Abstract

We present a theory of phonon-assisted optical two-magnon absorption in two-leg spin ladders. Based on the strong intra-rung-coupling limit we show that collective excitations of total spin $S=0,1,$ and 2 exist outside of the two-magnon continuum. It is demonstrated that the singlet collective state has a clear signature in the optical spectrum.

Observation of Two-Magnon Bound States in the Two-Leg Ladders of (Ca,La)14Cu24O41

Phonon-assisted two-magnon absorption is studied in the spin- $1/2$ two-leg ladders of $(\mathrm{Ca},\mathrm{La}{)}_{14}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{24}{\mathrm{O}}_{41}$ for $E\ensuremath{\parallel}c$ (legs) and $E\ensuremath{\parallel}a$ (rungs). We verify the theoretically predicted existence of two-magnon singlet bound states, which give rise to peaks at $\ensuremath{\approx}2140$ and $2800{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. The two-magnon continuum is observed at $\ensuremath{\approx}4000{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. Two different theoretical approaches (Jordan-Wigner fermions and perturbation theory) describe the data very well for ${J}_{\ensuremath{\parallel}}\ensuremath{\approx}1020--1100{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, ${J}_{\ensuremath{\parallel}}{/J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}\ensuremath{\approx}1--1.2$. At high energies, the magnetic contribution to $\ensuremath{\sigma}(\ensuremath{\omega})$ is strikingly similar in the ladders and in the undoped high- ${T}_{c}$ cuprates, which emphasizes the importance of strong quantum fluctuations in the latter.

Quantum spin ladder with dynamic phonons: Bound states of magnons and phonons

Oleg P. Sushkov

We consider the two-chain Heisenberg ladder with antiferromagnetic interactions. Our approach is based on the description of spin excitations as triplets above a strong-coupling singlet ground state. It is shown that interaction with dynamic phonons drastically changes the dispersion of the elementary triplet excitation (magnon) and the spin structure factor. It is also shown that a different triplet excitation appears in the spectrum: the bound state of a magnon and a phonon.

Infrared Optical Absorption Spectra in Cuprate Two-Leg Spin-Ladder Systems with a Cyclic Four-Spin Interaction

Kensuke Inaba, Sei-ichiro Suga

On the basis of a resonating valence-bond description, we investigate the excitation spectrum caused by the Raman process in cuprate two-leg spin ladders with a cyclic four-spin interaction. Owing to a cyclic four-spin interaction, the S = 0 three-triplet excitation energy is reduced and becomes smaller than the S = 0 two-triplet excitation energy around the end of the Brillouin zone. Possible interpretations for the change in the lowest-lying mode are discussed. We show that such a change in the lowest-lying mode yields the shoulder structure at the lower edge in the phonon-assisted optical absorption spectrum.

One-magnon states and electron spin resonance in spin-ladders with singlet-rung ground statein a staggered magnetic field

P. N. Bibikov

One-magnon problem for spin-ladders with exact singlet-rung ground state in arbitrary oriented constant and staggered magnetic fields is studied. For two special configurations when the both fields are parallel or perpendicular to each other the exact formulas for eigenstates and eigenvectors are presented. In the parallel case the one-magnon contribution to the ESR absorption line shape is obtained. The latter is non-Lorentzian, has finite range and a gap around resonance. For low fields both the range of the spectrum and the width of the gap are controlled by the width of the one-magnon zone in zero magnetic field. Some other interactions usually contributing to the ESR line shape are also briefly discussed.

Bound States of Magnons in the S=1/2 Quantum Spin Ladder

Oleg P. Sushkov, Valeri N. Kotov

The excitation spectrum of the two-chain Heisenberg ladder with antiferromagnetic interactions is studied. Our approach is based on the description of the excitations as triplets above a strong-coupling singlet ground state. The quasiparticle spectrum is calculated by treating the excitations as a dilute Bose gas with infinite on-site repulsion. Additional singlet ( $S\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0$) and triplet ( $S\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1$) excitations are found as quasiparticle bound states. Thus it is demonstrated that the spectrum consists of one elementary triplet, one composite triplet, and one composite singlet.

Two-hole dynamics in spin ladders

Christoph Jurecka, Wolfram Brenig

We present an analytic theory for the energy spectrum of a two-leg spin ladder doped with two holes. Starting from a pseudo-fermion-bond-boson representation of the corresponding $t_{1,2}-J_{1,2}$ Hamiltonian we apply a diagrammatic approach adapted to the limit of strong rung coupling, which includes both, the coupling of holes to the spin background as well as the two-hole interactions. The two-hole spectrum is calculated and the formation of bound states is discussed. Additionally the evolution of the spin gap of the ladder upon doping is analyzed. A comparison with existing exact diagonalization data is presented and good agreement is found.
