Diverging Heisenberg spin ladders: ground state and low energy excitations

Abstract

We consider a two-leg ladder system with interactions varying from constant rung coupling to systematic diminishing of rung interactions leading to diverging chains. We compare and contrast their ground state and excitation characteristics using density matrix renormalization group methods. We find that the finite spin gap in a constant coupling ladder develops into a gapless excitation with slight diminishing of the distance dependent coupling. Varying the spatial range of the rung coupling, we derive the effective length scale of triplet excitations in these ladder classes of systems.

Frustrated spin -1/2 two-leg and three-leg antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladders

Ningsheng Zhu

The goal of this project is to study the ground-state properties of frustrated spin-1/2 two- and three-leg Heisenberg ladders, and to investigate possible effects of diagonal couplings on spin gaps. The ground-state and the first-excited-state energies of these two systems are calculated systematically by using the density matrix renormalization group method. The ground state phase diagrams for these two systems are obtained. For the frustrated two-leg ladder, we found that the spin gap is insensitive to the change of the FM diagonal coupling constant. This is in agreement with experimental suggestions. For the frustrated three-leg ladder, we conclusively proved that introducing AF diagonal couplings can not change the gapless property of the ground state.

Ground state and low-energy excitations of the Kitaev-Heisenberg two-leg ladder

Cliò Efthimia Agrapidis, Jeroen van den Brink, Satoshi Nishimoto

We study the ground state and low-lying excited states of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model on a two-leg ladder geometry using the density-matrix renormalization-group and Lanczos exact diagonalization methods. The Kitaev and Heisenberg interactions are parametrized as $K=sin\ensuremath{\phi}$ and $J=cos\ensuremath{\phi}$ with an angle parameter $\ensuremath{\phi}$. Based on the results for several types of order parameters, excitation gaps, string order parameter, and entanglement spectra, the $\ensuremath{\phi}$-dependent ground state phase diagram is determined. Remarkably, the phase diagram is quite similar to that of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice, exhibiting the same long-range-ordered states, namely rung singlet (analog to N\'eel in three dimensions), zigzag, ferromagnetic, and stripy, and the presence of gapped spin liquids around the exactly solvable Kitaev points $\ensuremath{\phi}=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\ensuremath{\pi}/2$. We also calculate the expectation value of a plaquette operator corresponding to a $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux state in order to establish how the gapped Kitaev spin liquid extends away from the $\ensuremath{\phi}=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\ensuremath{\pi}/2$. Furthermore, we determine the dynamical spin structure factor and discuss the effect of the Kitaev interaction on the spin-triplet dispersion.

Low-energy properties of spin-1/2 two-leg antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladders with ferromagnetic diagonal coupling

Ningsheng Zhu, Xiaoqun Wang, Changfeng Chen

Using the density matrix renormalization group method, we have obtained the ground-state phase diagram of a spin-1/2 two-leg antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladder with a ferromagnetic diagonal interaction ${J}_{\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}}.$ The boundary between the two phases found in the system, the Haldane phase and the singlet phase, lies in the frustrated area of the parameter space, i.e., both the rung coupling ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ and the diagonal coupling ${J}_{\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}}$ are ferromagnetic. The spin gap is found to be insensitive to the change of the ferromagnetic diagonal coupling strength when the ratio of the rung coupling constant ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ to the leg coupling constant ${J}_{\ensuremath{\Vert}}$ is 0.5, in agreement with the analysis of recent experimental spin susceptibility data.

N -leg spin- S Heisenberg ladders: A density-matrix renormalization group study

Flávia B. Ramos, J. C. Xavier

We investigate the $N$-leg spin-$S$ Heisenberg ladders by using the density matrix renormalization group method. We present estimates of the spin gap ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{s}$ and of the ground-state energy per site ${e}_{\ensuremath{\infty}}^{N}$ in the thermodynamic limit for ladders with widths up to six legs and spin $S\ensuremath{\le}\frac{5}{2}$. We also estimate the ground-state energy per site ${e}_{\ensuremath{\infty}}^{2\mathrm{D}}$ for the infinite two-dimensional spin-$S$ Heisenberg model. Our results support that for ladders with semi-integer spins the spin excitation is gapless for $N$ odd and gapped for $N$ even, whereas for integer spin ladders the spin gap is nonzero, independent of the number of legs. Those results agree with the well-known conjectures of Haldane and S\'en\'echal-Sierra for chains and ladders, respectively. We also observe edge states for ladders with $N$ odd, similar to what happens in spin chains.

Ground State Properties of theS= 3/2 Three-Leg Heisenberg Tube

Yohei Fuji, Satoshi Nishimoto, Y. Ohta

Using the density-matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization methods the ground-state properties of the S = 3/2 three-leg Heisenberg tube with leg ( J ||) and rung ( J ⊥) exchange couplings are studied. We find that the spin-excitation gap associated with a spontaneous dimerization opens in the entire region of the coupling strength, as seen in the S = 1/2 three-leg tube. However, in contrast to the case of the S = 1/2 tube, the gap develops very slowly with increasing the rung coupling strength in the weak-coupling regime and its size remains only about 5 % of the leg coupling strength even at J ⊥/ J || = 5. We also calculate the quantized Berry phase and suggest that there exist three types of the valence-bond-solid states depending on the ratio of leg and rung coupling strengths. Moreover, an effective model is derived by the perturbative expansion to check the numerical results in the strong rung-coupling limit.

Spin gap of the three-leg S=32 Heisenberg tube

Satoshi Nishimoto, Yohei Fuji, Y. Ohta

The ground-state properties of the three-leg $S=\frac{3}{2}$ straight Heisenberg tube are studied using the density-matrix renormalization group method. We find that the spin-excitation gap associated with a spontaneous dimerization opens for the whole coupling regime, as seen in the three-leg $S=\frac{1}{2}$ straight Heisenberg tube. However, in contrast to the case of the $S=\frac{1}{2}$ straight tube, the gap increases very slowly with increasing the rung coupling, and its size is only a few $\text{percent}$ or less of the leg exchange interaction in the weak- and intermediate-coupling regimes. We thus argue that, unless the rung coupling is substantially larger than the leg coupling, the gap may be quite hard to be observed experimentally. We also calculate the quantized Berry phase to show that there exist three kinds of valence-bond-solid states depending on the ratio of leg and rung couplings.
