Abstract

We study a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ model with a four-spin interaction on a two-leg ladder. By means of effective field theory and matrix product state calculations, we obtain rich ground-state phase diagrams that consist of eight distinct gapped phases. Four of them exhibit spontaneous symmetry breaking with either a magnetic or valence-bond-solid (VBS) long-range order. The other four are featureless, i.e., the bulk ground state is unique and does not break any symmetry. The featureless phases include the rung singlet (RS) and Haldane phases as well as their variants, the RS* and Haldane* phases, in which twisted singlet pairs $(|\ensuremath{\uparrow}\ensuremath{\downarrow}\ensuremath{\rangle}+|\ensuremath{\downarrow}\ensuremath{\uparrow}\ensuremath{\rangle})/\sqrt{2}$ are formed between the two legs. We argue and demonstrate that Gaussian transitions with the central charge $c=1$ occur between the featureless phases and between the ordered phases while Ising transitions with $c=1/2$ occur between the featureless and ordered phases. The two types of transition lines cross at the $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-symmetric point, where the criticality is described by the $\mathrm{SU}{(2)}_{2}$ Wess-Zumino-Witten theory with $c=3/2$. The RS-Haldane* and RS*-Haldane transitions give examples of topological phase transitions. Interestingly, the RS* and Haldane* phases, which have highly anisotropic nature, appear even in the vicinity of the isotropic case. We demonstrate that all the four featureless phases are distinguished by topological indices in the presence of certain symmetries.

Ground-state phase diagram of a spin- 1 2 frustrated XXZ ladder

Takuhiro Ogino, Ryui Kaneko, Satoshi Morita +1 more

We study the ground-state phase diagram of a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ frustrated XXZ ladder, in which two antiferromagnetic chains are coupled by competing rung and diagonal interactions, ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ and ${J}_{\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}}$. Previous studies on the isotropic model have revealed that a fluctuation-induced effective dimer attraction between the legs stabilizes the columnar dimer (CD) phase in the highly frustrated regime ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}\ensuremath{\approx}2{J}_{\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}}$, especially for ferromagnetic ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp},\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}}<0$. By means of effective field theory and numerical analyses, we extend this analysis to the XXZ model, and we obtain a rich phase diagram. The diagram includes four gapped featureless phases with no symmetry breaking: the rung singlet (RS) and Haldane phases as well as their twisted variants, the RS* and Haldane* phases, which are all distinct in the presence of certain symmetries. Significantly, the Haldane-CD transition point in the isotropic model turns out to be a crossing point of two transition lines in the XXZ model, and the stripe N\'eel and RS* phases appear between these lines. This indicates a nontrivial interplay between the effective dimer attraction and the exchange anisotropy. In the easy-plane regime, the four featureless phases and two critical phases are found to compete in a complex manner depending on the signs of ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp},\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}}$.

Symmetry, topology, duality, chirality, and criticality in a spin- 12 XXZ ladder with a four-spin interaction

Matéo Fontaine, K. Sugimoto, Shunsuke Furukawa

We study the ground-state phase diagram of a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ model with a chirality-chirality interaction (CCI) on a two-leg ladder. This model offers a minimal setup to study an interplay between spin and chirality degrees of freedom. The spin-chirality duality transformation allows us to relate the regimes of weak and strong CCIs. By applying the Abelian bosonization and the duality, we obtain a rich phase diagram that contains distinct gapped featureless and ordered phases. In particular, N\'eel and vector chiral orders appear for easy-axis anisotropy, while two distinct symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases appear for easy-plane anisotropy. The two SPT phases can be viewed as twisted variants of the Haldane phase. We also present an effective description in terms of (spinor) hard-core bosons, which reveals critical behavior on the self-dual line in the easy-axis and easy-plane regimes. We perform numerical simulations to confirm the predicted phase structure and critical properties. We further demonstrate that the two SPT phases and a trivial phase are distinguished by topological indices in the presence of certain symmetries. A similar phase structure is expected in a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ ladder with four-spin ring exchange.

Ground-state phase diagram of the frustrated spin- 12 two-leg honeycomb ladder

Qiang Luo, Shijie Hu, Jize Zhao +3 more

We investigate a spin-$1/2$ two-leg honeycomb ladder with frustrating next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) coupling along the legs, which is equivalent to two ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ spin chains coupled with ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ at odd rungs. The full parameter region of the model is systematically studied using conventional and infinite density-matrix renormalization group as well as bosonization. The rich phase diagram consists of five distinct phases: a Haldane phase, a NNN-Haldane phase, and a staggered dimer phase when ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}<0$; a rung singlet phase and a columnar dimer phase when ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}>0$. An interesting reentrant behavior from the dimerized phase into the Haldane phase is found as the frustration ${J}_{2}$ increases. The universalities of the critical phase transitions are fully analyzed. Phase transitions between dimerized and disordered phases belong to the two-dimensional Ising class with a central charge $c=1/2$. The transition from the Haldane phase to NNN-Haldane phase is of a weak topological first order, while the continuous transition between the Haldane phase and rung singlet phase has a central charge $c=2$.

Entanglement-entropy analysis of critical and topological quantum phases in a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder

Azadeh Ghannadan, Hana Vargová, Jozef Genzor +2 more

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder in the transverse magnetic field with an anisotropic inter-rung exchange coupling $α$. This bond-anisotropic parameter continuously interpolates among the Ising-like limit $α=0$, the isotropic point $α=1$, and the XY-dominated regime $α\gg 1$. Using density-matrix renormalization group calculations within a matrix-product-state framework, we analyze bipartite entanglement, magnetization, and spin correlations to characterize the emergent quantum phases. We identify six distinct ground-state phases, including rung-singlet, Haldane-like, Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, canted Ising-ordered, XY-polarized, and ordered ferromagnetic states. While magnetization and local correlations provide a first insight into phase classifications, the finite-size scaling of the entanglement measures offers a more sensitive and unified diagnostics of both gapped and gapless regimes. In the gapless regime, we extract the central charge $c \simeq 1$, confirming Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid behavior, while at the transition between the canted Ising and ferromagnetic phases, we observe $c \simeq 1/2$, consistent with the Ising universality. Finally, we find that both the Haldane-like behavior and the extended critical Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid regime are strongly confined to the vicinity of the isotropic point $α= 1$.

Ground state phase diagram of an S = 1 2 two-leg Heisenberg spin ladder system with negative four-spin interaction

Keigo Hijii, Tôru Sakai

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram and critical properties of the $S=1/2$ two-leg Heisenberg spin ladder system with a negative four-spin interaction using a numerical exact diagonalization method. Using the perturbation theory in the strong negative rung-coupling limit, we derive an $S=1$ bilinear-biquadratic chain as an effective model. We discuss the ground-state phase diagram in this limit. Next we numerically determine a phase boundary between the rung singlet phase and the columnar dimer (CD) phase by the phenomenological renormalization group method, and one between the CD phase and the Haldane phase by the twisted boundary condition method. We confirm that the phase transition between the CD phase and the Haldane phase is of second order and this universality class is described by the $k=2$ $SU(2)$ Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten nonlinear $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ model, calculating the central charge and scaling dimensions.

Phase diagram of S=12 two-leg XXZ spin-ladder systems

Keigo Hijii, Atsuhiro Kitazawa, K. Nomura

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the $\mathrm{S}=\frac{1}{2}$ two-leg $XXZ$ spin-ladder system with an isotropic interchain coupling. In this model, there is the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition which occurs at the $XY$-Haldane and $XY$-rung singlet phase boundaries. It was difficult to determine the transition line using traditional methods. We overcome this difficulty using the level spectroscopy method combined with the twisted boundary condition method, and we check the consistency. We find out that the phase boundary between $XY$ phase and Haldane phase lies on $\ensuremath{\Delta}=0$ line. And we show that there exist two different $XY$ phases, which we can distinguish investigating a $XX$ correlation function.
