Abstract

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder in the transverse magnetic field with an anisotropic inter-rung exchange coupling $α$. This bond-anisotropic parameter continuously interpolates among the Ising-like limit $α=0$, the isotropic point $α=1$, and the XY-dominated regime $α\gg 1$. Using density-matrix renormalization group calculations within a matrix-product-state framework, we analyze bipartite entanglement, magnetization, and spin correlations to characterize the emergent quantum phases. We identify six distinct ground-state phases, including rung-singlet, Haldane-like, Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, canted Ising-ordered, XY-polarized, and ordered ferromagnetic states. While magnetization and local correlations provide a first insight into phase classifications, the finite-size scaling of the entanglement measures offers a more sensitive and unified diagnostics of both gapped and gapless regimes. In the gapless regime, we extract the central charge $c \simeq 1$, confirming Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid behavior, while at the transition between the canted Ising and ferromagnetic phases, we observe $c \simeq 1/2$, consistent with the Ising universality. Finally, we find that both the Haldane-like behavior and the extended critical Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid regime are strongly confined to the vicinity of the isotropic point $α= 1$.

Quantum bicritical point and phase separation in a frustrated Heisenberg ladder

D. S. Almeida, R. R. Montenegro-Filho

We use the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and a hard-core boson map to investigate the quantum phase transitions present in the phase diagram of the frustrated Heisenberg ladder in a magnetic field. The quantum bicritical point is observed at the end of a first-order transition line, which is at the meeting of the two second-order transition lines that bound the fully polarized plateau. The characterization of the bicritical point was made using a hard-core boson mapping of the low-energy excitations from the fully polarized phase and through DMRG by studying the probability density of finding the rung spins in a singlet or a triplet state with zero spin component along the magnetic field. In particular, we give conditions for the exchange couplings for the presence of the first-order transition line and the bicritical point in the phase diagram. Moreover, we unveil the phase-separated states for magnetization values inside the magnetization jump and, in particular, the dependence on the system size of the energy curve as a function of magnetization. Finite-size scaling analysis of the transverse spin correlation functions has been used to estimate the critical points of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions from the fractional magnetization plateau $m=1/2$ to the respective gapless Luttinger liquid phases for some sets of parameters.

Magnetic phase diagram of the spin- 12 antiferromagnetic zigzag ladder

Toshiya Hikihara, Tsutomu Momoi, Akira Furusaki +1 more

We study the one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor ${J}_{1}$ and next-nearest-neighbor ${J}_{2}$ exchange couplings in magnetic field $h$. With varying dimensionless parameters ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}$ and $h/{J}_{1}$, the ground state of the model exhibits several phases including three gapped phases (dimer, 1/3-magnetization plateau, and fully polarized phases) and four types of gapless Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) phases which we dub TLL1, TLL2, spin-density-wave $({\text{SDW}}_{2})$, and vector chiral phases. From extensive numerical calculations using the density-matrix renormalization-group method, we investigate various (multiple-)spin-correlation functions in detail and determine dominant and subleading correlations in each phase. For the one-component TLLs, i.e., the TLL1, ${\text{SDW}}_{2}$, and vector chiral phases, we fit the numerically obtained correlation functions to those calculated from effective low-energy theories of TLLs and find good agreement between them. The low-energy theory for each critical TLL phase is thus identified, together with TLL parameters which control the exponents of power-law decaying correlation functions. For the TLL2 phase, we develop an effective low-energy theory of two-component TLL consisting of two free bosons (central charge $c=1+1$), which explains numerical results of entanglement entropy and Friedel oscillations of local magnetization. Implications of our results to possible magnetic phase transitions in real quasi-one-dimensional compounds are also discussed.

Ground-State Phase Diagram of an Anisotropic S = 1/2 Ladder with Different Leg Interactions

Takashi Tonegawa, Toshiya Hikihara, Kiyomi Okamoto +2 more

We explore the ground-state phase diagram of the $S=1/2$ two-leg ladder with different leg interactions. The $xy$ and $z$ components of the leg interactions between nearest-neighbor spins in the $a$ ($b$) leg are respectively denoted by $J_{{\rm l},a}$ and $Δ_{\rm l} J_{{\rm l},a}$ ($J_{{\rm l},b}$ and $Δ_{\rm l} J_{{\rm l},b}$). On the other hand, the $xy$ and $z$ components of the uniform rung interactions are respectively denoted by $Γ_{\rm r} J_{\rm r}$ and $J_{\rm r}$. In the above, $Δ_{\rm l}$ and $Γ_{\rm r}$ are the $XXZ$-type anisotropy parameters for the leg and rung interactions, respectively. This system has a frustration when $J_{{\rm l},a} J_{{\rm l},b}<0$ irrespective of the sign of $J_{\rm r}$. The phase diagram on the $Δ_{\rm l}$ ($|Δ_{\rm l}| \leq 1.0$) versus $J_{{\rm l},b}$ ($-2.0\leq J_{{\rm l},b}\leq 3.0$) plane in the case where $J_{{\rm l},a}=0.2$, $J_{\rm r}=-1.0$, and $Γ_{\rm r} = 0.5$ is determined numerically. We employ the physical consideration, and the level spectroscopy and phenomenological renormalization-group analyses of the numerical date obtained by the exact diagonalization method. The resultant phase diagram contains the ferromagnetic, Haldane, N{é}el, nematic Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL), partial ferrimagnetic, and $XY1$ phases. Interestingly enough, the nematic TLL phase appears in the strong-rung unfrustrated region as well as in the strong-rung frustrated one. We perform the first-order perturbational calculations from the strong rung coupling limit to elucidate the characteristic features of the phase diagram. Furthermore, we make the density-matrix renormalization-group calculations for some physical quantities such as the energy gaps, the local magnetization, and the spin correlation functions to supplement the reliability of the phase diagram.

Gapless symmetry-protected topological phase of quantum antiferromagnets on anisotropic triangular strip

Yuichiro Hidaka, Shunsuke C. Furuya, Atsushi Ueda +1 more

We study a three-leg spin-1/2 ladder with geometrically frustrated interleg interactions. We call this model an anisotropic triangular-strip (ATS) model. We numerically and field-theoretically show that its ground state belongs to a gapless symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase. The numerical approach is based on density-matrix renormalization group analyses of the entanglement entropy and the entanglement spectrum. Whereas the entanglement entropy exhibits a critical behavior, the entanglement spectrum is nontrivially degenerate. These entanglement properties imply that the ground state is a gapless topological phase. We investigate the ATS model using a quantum field theory to support the numerical findings. When the frustrated interchain interaction is deemed a perturbation acting on the three spin chains, the frustrated interchain interaction almost isolates the second chain from the other two chains. However, at the same time, the second chain mediates a ferromagnetic interaction between the first and third chains. Therefore, the ground state of the ATS model is a gapless Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid weakly coupled to a spin-1 Haldane chain with irrelevant interactions. Last but not least, we show that the gapless SPT phase of the ATS model is a symmetry-protected critical phase. We point out that the symmetry protection of criticality is essential in characterization of the gapless SPT phase.

Ground-state phase diagram of the frustrated spin- 12 two-leg honeycomb ladder

Qiang Luo, Shijie Hu, Jize Zhao +3 more

We investigate a spin-$1/2$ two-leg honeycomb ladder with frustrating next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) coupling along the legs, which is equivalent to two ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ spin chains coupled with ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ at odd rungs. The full parameter region of the model is systematically studied using conventional and infinite density-matrix renormalization group as well as bosonization. The rich phase diagram consists of five distinct phases: a Haldane phase, a NNN-Haldane phase, and a staggered dimer phase when ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}<0$; a rung singlet phase and a columnar dimer phase when ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}>0$. An interesting reentrant behavior from the dimerized phase into the Haldane phase is found as the frustration ${J}_{2}$ increases. The universalities of the critical phase transitions are fully analyzed. Phase transitions between dimerized and disordered phases belong to the two-dimensional Ising class with a central charge $c=1/2$. The transition from the Haldane phase to NNN-Haldane phase is of a weak topological first order, while the continuous transition between the Haldane phase and rung singlet phase has a central charge $c=2$.

Quantum phases and thermodynamics of a frustrated spin-1/2 ladder with alternate Ising–Heisenberg rung interactions

Sk Saniur Rahaman, Shaon Sahoo, Manoranjan Kumar

Abstract We study a frustrated two-leg spin ladder with alternate isotropic Heisenberg and Ising rung exchange interactions, whereas, interactions along legs and diagonals are Ising-type. All the interactions in the ladder are anti-ferromagnetic in nature and induce frustration in the system. This model shows four interesting quantum phases: (i) stripe rung ferromagnetic (SRFM), (ii) stripe rung ferromagnetic with edge singlet (SRFM-E), (iii) anisotropic antiferromagnetic (AAFM), and (iv) stripe leg ferromagnetic (SLFM) phase. We construct a quantum phase diagram for this model and show that in stripe rung ferromagnet (SRFM), the same type of sublattice spins (either isotropic S -type or discrete anisotropic σ -type spins) are aligned in the same direction. Whereas, in anisotropic antiferromagnetic phase, both S and σ -type of spins are anti-ferromagnetically aligned with each other, two nearest S spins along the rung form an anisotropic singlet bond whereas two nearest σ spins form an Ising bond. In large Heisenberg rung exchange interaction limit, spins on each leg are ferromagnetically aligned, but spins on different legs are anti-ferromagnetically aligned. The thermodynamic quantities like specific heat C v ( T ), magnetic susceptibility χ ( T ) and thermal entropy S ( T ) are also calculated using the transfer matrix method for various phases. The magnetic gap in the SRFM and the SLFM can be noticed from χ ( T ) and C v ( T ) curves.
