The excitation spectrum of specific conformal field theories (CFT) with central charge c = 1 can be described in terms of quasi-particles with charges Q = − p , +1 and fractional statistics properties. Using the language of Jack polynomials, we compute form factors of the charge density operator in these CFTs. We study a form-factor expansion for the finite-temperature density–density correlation function, and find that it shows a quick convergence to the exact result. The low-temperature behaviour is recovered from a form factor with p + 1 particles, while the high-temperature limit is recovered from states containing no more than three particles.
The subject of this work is the application of conformal field theory in the fractional quantum Hall effect. The fractional quantum Hall effect is observed in a two-dimensional electron gas in a strong perpendicular magnetic field and at low temperature. The electron system forms a strongly correlated quantum liquid and exhibits the exact quantization of the Hall conductivity in to a fractional value vet/h, where v is the fractional filling fraction of Landau-levels in the system. In addition, the elementary excitations of the electron fluid have fractional charge and fractional statistics of anyons. First, we review the basic of two-dimensional conformal field theory and show how certain conformal quantum field theories can be solved non-perturbatively by using the representation theory of conformal symmetries. The low-energy effective field theory in the bulk of a fractional quantum Hall state is known to be a 2+1 dimensional topological field theory. The states of the topological quantum field theory are directly connected to the holomorphic correlation functions of an equivalent two-dimensional conformal field theory. It is known that the gapless excitations at the boundary of the quantum Hall state are described by the same conformal field theory. By using this connection, the so-called Laughlin and Moore-Read states are derived in detail using conformal field theory. The fractional charge and statistics of the quasiparticle excitations in these states are obtained from the conformal field theory description. Furthermore, the non-Abelian statistics of the Moore-Read states are verified explicitly from the quasiparticle wave functions. We argue how the different fractional quantum Hall phases of matter are described by the quantum numbers obtained using conformal field theory. Lastly, we study model interactions that have the Laughlin v = 1/3 and the Moore-Read v = 1/2 states as exact ground states. We compute the matrix elements of these interactions and diagonalize the Hamiltonian matrix in the disk geometry for both states. The low-energy edge excitations of these states are studied in the finite geometry and we verify that they are in accordance with the conformal field theory on the boundary. By creating a localized density disturbance in the system, we create the e/4 quasiparticle of the Moore-Read state, and by studying the properties of the edge theory it is seen that quasiparticle has the same properties as the non-Abelian quasihole in the conformal field theory. The obtained results verify the correspondence between the bulk state and the boundary conformal field theory at the edge in the fractional quantum Hall states in question.
We propose a new method for investigating the exclusion statistics of quasiparticles in conformal field theory (CFT) spectra. The method leads to one-particle distribution functions, which generalize the Fermi-Dirac distribution. For the simplest
SU(n) invariant CFTs we find a generalization of Gentile parafermions, and we obtain new distributions for the simplest
ZN-invariant CFTs. In special examples, our approach reproduces distributions based on ``fractional exclusion statistics'' in the sense of Haldane. We comment on applications to fractional quantum Hall effect edge theories.
We show that all lowest Landau-level projected and unprojected chiral parton type fractional quantum Hall ground and edge-state trial wave functions, which take the form of products of integer quantum Hall wave functions, can be expressed as conformal field theory (CFT) correlation functions, where we can associate a chiral algebra to each parton state such that the CFT defined by the algebra is the “smallest” such CFT that can generate the corresponding ground and edge-state trial wave functions (assuming that the corresponding chiral algebra does indeed define a physically “sensible” CFT). A field-theoretic generalization of Laughlin's plasma analogy, known as generalized screening, is formulated for these states. If this holds, along with an additional assumption, we argue that the inner products of edge-state trial wave functions, for parton states where the “densest” trial wave function is unique, can be expressed as matrix elements of an exponentiated local action operator of the CFT, generalizing the result of Dubail [], which implies the equality between edge-state and entanglement level counting to state counting in the corresponding CFT. We numerically test this result in the case of the unprojected ν=2/5 composite fermion state and the bosonic ν=1ϕ22 parton state. We discuss how Read's arguments [] still apply, implying that conformal blocks of the CFT defined by the corresponding chiral algebra are valid quasihole trial wave functions, with the adiabatic braiding statistics given by the monodromy of these functions, assuming the existence of a quasiparticle trapping Hamiltonian. Generalizations of these constructions are discussed, with particular attention given to simple current constructions. It is shown that all chiral composite fermion wave functions can be expressed as CFT correlation functions without explicit symmetrization or antisymmetrization and that the ground, edge, and certain quasihole trial wave functions of the ϕnm parton states can be expressed as the conformal blocks of the U(1)⊗SU(n)m WZW models. Finally, we discuss the relation of the ϕ2k series with the Read-Rezayi series, where several examples of quasihole braiding statistics calculations are given. The quantum Hall effect is one of the most challenging problems in condensed matter physics in which many rare physical phenomena like fractional charges and generally the fractional statistics are involved. In the integer quantum Hall effect the role of the disorder is more than others. The important point in describing these systems is that their bulk states should be gapful and in this sense the system should be incompressible. For describing the electron condensates in an arbitrary filling fraction with the odd denominator one needs the topological U(1) Chern-Simons effective field theory. Our motivation for using these field theories is the emergence of quantized conductivity. This effective field theory also has the ability of constructing the hierarchical fractional condensates with various filling factors. The excitations of these theories have fractional statistics which are investigated in this review. The non-Abelian Chern-Simons for quantum Hall systems will be also investigated. The interesting point is that the edge states of these systems are gapless and their excitations are equipped with the Kac-Moody algebra. The connection to the conformal field theories can be established using this point. The investigation of this correspondence is one of the aims of the present thesis. The connection to the logarithmic conformal field theories (e.g. for the Haldane-Rezaei wave function) is also reported in some works which will be addressed in this thesis.
It is known that a subset of fractional quantum Hall wave functions has been expressed as conformal field theory (CFT) correlators, notably the Laughlin wave function [Phys. Rev. Lett. 50, 1395 (1983)] at filling factor $\ensuremath{\nu}=1∕m$ (
m odd) and its quasiholes, and the Pfaffian wave function at $\ensuremath{\nu}=1∕2$ and its quasiholes. We develop a general scheme for constructing composite-fermion (CF) wave functions from conformal field theory. Quasiparticles at $\ensuremath{\nu}=1∕m$ are created by inserting anyonic vertex operators,
P1∕m(z), that replace a subset of the electron operators in the correlator. The one-quasiparticle wave function is identical to the corresponding CF wave function, and the two-quasiparticle wave function has correct fractional charge and statistics and is numerically almost identical to the corresponding CF wave function. We further show how to exactly represent the CF wave functions in the Jain series $\ensuremath{\nu}=s∕(2sp+1)$ [Phys. Rev. Lett. 63, 199 (1989); Composite Fermions (Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2007)] as the CFT correlators of a new type of fermionic vertex operators,
Vp,n(z), constructed from
n free compactified bosons; these operators provide the CFT representation of composite fermions carrying
2p flux quanta in the
nth CF Landau level. We also construct the corresponding quasiparticle and quasihole operators and argue that they have the expected fractional charge and statistics. For filling fractions
2∕5 and
3∕7, we show that the chiral CFTs that describe the bulk wave functions are identical to those given by Wen's general classification [Int. J. Mod. Phys. B 6, 1711 (1992); Adv. Phys. 44, 405 (1995)] of quantum Hall states in terms of
K matrices and
l and
t vectors, and we propose that to be generally true. Our results suggest a general procedure for constructing quasiparticle wave functions for other fractional Hall states, as well as for constructing ground states at filling fractions not contained in the principal Jain series.
