Critical and off-critical studies of the Baxter-Wu model with general toroidal boundary conditions

Abstract

The operator content of the Baxter-Wu model with general toroidal boundary conditions is calculated analytically and numerically. These calculations were done by relating the partition function of the model with the generating function of a site-colouring problem in a hexagonal lattice. Extending the original Bethe-ansatz solution of the related colouring problem we are able to calculate the eigenspectra of both models by solving the associated Bethe-ansatz equations. We have also calculated, by exploring the conformal invariance at the critical point, the mass ratios of the underlying massive theory governing the Baxter-Wu model in the vicinity of its critical point.

Conformal invariance studies of the Baxter-Wu model and a related site-colouring problem

F. C. Alcaraz, J. C. Xavier, São Carlos

The partition function of the Baxter-Wu model is exactly related to the generating function of a site-colouring problem on a hexagonal lattice. We extend the original Bethe ansatz solution of these models in order to obtain the eigenspectra of their transfer matrices in finite geometries and general toroidal boundary conditions. The operator content of these models are studied by solving numerically the Betheansatz equations and by exploring conformal invariance. Since the eigenspectra are calculated for large lattices, the corrections to finitesize scaling are also calculated.

Exact solution of the critical Ising model with special toroidal boundary conditions

Armen R. Poghosyan, N. Sh. Izmailian, Ralph Kenna B

The Ising model in two dimensions with special toroidal boundary conditions is analyzed. These boundary conditions, which we call duality-twisted boundary conditions, may be interpreted as inserting a specific defect line ("seam") in the system, along noncontractible circles of the cylinder, before closing it into a torus. We derive exact expressions for the eigenvalues of a transfer matrix for the critical ferromagnetic Ising model on the M×N square lattice wrapped on the torus with a specific defect line. As a result we have obtained analytically the partition function for the Ising model with such boundary conditions. In the case of infinitely long cylinders of circumference L with duality-twisted boundary conditions we obtain the asymptotic expansion of the free energy and the inverse correlation lengths. We find that the ratio of subdominant finite-size correction terms in the asymptotic expansion of the free energy and the inverse correlation lengths should be universal. We verify such universal behavior in the framework of a perturbating conformal approach by calculating the universal structure constant C_{n1n} for descendent states generated by the operator product expansion of the primary fields. For such states the calculations of an universal structure constants is a difficult task, since it involves knowledge of the four-point correlation function, which in general is not fixed by conformal invariance except for some particular cases, including the Ising model.

The critical boundary RSOS M(3,5) model

Omar El Deeb

We consider the critical nonunitary minimal model M (3, 5) with integrable boundaries and analyze the patterns of zeros of the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix and then determine the spectrum of the critical theory using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz ( TBA ) equations. Solving the TBA functional equation satisfied by the transfer matrices of the associated A 4 restricted solid-on-solid Forrester–Baxter lattice model in regime III in the continuum scaling limit, we derive the integral TBA equations for all excitations in the ( r , s ) = (1, 1) sector and then determine their corresponding energies. We classify the excitations in terms of ( m , n ) systems .

Finite lattice methods in statistical mechanics

Murray T. Batchelor

This thesis is concerned with the finite lattice study of spin models. The underlying theme in Parts I and II is the exploitation of Bethe ansatz equations to provide finite lattice data well beyond the range normally available. In Part I the Bethe ansatz equations for eigenvalues of the eight-vertex model are solved numerically to yield mass gap data on infinitely long strips of up to 512 sites in width. The finite-size corrections, at criticality, to the free energy per site and polarization gap are found to agree with recent studies of the XXZ spin chain. The leading corrections to the finite-size scaling estimates of the critical line and thermal exponent are also found, providing an explanation of the poor convergence seen in earlier studies. Away from criticality, the linear scaling fields are derived exactly in the full parameter space of the spin system, allowing a thorough test of a recently proposed method of extracting linear scaling fields and related exponents from finite lattice data. In Part II, the numerical solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations for the eigen-energies of the XXZ Hamiltonian on very large chains are used to identify, via conformal invariance, the scaling dimensions of various two-dimensional models. With periodic boundary conditions, eight-vertex and Gaussian model operators are found. The scaling dimensions of the Ashkm-Teller and Potts models are obtained by the exact relating of eigenstates of their quantum Hamiltonians to those of the XXZ chain with modified boundary conditions. Eigenstates of the Ashkin-Teller and Potts models with free boundaries are also obtained, allowing an examination of their critical surface properties. In Part HI the critical behaviour of an Ising model with competing firstand third- nearest neighbour interactions on the square lattice is investigated using the finite lattice method. In the ferromagnetic region, the phase boundary is located with an accuracy at least equal to that of alternative methods. In the antiphase region, distinctive structure in the finite lattice estimators is found over an extended temperature range. However, the nature of the transition remains unclear.

Critical site percolation on the triangular lattice: from integrability to conformal partition functions

Alexi Morin-Duchesne, Andreas Klümper, Paul A. Pearce

Abstract Critical site percolation on the triangular lattice is described by the Yang–Baxter solvable dilute A 2 ( 2 ) loop model with crossing parameter specialized to λ = π 3 , corresponding to the contractible loop fugacity β = − 2 cos 4 λ = 1 . We study the functional relations satisfied by the commuting transfer matrices of this model and the associated Bethe ansatz equations. The single and double row transfer matrices are respectively endowed with strip and periodic boundary conditions, and are elements of the ordinary and periodic dilute Temperley–Lieb algebras. The standard modules for these algebras are labelled by the number of defects d and, in the latter case, also by the twist e i γ . Nonlinear integral equation techniques are used to analytically solve the Bethe ansatz functional equations in the scaling limit for the central charge c = 0 and conformal weights Δ , Δ ˉ . For the ground states, we find Δ = Δ 1 , d + 1 for strip boundary conditions and ( Δ , Δ ˉ ) = ( Δ γ / π , d / 2 , Δ γ / π , − d / 2 ) for periodic boundary conditions, where Δ r , s = 1 24 ( ( 3 r − 2 s ) 2 − 1 ) . We give explicit conjectures for the scaling limit of the trace of the transfer matrix in each standard module. For d ⩽ 8 , these conjectures are supported by numerical solutions of the logarithmic form of the Bethe ansatz equations for the leading 20 or more c
