Phonon Dispersion Relation in Weakly Coupled Bose Gas Beyond Bogoliubov Approximation

Abstract

We study the quasiparticle dispersion relation for a homogeneous Bose gas in a large cubic box with periodic boundary conditions at zero temperature. Inspired by the Bogoliubov method, we rearrange the usual Bose gas Hamiltonian in a form adapted to perturbation theory in the weak-coupling regime, both in the canonical and grand-canonical setting. We compute the first non-trivial corrections to the dispersion relation in both settings. We show that for small momenta they are linear in the absolute value of the momentum. Thus, in this approximation phonons have a well-defined velocity, which we compute.

Damping of phonons in Bose gas at low temperatures

Jan Dereziński, Lorenzo Pettinari

We consider a homogeneous Bose gas in a large cubic box with periodic boundary conditions interacting with a small potential with a positive Fourier transform. We compute the imaginary part of the phononic excitation spectrum in the lowest order of perturbation theory in the thermodynamic limit at low temperatures and low momentum. Our analysis is based on perturbation theory of the standard Liouvillean. We use two approaches: the first, motivated by the standard representation of operator algebras, examines resonances near zero; the second analyzes the 2-point correlation function in the energy-momentum space.

Low-Lying Energy Levels of a One-Dimensional Weakly Interacting Bose Gas under Zero Boundary Conditions

Maksim Tomchenko

We diagonalize the second-quantized Hamiltonian of a one-dimensional Bose gas with a non-point repulsive interatomic potential and zero boundary conditions. At a weak coupling, the solutions for the ground-state energy E0 and the dispersion law E(k) coincide with the Bogoliubov solutions for a periodic system. In this case, the single-particle density matrix F1(x, x′) at T = 0 is close to the solution for a periodic system and, at T > 0, is significantly different from it. We also obtain that the wave function ⟨w(x, t)⟩ of the effective condensate is close to a constant √︀N0/L inside the system and vanishes on the boundaries (here, N0 is the number of atoms in the effective condensate, and L is the size of the system). We find the criterion of applicability of the method, according to which the method works for a finite system at very low temperature and with a weak coupling (a weak interaction or a large concentration).

Beliaev Damping in Bose Gas

Jan Dereziński, Ben Li, Marcin Napiórkowski

Abstract According to the Bogoliubov theory the low energy behaviour of the Bose gas at zero temperature can be described by non-interacting bosonic quasiparticles called phonons. In this work the damping rate of phonons at low momenta, the so-called Beliaev damping, is explained and computed with simple arguments involving the Fermi Golden Rule and Bogoliubov’s quasiparticles.

Goldstone phonons in a Bose-condensed gas at finite temperature: One-loop approximation

Stephen H. Payne, Adam Griffin

Using a field-theoretic formalism in terms of regular (proper, irreducible) quantities, we give a detailed analysis of the long-wavelength collisionless excitations of a weakly interacting dilute Bose-condensed gas in the intermediate-temperature region. Earlier work by Sz\'epfalusy and Kondor has shown that use of the free-Bose-gas approximation for the regular quantities leads to a phonon with a velocity equal to [${n}_{0}$(T)${V}_{0}$/m${]}^{1/2}$, where ${n}_{0}$(T) is the temperature-dependent condensate of a free Bose gas. In this paper the phonon velocity is worked out with use of the one-loop diagrams for the regular quantities. The result is [${n}_{S}$(T)${V}_{0}$/m${]}^{1/2}$[1-f(T)], where ${n}_{S}$(T) is the Landau superfluid density defined in terms of the Bogoliubov excitations and f(T) is a relatively small correction. Numerical calculations are given for spin-polarized ${\mathrm{H}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}}$ with density n=5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{18}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{3}$. .AE

Ground State Energy of the Two-Dimensional Weakly Interacting Bose Gas: First Correction Beyond Bogoliubov Theory

Christophe Mora, Yvan Castin

We consider the grand potential Omega of a two-dimensional weakly interacting homogeneous Bose gas at zero temperature. Building on a number-conserving Bogoliubov method for a lattice model in the grand canonical ensemble, we calculate the next order term as compared to the Bogoliubov prediction, in a systematic expansion of Omega in powers of the parameter measuring the weakness of the interaction. Our prediction is in very good agreement with recent Monte Carlo calculations.

Condensate statistics and thermodynamics of weakly interacting Bose gas: Recursion relation approach

Konstantin E. Dorfman, M. Kim, Anatoly A. Svidzinsky

We study condensate statistics and thermodynamics of weakly interacting Bose gas with a fixed total number $N$ of particles in a cubic box. We find the exact recursion relation for the canonical ensemble partition function. Using this relation, we calculate the distribution function of condensate particles for $N=200$. We also calculate the distribution function based on multinomial expansion of the characteristic function. Similar to the ideal gas, both approaches give exact statistical moments for all temperatures in the framework of Bogoliubov model. We compare them with the results of unconstraint canonical ensemble quasiparticle formalism and the hybrid master equation approach. The present recursion relation can be used for any external potential and boundary conditions. We investigate the temperature dependence of the first few statistical moments of condensate fluctuations as well as thermodynamic potentials and heat capacity analytically and numerically in the whole temperature range.
