Anyonic Molecules in Atomic Fractional Quantum Hall Liquids: A Quantitative Probe of Fractional Charge and Anyonic Statistics

A. Muñoz de las Heras, E. Macaluso, Iacopo Carusotto

We study the quantum dynamics of massive impurities embedded in a strongly interacting two-dimensional atomic gas driven into the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) regime under the effect of a synthetic magnetic field. For suitable values of the atom-impurity interaction strength, each impurity can capture one or more quasi-hole excitations of the FQH liquid, forming a bound molecular state with novel physical properties. An effective Hamiltonian for such anyonic molecules is derived within the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, which provides renormalized values for their effective mass, charge and statistics by combining the finite mass of the impurity with the fractional charge and statistics of the quasi-holes. The renormalized mass and charge of a single molecule can be extracted from the cyclotron orbit that it describes as a free particle in a magnetic field. The anyonic statistics introduces a statistical phase between the direct and exchange scattering channels of a pair of indistinguishable colliding molecules, and can be measured from the angular position of the interference fringes in the differential scattering cross section. Implementations of such schemes beyond cold atomic gases are highlighted, in particular in photonic systems.

Form factors for quasi-particles inc= 1 conformal field theory

Ronald A. J. van Elburg, Kareljan Schoutens

The non-Fermi liquid physics at the edge of fractional quantum Hall systems is described by specific chiral conformal field theories with central charge c = 1. The charged quasi-particles in these theories have fractional charge and obey a form of fractional statistics. In this paper we study form factors, which are matrix elements of physical (conformal) operators, evaluated in a quasi-particle basis that is organized according to the rules of fractional exclusion statistics. Using the systematics of Jack polynomials, we derive selection rules for a special class of form factors. We argue that finite-temperature Green functions can be evaluated via systematic form factor expansions, using form factors such as those computed in this paper and thermodynamic distribution functions for fractional exclusion statistics. We present a specific case study where we demonstrate that the form factor expansion shows a rapid convergence.

Fractional quantum Hall effect at zero magnetic field

Abolhassan Vaezi

In this letter, we discuss the recently proposed fractional quantum Hall effect in the absence of Landau levels. It is shown that the parton construction can explain all properties of 1/3 state, including the effective charge of quasi-particles, their statistics and the many-body ground-state degeneracy. The low energy description of these states has been discussed. We also generalize our model to construct the hierarchical quantum Hall states at filling fractions other than $1/m$.
