Abstract

For the study of Ising models of general spin S on the square lattice, we have combined our recently extended high-temperature expansions with the low-temperature expansions derived some time ago by Enting, Guttmann, and Jensen. We have computed various critical parameters and improved the estimates of others. Moreover, the properties of hyperscaling and of universality (spin-S independence) of exponents and of various dimensionless amplitude combinations have been verified accurately. Assuming the validity of the lattice-lattice scaling, from our estimates of critical amplitudes for the square lattice we have also obtained estimates of the corresponding amplitudes for the spin-S Ising model on the triangular, honeycomb, and kagom\'e lattices.

Susceptibility amplitudes for the two-dimensional Ising model

Anthony John Guttmann

The recent critical amplitude calculation of Barouch, McCoy, and Wu for the susceptibility of the Ising model on a square lattice is extended to yield amplitudes for the triangular, honeycomb, and kagom\'e lattices. The extension assumes the validity of the generalized law of corresponding states---as first postulated by Betts, Guttmann, and Joyce---for the two-dimensional Ising model.

Critical universality and hyperscaling revisited for Ising models of general spin using extended high-temperature series

P. Butera, M. Comi

We have extended through ${\ensuremath{\beta}}^{23}$ the high-temperature expansion of the second field derivative of the susceptibility for Ising models of general spin, with nearest-neighbor interactions, on the simple cubic and the body-centered cubic lattices. Moreover, the expansions for the nearest-neighbor correlation function, the susceptibility, and the second correlation moment have been extended up to ${\ensuremath{\beta}}^{25}.$ Taking advantage of these new data, we can improve the accuracy of direct estimates of critical exponents and of hyperuniversal combinations of critical amplitudes such as the renormalized four-point coupling ${g}_{r}$ or the quantity usually denoted by ${R}_{\ensuremath{\xi}}^{+}.$ In particular, we obtain $\ensuremath{\gamma}=1.2371(1),$ $\ensuremath{\nu}=0.6299(2),$ ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{4}=4.3647(20),$ ${g}_{r}=1.404(3),$ and ${R}_{\ensuremath{\xi}}^{+}=0.2668(5).$ We have used a variety of series extrapolation procedures and, in some of the analyses, we have assumed that the leading correction-to-scaling exponent $\ensuremath{\theta}$ is universal and roughly known. We have also verified, to high precision, the validity of the hyperscaling relation and of the universality property both with regard to the lattice structure and to the value of the spin.

Extended universality of the Ising model

Douglas S. Ritchie, Donald D. Betts

An extension of the critical-phenomena universality hypothesis assumed previously to be valid for less singular terms is shown to be invalid. A reformulated extension of the universality hypothesis is found to be valid exactly for the spin-1/2 Ising model on the triangular, square, and honeycomb lattices, and, further support is supplied by high- and low-temperature expansions for the susceptibility. The extension fails however for the Ising model on the kagome\r{} lattice and for the spherical model. At present there are insufficient data to test the extended principle for other models or for experimental systems.

Low temperature critical behaviour of the Ising model with spin S>1/2

P F Fox, Anthony John Guttmann

Low temperature series expansions for the Ising model with spin S=1 and S= 3 / 2 are derived for a number of two and three dimensional lattices. For each spin-lattice combination the critical point is estimated, and then the critical exponents beta and gamma ' with their corresponding critical amplitudes are also estimated. The principal conclusion is that there is no compelling evidence to suggest that the above critical exponents differ from their S= 1 / 2 values.

Low-temperature series expansions for the square lattice Ising model with spin

Iwan Jensen, Anthony John Guttmann, Ian Graham Enting

We derive low-temperature series (in the variable ) for the spontaneous magnetization, susceptibility, and specific heat of the spin-S Ising model on the square lattice for , 2, , and 3. We determine the location of the physical critical point and non-physical singularities. The number of non-physical singularities closer to the origin than the physical critical point grows quite rapidly with S. The critical exponents at the singularities which are closest to the origin and for which we have reasonably accurate estimates are independent of S. Due to the many non-physical singularities, the estimates for the physical critical point and exponents are poor for higher values of S, though consistent with universality.

Exact Universal Amplitude Ratios for Two-Dimensional Ising Models and a Quantum Spin Chain

N. Sh. Izmailian, Chin‐Kun Hu

Let ${f}_{N}$ and ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{N}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ represent, respectively, the free energy per spin and the inverse spin-spin correlation length of the critical Ising model on a $N\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\ensuremath{\infty}$ lattice, with ${f}_{N}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{f}_{\ensuremath{\infty}}$ as $N\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$. We obtain analytic expressions for ${a}_{k}$ and ${b}_{k}$ in the expansions $N({f}_{N}{\ensuremath{-}f}_{\ensuremath{\infty}})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\Sigma}{k\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1}^{\ensuremath{\infty}}{a}_{k}/{N}^{2k\ensuremath{-}1}$ and ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{N}^{\ensuremath{-}1}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\Sigma}{k\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1}^{\ensuremath{\infty}}{b}_{k}/{N}^{2k\ensuremath{-}1}$ for square, honeycomb, and plane-triangular lattices, and find that ${b}_{k}/{a}_{k}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}({2}^{2k}\ensuremath{-}1)/({2}^{2k\ensuremath{-}1}\ensuremath{-}1)$ for all of these lattices, i.e., the amplitude ratio ${b}_{k}/{a}_{k}$ is universal. We also obtain similar results for a critical quantum spin chain and find that such results could be understood from a perturbated conformal field theory.
