kaons in particular, and the class of electric networks univocally related to the quantum system was analysed. Moreover, under CPT invariance, the relevant ϵ parameter that measures CP violation in the kaon system is reinterpreted in terms of network parameters. All these results were explicitly shown by means of both a numerical simulation of the implied networks and by constructing the corresponding circuits.

Tabletop time-reversal violation

Jonathan L. Rosner

Many electrical and mechanical systems with two normal modes are appropriate for illustrating the quantum mechanics of neutral kaons. The illustration of CP- or time-reversal violation in the neutral kaon system by mechanical or electrical analogues is more subtle. Some possibilities which could be realized in a tabletop demonstration are suggested.

Decoherence induced CPT violation and entangled neutral mesons

J. Bernabéu, Nick E. Mavromatos, Sarben Sarkar

We discuss two classes of semimicroscopic theoretical models of stochastic spacetime foam in quantum gravity and the associated effects on entangled states of neutral mesons, signalling an intrinsic breakdown of $CPT$ invariance. One class of models deals with a specific model of foam, initially constructed in the context of noncritical (Liouville) string theory, but viewed here in the more general context of effective quantum-gravity models. The relevant Hamiltonian perturbation, describing the interaction of the meson with the foam medium, consists of off-diagonal stochastic metric fluctuations, connecting distinct mass eigenstates (or the appropriate generalization thereof in the case of $K$-mesons), and it is proportional to the relevant momentum transfer (along the direction of motion of the meson pair). There are two kinds of $CPT$-violating effects in this case, which can be experimentally disentangled: one (termed ``$\ensuremath{\omega}$-effect'') is associated with the failure of the indistinguishability between the neutral meson and its antiparticle, and affects certain symmetry properties of the initial state of the two-meson system; the second effect is generated by the time evolution of the system in the medium of the spacetime foam, and can result in time-dependent contributions of the $\ensuremath{\omega}$-effect type in the time profile of the two-meson state. Estimates of both effects are given, which show that, at least in certain models, such effects are not far from the sensitivity of experimental facilities available currently or in the near future. The other class of quantum-gravity models involves a medium of gravitational fluctuations which behaves like a ``thermal bath''. In this model both of the above-mentioned intrinsic $CPT$ violation effects are not valid.
