Tabletop time-reversal violation

Jonathan L. Rosner

Abstract

Many electrical and mechanical systems with two normal modes are appropriate for illustrating the quantum mechanics of neutral kaons. The illustration of CP- or time-reversal violation in the neutral kaon system by mechanical or electrical analogues is more subtle. Some possibilities which could be realized in a tabletop demonstration are suggested.

Classical illustrations of CP violation in kaon decays

Jonathan L. Rosner, Scott A. Slezak

It is easy to construct classical two-state systems illustrating the behavior of the short-lived and long-lived neutral K mesons in the limit of CP conservation. The emulation of CP violation is more tricky, but is provided by the two-dimensional motion of a Foucault pendulum. Analogies are drawn between the pendulum and observables in neutral kaon decays. An emulation of CP and CPT violation using electric circuits is also discussed.

Is CP Invariance Violated?

Dragutin Lalović

The well-known fact that the existing quantum mechanical formalism is inconsistent with the energy-time uncertainty-relation postulate is shown to play a crucial role in the logical deduction leading to the conclusion that $\mathrm{CP}$ invariance is violated in some neutral kaon decays. It is therefore argued that if one believes in the existence of the energy-time uncertainty relation, then one has to accept that none of the existing experimental facts can unambiguously be interpreted as evidence against the universal validity of $\mathrm{CP}$ invariance.

Search for CPT violation and decoherence effects in the neutral kaon system

ANTONIO DI DOMENICO

The neutral kaon system offers a unique possibility to perform fundamental tests of CPT invariance, as well as of the basic principles of quantum mechanics. The most recent limits on several kinds of possible CPT violation and decoherence mechanisms, which in some cases might be justified in a quantum gravity framework, are reviewed, including the latest results obtained by the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE e + e - collider. No deviation from the expectations of quantum mechanics and CPT symmetry is observed, while the precision of the measurements, in some cases, reaches the interesting Planck scale region.
