Vortex in a weakly relativistic Bose gas at zero temperature and relativistic fluid approximation

Abstract

The Bogoliubov procedure in quantum field theory is used to describe a relativistic almost ideal Bose gas at zero temperature. Special attention is given to the study of a vortex. The radius of the vortex in the field description is compared to that obtained in the relativistic fluid approximation. The Kelvin waves are studied and, for long wavelengths, the dispersion relation is obtained by an asymptotic matching method and compared with the non-relativistic result.

Phonon Dispersion Relation in Weakly Coupled Bose Gas Beyond Bogoliubov Approximation

Jan Dereziński, Lorenzo Pettinari

We study the quasiparticle dispersion relation for a homogeneous Bose gas in a large cubic box with periodic boundary conditions at zero temperature. Inspired by the Bogoliubov method, we rearrange the usual Bose gas Hamiltonian in a form adapted to perturbation theory in the weak-coupling regime, both in the canonical and grand-canonical setting. We compute the first non-trivial corrections to the dispersion relation in both settings. We show that for small momenta they are linear in the absolute value of the momentum. Thus, in this approximation phonons have a well-defined velocity, which we compute.

Normal modes of a vortex in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate

Anatoly A. Svidzinsky, Alexander L. Fetter

A hydrodynamic description is used to study the normal modes of a vortex in a zero-temperature Bose-Einstein condensate. In the Thomas-Fermi limit, the circulating superfluid velocity far from the vortex core provides a small perturbation that splits the originally degenerate normal modes of a vortex-free condensate. The relative frequency shifts are small in all cases considered (they vanish for the lowest dipole mode with $|m|=1$), suggesting that the vortex is stable. The Bogoliubov equations serve to verify the existence of helical waves, similar to those of a vortex line in an unbounded weakly interacting Bose gas. In the large-condensate (small-core) limit, the condensate wave function reduces to that of a straight vortex in an unbounded condensate; the corresponding Bogoliubov equations have no bound-state solutions that are uniform along the symmetry axis and that decay exponentially far from the vortex core.

Superfluidity of a Raman spin-orbit-coupled Bose gas at finite temperature

Xiao-Long Chen, Xia-Ji Liu, Hui Hu

We investigate the superfluidity of a three-dimensional weakly interacting Bose gas with a one-dimensional Raman-type spin-orbit coupling at both zero and finite temperatures. Using the imaginary-time Green's function within the Bogoliubov approximation, we explicitly derive analytic expressions of the current-current response functions in the plane-wave and zero-momentum phases, from which we extract the superfluid density in the limits of long wavelength and zero frequency. At zero temperature, we check that the resultant superfluid density agrees exactly with our previous analytic prediction obtained from a phase-twist approach. Both results also satisfy a generalized Josephson relation in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. At finite temperature, we find a significant nonmonotonic temperature dependence of superfluid density near the transition from the plane-wave phase to the zero-momentum phase. We show that this nontrivial behavior might be understood from the sound velocity, which has a similar temperature dependence. The nonmonotonic temperature dependence is also shared by Landau critical velocity, above which the spin-orbit-coupled Bose gas loses its superfluidity. Our results would be useful for further theoretical and experimental studies of superfluidity in exotic spin-orbit-coupled quantum gases.

Structure and Stability of Vortices in Dilute Bose-Einstein Condensates at Ultralow Temperatures

Suvi Mirjami Virtanen, Tapio Simula, M.M. Salomaa

We compute the structure of a quantized vortex line in a harmonically trapped dilute atomic Bose-Einstein condensate using the Popov version of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov mean-field theory. The vortex is shown to be (meta)stable in a nonrotating trap even in the zero-temperature limit, thus confirming that weak particle interactions induce for the condensed gas a fundamental property characterizing "classical" superfluids. We present the structure of the vortex at ultralow temperatures and discuss the crucial effect of the thermal gas component to its energetic stability.

Vortices in an Imperfect Bose Gas. II. Single-Particle Excitations

Alexander L. Fetter

The single-particle excitations of an imperfect Bose gas with a vortex in the condensate are studied using the Bogoliubov approximation. The problem is reduced to an eigenvalue equation, whose solution yields both the single-particle energies and the eigenfunction expansion of the single-particle Green's function. The spectrum of the eigenvalues contains a discrete portion (bound states) and a continuous portion (scattering states). The lowest eigenvalue corresponding to angular momentum $l=0$ and $l=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$ is determined variationally. In the long-wavelength limit, the eigenvalue for $l=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$ agrees with the frequency of normal modes calculated by Kelvin and Pitaevskii. The density of noncondensed particles is expressed in terms of the single-particle Green's function and is shown to be finite at the center of the vortex.
