Phase transitions between topologically distinct gapped phases in isotropic spin ladders

Abstract

We consider various two-leg ladder models exhibiting gapped phases. All of these phases have short-ranged valence bond ground states, and they all exhibit string order. However, we show that short-ranged valence bond ground states divide into two topologically distinct classes, and as a consequence, there exist two topologically distinct types of string order. Therefore, not all gapped phases belong to the same universality class. We show that phase transitions occur when we interpolate between models belonging to different topological classes, and we study the nature of these transitions.

String order in spin liquid phases of spin ladders

Gábor Fáth, Örs Legeza, Jenő Sólyom

Two-leg spin ladders have a rich phase diagram if rung, diagonal, and plaquette couplings are allowed for. Among the possible phases there are two Haldane-type spin liquid phases without local order parameter, which differ, however, in the topology of the short range valence bonds. We show that these phases can be distinguished numerically by two different string order parameters. We also point out that long-range string and dimer orders can coexist.

Phase diagram of the frustrated two-leg ladder model

Tigran Hakobyan, J. H. Hetherington, M. Röger

Using density-matrix renormalization group calculations, we investigate the general phase diagram of the frustrated two-leg ladder with Heisenberg interactions along legs, rungs, and diagonals. We confirm that all antiferromagnetic gapped states belong to the same universality class as the Haldane phase. In a three-dimensional phase diagram, we determine a continuous surface with singularities in the string-order parameter or its first derivative, corresponding to a transition between two Haldane phases with different topological order. Some parts of this transition surface are critical with zero gap and vanishing string-order parameter. In the complementary parts, the transition is first order with finite gap and string order. The boundary of this surface with the ferromagnetic region is a critical end line, when the surface is critical, and a triple line anywhere else. Part of this boundary coincides with the exactly soluble model proposed by Dmitriev, Krivnov, and Ovchinnikov [Phys. Rev. B 56, 5985 (1997)].

Topological phase transitions in spin-S ladders

Natalia Chepiga, Frédéric Michaud, Frédéric Mila

We show that spin-S ladders undergo, for antiferromagnetic rung coupling, a series of 4S topological phase transitions when the ratio of the leg to rung coupling changes from strongly antiferromagnetic to strongly ferromagnetic. These phase transitions are characterized by a change of Berry phase on the rungs, and, with appropriate boundary conditions, by the appearance and disappearance of edge states without the bulk gap ever closing. The various phases can be distinguished by the number of valence bond singlets on the rungs, which decreases from 2S for strong rung coupling to 0 for dominant leg coupling. In particular, the isotropic spin-3/2 ladder with equal leg and rung coupling is explicitly shown to be in the valence bond solid phase with one singlet per bond.

Phase Diagram of the Spin-\(\frac{1}{2}\) Bond-Alternating Two-Leg Ladder

Masaaki Nakamura, Takahiro Yamamoto, Kôichirô Ide

We study phase transition between two topologically different gapped states in the spin-1/2 bond-alternating two-leg Heisenberg ladder by investigating string order parameters and the level-crossing method based on the exact diagonalization. We determine the phase diagram on the plane of the bond-alternation δ and the rung-leg coupling ratio J ⊥ / J , and conclude that the boundary is given as J ⊥ / J ∝δ 2/3 in the weak coupling region J ⊥ / J , δ≪1.

Phase transitions and critical behaviors of XXZ ladders

Chengxiang Ding

Abstract We study the phase transitions and critical behaviors of the two-leg dimerized XXZ ladders by extensive Monte Carlo simulations and finite-size scaling analysis. For the Heisenberg model on the staggered ladder, we verify that the phase transition between the two topological phases belongs to the four-state Potts universality class; for the XY case ( ), the phase diagram is similar to the Heisenberg case, but the critical behavior belongs to a new universality class; for the Ising case ( ), we find three topological phases, in which one of them has both the topological orders and the local magnetic order; the two phase transitions associated with these phases also belong to the Ising universality class. On the columnar ladder, we have not found any phase transition for all the three cases. Furthermore, we find that the magnetic field can also induce phase transitions for both the staggered and columnar models, and the topological phases are in certain magnetic plateaux. For the staggered model, we study the phase transition associated with the plateau of zero magnetization; we find that the critical behavior of the string order parameter belongs to the 2D classical Ising model, and the scaling behavior of the uniform magnetization is different from the Dzhaparidze–Nersesyan–Pokrovsky–Talapov universality class. For the columnar model, we study the phase transition associated with the plateau whose magnetization is half of the saturation value, which has fractional quantized Berry phase; in this case, the conventional string order parameters are not applicable as order parameters, we determine the critical point of this phase transition by the scaling behavior of the uniform magnetization which is also different from the Dzhaparidze–Nersesyan–Pokrovsky–Talapov universality class.

Symmetry-protected topological phases and competing orders in a spin- 1 2 XXZ ladder with a four-spin interaction

Takuhiro Ogino, Shunsuke Furukawa, Ryui Kaneko +2 more

We study a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ model with a four-spin interaction on a two-leg ladder. By means of effective field theory and matrix product state calculations, we obtain rich ground-state phase diagrams that consist of eight distinct gapped phases. Four of them exhibit spontaneous symmetry breaking with either a magnetic or valence-bond-solid (VBS) long-range order. The other four are featureless, i.e., the bulk ground state is unique and does not break any symmetry. The featureless phases include the rung singlet (RS) and Haldane phases as well as their variants, the RS* and Haldane* phases, in which twisted singlet pairs $(|\ensuremath{\uparrow}\ensuremath{\downarrow}\ensuremath{\rangle}+|\ensuremath{\downarrow}\ensuremath{\uparrow}\ensuremath{\rangle})/\sqrt{2}$ are formed between the two legs. We argue and demonstrate that Gaussian transitions with the central charge $c=1$ occur between the featureless phases and between the ordered phases while Ising transitions with $c=1/2$ occur between the featureless and ordered phases. The two types of transition lines cross at the $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-symmetric point, where the criticality is described by the $\mathrm{SU}{(2)}_{2}$ Wess-Zumino-Witten theory with $c=3/2$. The RS-Haldane* and RS*-Haldane transitions give examples of topological phase transitions. Interestingly, the RS* and Haldane* phases, which have highly anisotropic nature, appear even in the vicinity of the isotropic case. We demonstrate that all the four featureless phases are distinguished by topological indices in the presence of certain symmetries.
