Abstract

We investigate the influence of biquadratic exchange interactions on the low-lying excitations of a $S=\frac{1}{2}$ ladder using perturbation theory, numerical diagonalization of finite systems, and exact results for ladders with matrix product ground states. We consider in particular the combination of biquadratic exchange interactions corresponding to ring exchange on the basic ladder plaquette. We find that a moderate amount of ring exchange reduces the spin gap substantially and makes equal bilinear exchange on legs and rungs consistent with experimentally observed spectra.

Bond-impurity-induced bound states in disordered spin- 12 ladders

Marcelo Arlego, W. Brenig, D. C. Cabra +3 more

We discuss the effect of weak bond disorder in two-leg spin ladders on the dispersion relation of the elementary triplet excitations with a particular focus on the appearance of bound states in the spin gap. Both the cases of modified exchange couplings on the rungs and the legs of the ladder are analyzed. Based on a projection on the single-triplet subspace, the single-impurity and small cluster problems are treated analytically in the strong-coupling limit. Numerically, we study the problem of a single impurity in a spin ladder by exact diagonalization to obtain the low-lying excitations. At finite concentrations and to leading order in the inter-rung coupling, we compare the spectra obtained from numerical diagonalization of large systems within the single-triplet subspace with the results of diagrammatic techniques, namely, low-concentration and coherent-potential approximations. The contribution of small impurity clusters to the density of states is also discussed.

Doped two-leg ladder with ring exchange: Exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group computations

Guillaume Roux, Steven R. White, Sylvain Capponi +2 more

The effect of a ring exchange on doped two-leg ladders is investigated combining exact diagonalization (ED) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) computations. We focus on the nature and weights of the low-energy magnetic excitations and on superconducting pairing. The stability with respect to this cyclic term of a remarkable resonant mode originating from a hole pair-magnon bound state is examined. We also find that, near the zero-doping critical point separating rung-singlet and dimerized phases, doping reopens a spin gap.

Phase diagram of the Heisenberg spin ladder with ring exchange

Vladimir Gritsev, Bruce Normand, D. Baeriswyl

We investigate the phase diagram of a generalized spin-1/2 quantum antiferromagnet on a ladder with rung, leg, diagonal, and ring-exchange interactions. We consider the exactly soluble models associated with the problem, obtain the exact ground states which exist for certain parameter regimes, and apply a variety of perturbative techniques in the regime of strong ring-exchange coupling. By combining these approaches with considerations related to the discrete ${Z}_{4}$ symmetry of the model, we present the complete phase diagram.

Finitely Correlated Generalized Spin Ladders

Alexei K. Kolezhuk, H.-J. Mikeska

We study two-leg S=1/2 ladders with general isotropic exchange interactions between spins on neighboring rungs, whose ground state can be found exactly in a form of finitely correlated (matrix product) wave function. Two families of models admitting an exact solution are found: one yields translationally invariant ground states and the other describes spontaneously dimerized models with twofold degenerate ground state. Several known models with exact ground states (Majumdar–Ghosh and Shastry–Sutherland spin-1/2 chains, Affleck–Kennedy–Lieb–Tasaki spin-1 chain, Δ-chain, Bose–Gayen ladder model) can be obtained as particular cases from the general solution of the first family, which includes also a set of models with only bilinear interactions. Those two families of models have nonzero intersection, which enables us to determine exactly the phase boundary of the second-order transition into the dimerized phase and to study the properties of this transition. The structure of elementary excitations in the dimerized phase is discussed on the basis of a variational ansatz. For a particular class of models, we present exact wave functions of the elementary excitations becoming gapless at second-order transition lines. We also propose a generalization of the Bose–Gayen model which has a rich phase diagram with all phase boundaries being exact.

Cyclic spin exchange in cuprate spin ladders

Tamara S. Nunner, Philipp Brune, Thilo Kopp +2 more

We investigate the influence of a cyclic spin exchange ${J}_{\mathrm{cyc}}$ on the one- and two-triplet excitations of an undoped two-leg $S=1/2$ ladder, using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG). The dispersion of the $S=0$ two-triplet bound state is dramatically reduced by ${J}_{\mathrm{cyc}}$ due to a repulsion between triplets on neighboring rungs. In $(\mathrm{La},\mathrm{Ca}{)}_{14}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{24}{\mathrm{O}}_{41}$ a consistent description of both the spin gap and the $S$=0 bound state requires ${J}_{\mathrm{cyc}}{/J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}\ensuremath{\approx}0.20--0.27$ and ${J/J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}\ensuremath{\approx}1.25--1.35.$ With these coupling ratios the recently developed dynamical DMRG yields an excellent description of the entire $S=0$ excitation spectrum observed in the optical conductivity, including the continuum contribution.

Diverging Heisenberg spin ladders: ground state and low energy excitations

Debabrata Parihari, Swapan Kumar Pati

We consider a two-leg ladder system with interactions varying from constant rung coupling to systematic diminishing of rung interactions leading to diverging chains. We compare and contrast their ground state and excitation characteristics using density matrix renormalization group methods. We find that the finite spin gap in a constant coupling ladder develops into a gapless excitation with slight diminishing of the distance dependent coupling. Varying the spatial range of the rung coupling, we derive the effective length scale of triplet excitations in these ladder classes of systems.
